Experimental measurements of flames and the product properties were performed for small kerosene pool fires. which is widely used as a fire source of laboratory scale experiments with scaling modeling. The flame length and flickering frequency were investigated for the flame structures, and compared with the theory. Three measurement methods were introduced to clarify the smoke characteristics, i.e. various gas concentrations, smoke density and thermophoretic sampling with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The yield of carbon dioxide and the consumption of oxygen were proportional to the heat release rate of pool fires, but there is no trend on carbon monoxide emission. Smoke density of turbulent flames was exponentially increased with the heat release rate. The morphology of the soot particle was investigated to address the degree of soot maturing. The results show that the similar smoke morphology between an inverse jet flame and a pool fire exists despite of different combustion controlling mechanisms.

Combustion performance and characteristics of high-pressure subscale liquid rocket combustors were studied experimentally. Four different models of combustor were considered in this paper. The high-pressure subscale combustor is composed of the mixing head, the water cooling cylinder and the nozzle. One model of the combustors employed regenerative cooling combustor in that the kerosene used for the chamber cooling is burned. This combustor was damaged due to a high frequency combustion instability occurred during a firing test. The results of the firing tests, comparison of performance, and characteristics of static and dynamic pressures of the combustors are described.

Heavy hydrocarbon reforming is a core technology for "Dirty energy smart". Heavy hydrocarbons are components of fossil fuels, biomass, coke oven gas and etc. Heavy hydrocarbon reforming converts the fuels into $H_2$-rich syngas. And then $H_2$-rich syngas is used for the production of electricity, synthetic fuels and petrochemicals. Energy can be used efficiently and obtained from various sources by using $H_2$-rich syngas from heavy hydrocarbon reforming. Especially, the key point of "Dirty energy smart" is using "dirty fuel" which is wasted in an inefficient way. New energy conversion laboratory of KAIST has been researched diesel reforming for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) as a part of "Dirty energy smart". Diesel is heavy hydrocarbon fuels which has higher carbon number than natural gas, kerosene and gasoline. Diesel reforming has difficulties due to the evaporation of fuels and coke formation. Nevertheless, diesel reforming technology is directly applied to "Dirty fuel" because diesel has the similar chemical properties with "Dirty fuel". On the other hand, SOFC has advantages on high efficiency and wasted heat recovery. Nippon oil Co. of Japan recently commercializes 700We class SOFC system using city gas. Considering the market situation, the development of diesel reformer has a great ripple effect. SOFC system can be applied to auxiliary power unit and distributed power generation. In addition, "Dirty energy smart" can be realized by applying diesel reforming technology to "Dirty fuel". As well as material developments, multidirectional approaches are required to reform heavy hydrocarbon fuels and use $H_2$-rich gas in SOFC. Gd doped ceria (CGO, $Ce_{1-x}Gd_xO_{2-y}$) has been researched for not only electrolyte materials but also catalysts supports. In addition, catalysts infiltrated electrode over porous $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}O_3-{\delta}$ and catalyst deposition at three phase boundary are being investigated to improve the performance of SOFC. On the other hand, nozzle for diesel atomization and post-reforming for light-hydrocarbons removal are examples of solving material problems in multidirectional approaches. Likewise, multidirectional approaches are necessary to realize "Dirty energy smart" like reforming "Dirty fuel" for SOFC.

Numerical study is carried out to investigate the effects of chemistry and thermal radiation on the rocket plume flow field at various altitudes. Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows were solved by a fully-implicit TVD code based on the finite volume method. An infinitely fast chemistry module for hydrocarbon mixture with detailed thermo-chemical properties and a thermal radiation module for optically thick media were incorporated with the fluid dynamics code. The plume flow fields of a kerosene-fueled rocket flying at Mach number zero at sea-level, 1.16 at altitude of 5.06 km and 2.90 at 17.34 km were numerically analyzed. Results showed the plume structures at different altitude conditions with the effects of chemistry and radiation. It is understood that the excess temperature by the chemical reactions in the exhaust gas may not be ignored in the view point of propulsion performance and thermal protection of the rocket base, especially at higher altitude conditions.
Oil spill caused severe effects on the marine fauna and flora due to direct contact of organisms with the oil and even in regions not directly affected by the spill. This study was conducted to understand the effects of the oil spill accidents and the use of dispersant on the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. Crude oil produced in Kuwait, bunker-C, kerosene and diesel oil, and a chemical dispersant produced in Korea, were added with a series of 10 ppb to 100 ppm in the f/2-Si medium at $20^{\circ}C$ under a photon flux from cool white fluorescent tubes of $100\;mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ in a 14: 10 h L:D cycle for the culture of C. polykrikoides. In low concentrations of ${\leq}$ 1 ppm of examined oils no impact on the growth of C. polykrikoides was recorded, while in high concentration of ${\geq}$ 10 ppm, cell density was significantly decreased with the range of 10 to 80% in comparison with the control. The growth of C. polykrikoides after the addition of the dispersant and the mixtures combined with oils and a dispersant of ${\geq}$ 10 ppm appeared to decrease, whereas the growth of C. polykrikoides exposed to ${\leq}$ 100 ppb showed little serious impact. However, almost all the C. polykrikoides cells were died regardless of a dispersant and combined mixtures within a few days after the addition of high concentrations.

For the remediation of the subsurface contaminated by nonaqueous phase liquids(NAPLs), it is important to characterize the NAPL zone properly. Conventional characterization methods provide data at discrete points. To overcome the weak points of conventional characterization methods, the partitioning tracer method has been developed and studied. The average saturation of NAPL($S_n$), which is the representative and continuous saturation value within contaminated site, can be calculated by comparing the transport of the partitioning tracers to that of the conservative tracer in the partitioning tracer method. In this study, the application of the partitioning tracer method in heterogeneous media was investigated. To represent the heterogeneous condition of subsurface, a two-dimensional soil box was divided into four layers and each layer contained different sized soils. Soils in the soil box were contaminated by the mixture of kerosene and diesel, and partitioning tracer tests were conducted before and after the contamination using methanol as conservative tracer and 4-methyl-2-pentanol, 2-ethyl-1-butanol, and hexanol as partitioning tracers. The response curves of partitioning tracers from contaminated soils were separated and retarded in comparison with those from non-contaminated soils. The contamination of soils by NAPLs, therefore, can be detected by partitioning tracer method considering these retardations of tracers. From our experiment condition, the average saturation of NAPLs calculated by partitioning tracer method using the methanol as conservative tracer and hexanol as partitioning tracer showed the highest accuracy, though all results were underestimated. Further studies, therefore, were needed for improving the accuracy using the partitioning tracer test in heterogeneous media.

The purpose of this study is to conduct the study of the combustion and thermal characteristics through transportation oil for the analysis of fire hazard. Transportation oil breaks down into fuels such as diesel for civilian demands, gasoline, DF1(diesel for military), high sulfur diesel(for marine), kerosene and JP1(for aviation), and lubricants like brake fluid, power steering oil, engine oil, and automatic and manual transmission oil. The experiments of flash point, ignition point, flame duration time, heat release rate were carried out using TAG closed cup flash point tester(AFP761), Cleveland open cup auto flash point analyzer(AFP762), KRS-RG-9000 and Dual cone calorimeter. As a result, the fuel's ignition points were lower than lubricants, especially that of gasoline was not conducted as it has below zero one. Gasoline has the highest ignition point of about $600^{\circ}C$, while the other fuels showed $400{\sim}465^{\circ}C$. For flame duration time, lubricants had over 300 seconds, but fuels had less than 300 seconds except high sulfur diesel(350 seconds). Total heat release rate ranged $287{\sim}462kW/m^2$ for lubricants and gasoline showed the highest total heat release rate, $652kW/m^2$.
The low temperature pyrolysis of ABS resin has been carried out in a batch reactor under the atmospheric pressure. The effect of the reaction temperature on the yield of pyrolytic oils has been determined in the present study. The oil products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gas, gasoline, kerosene, gas oil and heavy oil according to the petroleum product quality standard of Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The conversion reaches 80% after 60 min at $500^{\circ}C$ in the pyrolysis of ABS resin. The amount of the final product was ranked as gas heavy oil > gasoline > gas oil > kerosen based on the yield. The yields of heavy oil and gas oil increase with an increase in the reaction time and temperature.

Hypersonic aircraft technologies have been developed with increase in flight speeds. As hypersonic flight speeds increase, heat loads on an aircraft and it's engine increase. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France, and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical phase of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

For the launch preparation of KSLV-I, gaseous nitrogen with various level of pressure and cryogenic liquid nitrogen are required. Nitrogen Supply System on launch complex has been developed to perform the production of high pressure gaseous nitrogen, the production of gaseous nitrogen with temperature of $273{\pm}2K$ for protection purge of launch vehicle after loading of propellant and the supply of cryogenic liquid nitrogen for cooling of fuel (kerosene) and oxidizer (liquid oxygen). The operational instability of vaporizer mainly caused by its heat transfer characteristics which sensitively depends on the atmospheric conditions was removed by introducing parallel installation of two vaporizer and their switching operation. The developed Nitrogen Supply System carried out its function successfully in preparation of KSLV-I flight tests.
