  • A CFD analysis has been made for fully developed turbulent flows in a triangular bare rod bundle with pitch to diameter ratio (P/D) of 1.123. The nonlinear turbulence models predicted the turbulencedriven secondary flow in the triangular subchannel. The nonlinear quadratic $\kappa-\omega$ models by Speziale and Myong-Kasagi predicted turbulence structure in the rod bundle fairly well. The nonlinear quadratic and cubic $\kappa-\omega$ models by Shih et al. and Craft et al. showed somewhat weaker anisotropic turbulence. The differential Reynolds stress model appeared to overpredict the turbulence anisotropy in the rod bundle.

  • Steady flow simulations through a high pressure turbine guide vanes were carried out. The main objective of the present work is to study the performance of turbulence models on the steady flow prediction from aerodynamic and aerothermal points of view. Three turbulence models were compared, namely SST, k-${\omega}$ and ${\omega}$-Reynolds stress models. The laminar results were also compared. The comparison was done with emphasis on the isentropic Mach number and heat transfer coefficient along the blade, and total pressure loss in the wake region. The calculated isentropic Mach number showed reasonable agreement with experimental data along the blade surface for all three turbulent models. For the total pressure loss in the wake region, ${\omega}$-Reynolds stress model showed the best agreement with the experimental data. However, unless using an appropriate transition model, the heat transfer coefficients of all three turbulent models showed poor agreement with experimental data.

  • The unsteady supersonic flow over two- and three-Dimensional cavities has been analyzed by the integration of unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) with the k - w turbulence model. The unsteady flow is characterized by the periodicity due to the mutual relation between the shear layer and the internal flow in cavities. Numerical method is upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with the Van Leer limiters, and time accuracy is used explicit 4th stage Runge-Kutta scheme. Cavity flows are Comparison of two- and three-dimensional. The cavity has a L/D ratio of 3 for two-dimensional case. and same L/D and W/D ratio is 1 for three-dimensional case. The Mach and Reynolds numbers are held constant at 1.5 and 450000 respectively. For the three-dimensional case, the flow field is observed to oscillate in the 'shear layer mode' with a feedback mechanism that follow Rossiter's formula. On the other hand, the self-sustained oscillating flow transitions to a 'wake mode' for the two-dimensional simulation, with more violent fluctuations inside the cavity.

  • The vortex convection and induced flow field behind the KARI 3m x 4m LSWT gust generator was computed by using Computational Fluid Dynamics. For the accurate simulation of vortex convection, inviscid, laminar, Spalart-Allmars k-e and k-w turbulence models were tested with the NAL gust generator configuration and Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model was selected for the prediction of induced flow field behind the KARI LSWT gust generator. The wind tunnel test was also carried out at KARI LSWT and the results were compared with CFD prediction.

  • CFD simulation has been conducted on a small scaled 4 nozzle clustered engine operating with air. In the present paper, the effects of grid size, turbulence models, flux difference methods have been compared. The results show that the base flows are somewhat different as the turbulence models, while Roe and AUSM flux differences produced almost the same results. Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model produces more accurate results rather than famous SST k-w model. The calculated Mach number and pressure profile in the engine base reveal the complex base flow structure, which is somewhat different from the generally estimated flow fields.

  • A numerical study of underexpanded jet and impingement on a wall mounted at various distances from the nozzle exit is presented. The 3-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations and κ-ω turbulence equations are solved. The grids are constructed as overlapped grid systems to examine the distance effect. The DADI method is applied to obtain steady-state solutions. To avoid numerical instability such as the carbuncle phenomena that sometimes accompany approximate Riemann solver, the HLLE+ scheme is employed for the inviscid flux at the cell interfaces. A goal of this work is to apply a number of two-equation turbulence models based on the w equation to the impinging jet problem.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of various turbulence models on the aerodynamic noise of an air-conditioner (AC) indoor unit. The results from URANS (unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations with the standard k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ shear stress transport (SST) and Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence models were analyzed and compared with the noise data from the experiments. The frequency spectra of the far-field acoustic pressure were computed using the Farrasat equation derived from the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation based on the acoustic analogy model. Two fixed fan casings and the rotating cross-flow fan were used as the source surfaces of the dipole noise in the Farrasat equation. The result with the standard k-$\epsilon$ model showed a much better agreement with the experimental data compared to the k-w SST and S-A models. The differences in the pressure spectra from the different turbulence models were discussed based on the instantaneous vorticity fields. It was found that the over-estimated power spectra with the k-w SST and S-A models are related to the emphasized small-scale vortices produced with these models.

  • In this paper, a modification of PISO algorithm based on standard k-ε turbulence model was proposed. The numerical technique used in this research is finite volume method, hybrid scheme for discretizing convection term, Euler implicit scheme for discretizing time term, and non-staggered grid. The basic idea of the modification of PISO algorithm is to perform an additional corrector stage for turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation rate to correct the inconsistence of flow and turbulence. In order to validate this algorithm, simulation of flow around a square cylinder (Re=3000) was performed in two-dimensional case. The results obtained from the proposed scheme show better agreement with those from the experiment than using original PISO algorithm in coherent velocity field.

  • The wind load on building surface is numerically investigated. The geometry of target building is a square cross section and aspect ratio (height (H) to width (d)) is 6. On building surface, the pressure was measured, compared to obtained value from numerical simulation. The numerical simulations were done using URANS with three different turbulence models such as v2-f model, k-${\omega}$model, and k-${\varepsilon}$ model, respectively. The v2-f model showed the best agreement with experimental data in simulating mean pressure coefficients on front, rear and side surface. But unsteady characteristics of pressure history measured on surface is shown a discrepancy between experiment and numerical simulation.

  • The temporal distribution of the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) and the vertical component of Reynolds stresses ($-{\bar{u^{\prime}w^{\prime}}}$) was measured during one wave period under high wave energy conditions. The wave data were obtained at Hujeong Beach in the east coast of Korea at January 14~18 of 2017 when an extratropical cyclone was developed in the East Sea. Among the whole thousands of waves measured during the period, hundreds of regular waves that had with similar pattern were selected for the analysis in order to give three representing mean wave patterns using the ensemble average technique. The turbulence properties were then estimated based on the selected wave data. It is interesting to find out that $-{\bar{u^{\prime}w^{\prime}}}$ has one clear peak near the time of flow reversal while TKE has two peaks at the corresponding times of maximum cross-shore velocity magnitudes. The distinguished pattern of Reynolds stress indicates that vertical fluxes of such properties as suspended sediments may be enhanced at the time when the horizontal flow direction is reversed to disturb the flows, supporting the turbulence convection process proposed by Nielsen (1992). The characteristic patterns of turbulence properties are examined using the CADMAS-SURF Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model. Although the model can reasonably simulate the distribution of TKE pattern, it fails to produce the $-{\bar{u^{\prime}w^{\prime}}}$ peak at the time of flow reversal, which indicates that the application of RANS model is limited in the prediction of some turbulence properties such as Reynolds stresses.
