  • The feeding habits of Paralichthys olivaceus in the Uljin marine ranching area, located on the mid-eastern coast of Korea, were studied from January to November 2009. In total, 381 specimens were collected; fish ranged in size from 15.4 to 59.0 cm in total length. P. olivaceus is a carnivore, mainly consuming other fishes and crustaceans. The prey items of P. olivaceus changed ontogenetically. Small individuals fed on decapod crustaceans while large ones fed heavily on other fishes. The diet of P. olivaceus varied seasonally. Fish comprised the main prey items throughout the year. The stomach contents index (SCI) of each size class increased and the dietary breadth index (DBI) of each size class decreased as individuals grew.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze elementary teachers' science class objectively and quantitatively using Mobile Eye Tracker. The mobile eye tracker is easy to wear in eyeglasses form. And experiments are collected in video form, so it is very useful for realizing objective data of teacher's class situation in real time. Participants in the study were 2 elementary teachers, and they are teaching sixth grade science in Seoul. Participants took a 40-minute class wearing a mobile eye tracker. Eye movements of participants were collected at 60 Hz, and the collected eye movement data were analyzed using SMI BeGaze 3.7. In this study, the area related to the class was set as the area of interest, we analyzed the visual occupancy of teachers. In addition, we analyzed the linguistic interaction between teacher and students. The results of the study are as follows. First, we analyze the visual occupancy of meaningful areas in teaching-learning activities by class stage. Second, the analysis of eye movements when teachers interacted with students showed that teacher A had a high percentage of students' faces, while teacher B had a high visual occupation in areas not related to classes. Third, the linguistic interaction of the participants were analyzed. Analysis areas include questions, attention-focused language, elementary science teaching terminology, daily interaction, humor, and unnecessary words. This study shows that it is possible to analyze elementary science class objectively and quantitatively through analysis of visual occupancy using mobile eye tracking. In addition, it is expected that teachers' visual attention in teaching activities can be used as an index to analyze the form of language interaction.

  • Background: Pneumonia is the most common cause of death among infectious diseases with community-acquired pneumonia being the sixth leading cause of death in the USA. In Korea, several studies have evaluated the prognosis of community-acquired pneumonia with a limited number of patients and risk factors. This study, evaluated all the possible risk factors (including the pneumonia severity index; PSI) in for the community-acquired pneumonia patients admitted to a referral hospital. Methods: The medical records of patients admitted to the Chung-Aug University Yongsan Hospital between January 2002 and January 2005 for community-acquired pneumonia were reviewed retrospectively. The demographic data, comorbidity, radiographic findings and laboratory results which might influence the prognosis of pneumonia were analyzed. Results: Among 179 patients admitted for community-acquired pneumonia, 29 patients died (mortality 16%). The risk factors for mortality in the comorbidity category were congestive heart failure and a myocardial infarction. The laboratory data, showed that albumin, LDH, total cholesterol, HDL, PT, aPTT, hemoglobin and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were related to the prognosis. For the pneumonia severity index, the mortality rate increased in a step-wise manner from class I through class V. Conclusions: Comorbidities such as congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction as well as the albumin, LDH, total cholesterol, HDL cholestreol, prothrombin time, activated partial thrombotin time, hemoglobin and blood urea nitrogen(BUN) are important risk factors for mortality in patients with community-acquired pneumonia. PSI is a valuable index for evaluating the prognosis of community-acquired pneumonia.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare clinical results of guided tissue regeneration(GTR) using either a nonresorbable ePTFE membrane or a resorbable membrane made from a synthetic copolymer of glycolide and lactide(PLGA) in the treatment of human class Ⅱ furcation defects. The ePTEE membranes were applied to 16 patients with maxillary molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group I, PLGA membranes were applied to 15 patients with maxillary molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group Ⅱ, ePTFE membranes were applied to 20 patients with mandibular molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group Ⅲ and PLGA membranes were applied to 20 patients with mandibular molar buccal class Ⅱ furcation defects as Group Ⅳ and bone graft materials(DFDBA) were applied in all groups. Probing depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, tooth mobility and sulcus bleeding index(SBI) were measured at baseline, 3, 6 and 12months postoperatively. In addition, membrane exposure levels were measured at surgery, 1, 2 and 6weeks postoperatively and postoperative complications were evaluated. The results were as follows: In all groups, there were statistically significant differences in probing depth reduction, gain of clinical attachment and mobility reduction at values of 3, 6 and 12months postoperatively compared to values of baseline, whereas no significant differences in SBI except Group I and gingival recession(p<0.05). Membrane exposure levels were increased at 1, 2 and 6weeks postopratively compared to value of baseline in Group I(p<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between ePTFE and PLGA membrane in probing depth, clinical attachment level and SBI. There were minimal gingival recession and membrane exposure in Group Ⅳ and pain and swelling were the most common postoperative complications in Group Ⅱ, Ⅲ(p<0.05). In conclusion, this study showed that both nonresorbable membrane and resorbable membrane were effective similarly in the treatment of class Ⅱ furcation defects, without statistical differences in clinical measurements.

  • This study presents the method to quantify the stand structure diversity or homogeneity. Gadow's dbh differentiation(Durchmesserdifferenzierung) is introduced which quantifies the horizontal stand structure by the ratio of the dbh between subject tree and neighbour trees. And new stand structure diversity index based on Lorenz curve, which is made by ratio of tree number and basal area or volume by dbh class, is presented. The horizontal stand structure index based on Lorenz curve has a value from 0 to 1 as Gadow's index, and approximates to 1 if the stand structure has high diversity. In the comparative analysis for performance, the new stand structure index based on Lorenz curve is considered to compare with the Gadow's index for describing the stand structure.
