In order to realize a practical VOD system, it is necessary for a high-capacity and cost-effective hierarchical VOD server based on tertiary storages such as DVD jukebox. In such a system, it is possible to transfer multiple streams to users by alternatively swapping DVDs using the fixed number of drives. But it takes a long time for loading DVD to a drive. In this paper, we propose a primitive pipelined loading mechanism for hiding the loading time to swap DVDs in a hierarchical VOD server based on DVD jukebox. We also propose a enhanced pipelined loading mechanism for increasing the maximum admittable streams with the fixed number of drives. The enhanced mechanism caches the initial segment of each stream on a disk storage allowing faster data transfer. The performance analysis shows that the proposed mechanisms can admit the maximum allowed stream capacity under the fixed number of disk drives.

As our society turns into the information age we ate witnessing increased productivity by employing electronic document management replacing the traditional paper-based document management and by various application programs using the intranet technology This paper describes design and implementation of an electronic document management system in intranet environment. The user and general administration systems made use of Internet Explorer 4.0 and the related technology therefore it solved the problems of client systems, which were largely dependent on hardware platform. The server and the scan station systems, which require proprietary device driver, were implemented client/server system based on TCP/IP. The jukebox system managing storage of vast amount of data was built by API supporting standard SCSI-ll. The GUI of the jukebox module was employed Motif to enhance the compatibility and ease of use.

This paper aims to derive the specificity of film music of Baz Luhrmann, a Hollywood film director, focusing on his representative works such as Dancing Heroes, Romeo and Juliet, and Moulin Rouge. Frist, Dancing Heroes captures various dance music genres through dynamic shooting techniques and shows trendy sensibility by using the main theme song 'Time after Time,' sung by the main character, Tina. Second, Romeo and Juliet, the original work of Shakespeare, keeps thier lines and stories while decorating gorgeous fashion and rock music in jukebox style. Also, it is harmonized with the most modern and trendy MTV-style video. Third, Moulin Rouge presents film music through the 'mix and match' method, which consists of jukebox-type trendy songs containing classical back stage musical and Bollywood musical images. In conclusion, the style of Baz Luhrmann has been reborn as a unique way of directing Buz Luhrmann's film music that it is expressed by connecting various juke box style music with amazing visual effect. Through director's style, it is possible to suggest the direction of various film music to the industries.

Test data for a naval vessel is massive, expensive and impossible to be retested in a underwater acoustic measurement on the same condition. So, it is very important. In this paper, I mention massive underwater acoustic multimedia database system that was developed to store a long time, manage systematically, supply raw data and analyze data to user in 2-tier structure. Also, I propose 3-tier structure to extend the current database system that can supply multimedia data.

본 논문에서는 대용량 데이터의 계층적 자료저장을 위한 광주크박스 관리 시스템을 설계하고 구현한다. 광주크박스를 이용한 계층적 자료저장을 함으로써 적은 비용으로 대용량의 저장공간을 확보하며, 적절한 스케쥴링 정책에 의해 효과적인 자료 관리를 할 수 있다. 관리 시스템은 사용자와의 인터페이스를 위한 부분. 미디어의 관리를 위한 부분, 주크박스를 제어하기 위한 부분으로 구성된다. 각 구현 모듈들은 운영체제 독립적으로 설계되어 재사용이 가능하며 다양한 운영체제에 적용할 수 있다.

This paper discusses the design and implementation of a video server which uses tertiary device, such as magneto-optical jukebox or tape library, as a source of media archiving. In order to handle the tertiary device in the framework of disk-based stream service model, a sophisticated streaming model is required for server and it should consider the device-specific performance characteristics of tertiary storage. We have carefully designed the streaming mechanism for server whose key functionalities include stream scheduling, disk caching and admission control. The proposed system has been implemented on Windows 2000 platform which is equipped with a magneto-optical jukebox. The design principles of the server are validated with the experiments and the performance characteristics is analyzed.

Multimedia data service applications have to store and manipulate LOBs(unstructured large objects) composing multimedia data. As such, the tertiary storage devices such as an optical disk jukebox and a tape library that consist of a number of platters (the disks in case of an optical disk jukebox and the cartridge tapes in case of a tape library) have been considered essential for the storage system of a DBMS in order to efficiently support storage and management of vary large volume of data. Since the latency with tertiary storage is too long, the schemes for efficient retrieval of LOBs out of tertiary storage need to be investigated. In this paper, we investigated the tertiary I/O Considering the performance characteristics of the LOBs, we proposed various I/O scheduling heuristic algorithms that reduce latency in query processing with LOB retrieval from tertiary storage, and evaluated their performance through a detailed simulation.

Data acquired about 53 gigabyte per a naval vessel is massive, expensive and impossible to be retested in a underwater acoustic measurement. So, it is required to manage systematically. In this paper, we mention MUADS (Massive Underwater Acoustic Database System) that was developed to store a long time, manage systematically and supply raw data and analyzed data. we analyze client/server performance based on 6003 input data individually in our MUADS that Unix server having a massive DC-jukebox and Windows clients.

MIDAS-II is the storage system for BADA DBMS developed at ETRI. This paper describes the extension of MIDAS-II for incorporating the tertiary storage device such as an optical disk jukebox or a tape library, enabling MIDAS-II to function as a storage system of the data server that stores a massive amount of multimedia data. The MIDAS-II disk volume structure is extended to efficiently function as a volume for the tertiary storage device with multiple platters, which canstore huge amount of data of the order of tera bytes. The storage structure of the LOB is changed to efficiently manage the LOB data in the tertiary storage device. The data structures of the shared memory, the process structure, and the utilities in MIDAS-II are also extended to efficiently incorporating the tertiary storage device. The functionalities of each MIDAS-II API function are expanded to handle the tertiary storage device, while the prototypes of those functions are intact in order not to affect the existing application programs. The performance evaluation shows that the extended MIDAS-II works effectively with the tertiary storage device. All these extensions and the performance evaluation are conducted in the SunOS 5.4 environment.

Bourdieu is one of the few social science researchers who were interested in photography. Bourdieu's work on photography appears principally in two books: Un art moyen: Essai sur les usagrs sociaux de la photographie(1965) and La distinction(1979). In these books, Bourdieu analyzes the role of photography in the family life of peasants and small town and urban dwellers. He shows how different classes and groups express their esthetic worldview in response to different photographs and photographic styles. What Bourdieu analyzed is not just photography but ways of photographing and ways of looking at pictures. Through these analyses, Bourdieu explores the social definition of photography. Bourdieu's ideas on photographic practice in social life are as follows. First, the photography, especially family photography generally practiced, has the integrative function. It recreates the group by ritualizing and solemnizing the important moments of social life in which the group reaffirms its unity. Second, the photography as esthetic practice in search of legitimacy as a fine art becomes a means by which different classes are pitted against each other. Each of classes gives its own meaning to photographic practice. Despite its originality and persuasive power, Bourdieu's work on photography has its own limits. The data used by Bourdieu are 35 years old and relevant to European social life. Things has changed since. First, the technological improvement and innovation in photography was considerable. Cheap and good photographic materials, easy to operate, made photographic practice everybody's everyday activity. New media like camcorder and digital camera made photography one of the industrial discards like jukebox. It means that photography does not function as important means of distinction between classes any longer. The integrative function of the photography becomes more ambiguous too. Second, the esthetic status of the photography has changed. The family photography was already integraed into fine art. Photography is not a middle-brow art any more. Bourdieu's work on photography shows how photography was used by different social classes in European social life of the 1960's. His work is historically and geographically limited. Moreover, his work was ordered by the french affiliate of Eastman Kodak Company. And all along the analysis, Bourdieu didn't hide his intention of distinguishing his sociological method from the other methods, especially psychological one. These mean that Bourdieu's work was done in a specific context, for specific purposes. In this respect, Bourdieu's work on photography, like every sociological work, can not claim to be universal.
