  • Background: Diabetic polyneuropathy is the most common complication in diabetics, occurring in 50% of all cases. About 10-20% of all diabetics are accompanied by neurological pain, showing a tendency to increase with age. Clinical aspects are very diverse, from mild abnormalities on nerve conduction tests to severe abnormalities in all sensory, motor, and autonomic nerves; however, sensory symptoms usually precede motor symptoms. Patients typically express sensory symptoms, such as positive and negative symptoms, which decrease the quality of life and have marked clinical implications, such as increased morbidity and mortality. Although Western medical drugs, such as tricyclic antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and narcotic analgesics, are used for diabetic polyneuropathy, a standard treatment has not been established. Case report: A 65-year-old male with paresthesia and pain due to diabetic polyneuropathy was treated with Uchashinki-hwan, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion, and Jungsongouhyul pharmacopuncture for 10 days. We used the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Scoring System, EuroQol-5 Dimension, and Visual Analog Scale to evaluate symptoms. Subsequently, the Neuropathy Scoring System, EuroQol-5 Dimension, and subjective discomfort improved. Conclusion: The present case report suggests that combined Korean medicine treatment might be an effective treatment for paresthesia and pain with diabetic polyneuropathy. Several follow-up studies should be conducted to clarify the effectiveness of the treatment.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on chronic pelvic pain with gynecological diseases. Methods: Three female patients with gynecological diseases who suffered from chronic pelvic pain got Korean medicine treatment such as Boheo-tang-gagambang, acupuncture, Jungsongouhyul pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, fumigation therapy with Hyeonhosaek-tang and Sasangja-tang and physiotherapy during hospitalization. Numerical Rating Scale(NRS) of pains and percentage of other symptoms were measured every morning. Results: In three cases, after 9, 15, and 22 days of treatment in each case, pelvic pain decreased by more than 50% and other symptoms were also improved. Conclusions: These cases showed that Korean medicine treatment of chronic pelvic pain with gynecological diseases was effective for alleviating symptoms.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of GB12 (Wangu) acupoint for dizziness. This study retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of 12 hospitalized patients complaining of dizziness were treated 5 times a week with a combined Korean medicine treatment including Jungsongouhyul pharmacopuncture on bilateral GB12 (Wangu) acupoint, and dizziness was evaluated by using a numerical rating scale (NRS). As a result of medical record analysis, NRS of 12 patients was significantly decreased after treatment (p<0.001), and no adverse events were reported in all 12 cases. We suggest that the treatment of GB12 (Wangu) could be effective in patients with dizziness, and to obtain exact evidence of effectiveness, further studies are needed.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the patient with radial nerve injury associated with humerus shaft fracture, who was improved by Korean medical treatments. Methods : The patient was treated by Jungsongouhyul pharmacopuncture, electrical stimulation therapy, physical therapy, and herbal medicine according to "Locating Yang brightness meridians" theory. Coding result, Numeric rating scale(NRS) and digital grip dynamometer were used to evaluate the wrist drop, numbness of fingers and grip power. Results : The patient showed the first sign of recovery after 6 weeks from onset. After 9 weeks from onset, the patient could perform delicate manual activity. Grip power showed noticeable improvement as well as coding result and NRS. Conclusions : The results suggest that providing Korean medical treatments according to "Locating Yang brightness meridians" theory is a good method for treating radial nerve injury associated with humerus shaft fracture. But further studies are required to concretely prove the effectiveness of this method for treating radial nerve injury associated with humerus fracture.

  • Objectives : The Purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical application of Ligamentous Articular Strain technique to three patients with chronic ankle pain. Methods : To alleviate patients' pain, practitioner used acupuncture, Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture and Ligamentous Articular Strain technique(mainly Ligamentous Articular Strain technique). The state of patients was measured by VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) score. Results : After treatments, patients' condition was improved. VAS score was decreased. Conclusions : These results suggest that Ligamentous Articular Strain technique is effective to improve chronic ankle pain.

  • ■Objective The aim of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment on patients complaining of sensory disorder of Lateral medullary syndrome caused by lateral medullary infarction. ■Method The patient received Sogyeonghwalhyeoltang, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, TENS and Jungsongouhyul pharmacopuncture treatment for 18 days. Abnormal sensation was evaluated using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), and sensory ataxia was evaluated using quantitative sensory evaluation for light touch, pain, and temperature, and then the sensation was evaluated using % compared with sensation felt when normal was 100%. Symptoms were evaluated over a total of 3 weeks on 2/7, 2/14, and 2/21. ■Results After treatment, NRS scores decreased both when the abnormal sensation was stable and when stimulated. The recovery score for sensory ataxia increased, with more pronounced recovery in the trunk area and slower recovery in the peripheral area. ■Conclusion This case shows that combined Oriental medicine treatment helps recover from sensory disorder in Lateral medullary syndrome.
