The fundamental joint configuration that is often applied in offshore structures is the K-joint. The paper describes a numerical parametric study for K-joint parameters (using the finite element program) and compared with results of the experimental test. The stress effects of various parameters including $\alpha,\;\beta,\;\gamma,\;\tau\;and\;\theta$ were investigated. The paper introduces the stress distributions as per each parameter. From the study, the maximum stress of joint became different according to the variation of joint parameters.
The purposes of this study are to investigate perceived discomfort for static joint motions, and to propose rankings for the joint motions based on the perceived discomfort. The perceived discomfort was measured through an experiment using the free modulus method of the magnitude estimation, in which ten healthy college-age female students participated. The results showed that joints, joint motions and their levels significantly affected the perceived discomfort at $\alpha$=0.01, and that the interaction of joints and joint motion levels was also significant. Based on the experimental results, three rankings were proposed by joint and joint motions, by joints and by joint motions, which were very different from the existing ones. Especially, the proposed rankings were different from the males' published before in their order and magnitude. These rankings can be used as a valuable tool for better understanding potentially adverse effects of poor working postures in industrial sites, and as basic data for developing the postural classification scheme.
Background: The purpose of our study was to elucidate the joint effects of combined smoking and alcohol intake on esophageal cancer mortality in Japanese men through a large cohort study with a 20-year follow-up period. Materials and Methods: The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for Evaluation of Cancer Risk (JACC Study) was established in the late 1980s, including 46,395 men and 64,190 women aged 40 years and older and younger than 80. Follow-up of these participants was conducted until 2009. We used the Cox proportional hazards model to analyze data for 42,408 people excluding female participants, 411 people with histories of malignant neoplasms, and 3,576 with unclear smoking and drinking data. Results: The joint effects of age at start of smoking and amount of alcohol consumed per day were compared with non-smokers and non-drinkers or those consuming less than one unit of alcohol per day. The mortality risk was 9.33 (95% confidence interval, 2.55-34.2) for those who started smoking between ages 10 and 19 years and drinking at least three units of alcohol per day. Regarding the joint effects of cumulative amount of smoking and alcohol intake, the risk was high when both smoking and alcohol intake were above a certain level. Conclusions: In this Japanese cohort study, increased cancer mortality risks were observed, especially for people who both started smoking early and drank alcohol. Quitting smoking or not starting to smoke at any age and reducing alcohol consumption are important for preventing esophageal cancer in Japan.
The beneficial effects of hypoxic preconditioning are abolished in the diabetes. The present study was designed to investigate the protective effects and mechanisms of repeated episodes of whole body hypoxic preconditioning (WBHP) in db/db mice. The protective effects of preconditioning were explored on diabetes-induced vascular dysfunction, cognitive impairment and ischemia-reperfusion (IR)-induced increase in myocardial injury. Sixteen-week old db/db (diabetic) and C57BL/6 (non-diabetic) mice were employed. There was a significant impairment in cognitive function (Morris Water Maze test), endothelial function (acetylcholine-induced relaxation in aortic rings) and a significant increase in IR-induced heart injury (Langendorff apparatus) in db/db mice. WBHP stimulus was given by exposing mice to four alternate cycles of low (8%) and normal air O2 for 10 min each. A single episode of WBHP failed to produce protection; however, two and three episodes of WBHP significantly produced beneficial effects on the heart, brain and blood vessels. There was a significant increase in the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nitric oxide (NO) in response to 3 episodes of WBHP. Moreover, pretreatment with the BDNF receptor, TrkB antagonist (ANA-12) and NO synthase inhibitor (L-NAME) attenuated the protective effects imparted by three episodes of WBHP. These pharmacological agents abolished WBHP-induced restoration of p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β ratio and Nrf2 levels in IR-subjected hearts. It is concluded that repeated episodes of WHBP attenuate cognitive impairment, vascular dysfunction and enhancement in IR-induced myocardial injury in diabetic mice be due to increase in NO and BDNF levels that may eventually activate GSK-3β and Nrf2 signaling pathway to confer protection.

Object: to evaluate the effects of two different treatments-joint mobilization and therapeutic exercise on difference for length of lower limbs. Method: The subjects were participated twenty six who has difference for length of lower limbs more 10mm. All subjects randomly assigned to Joint mobilization group(n=13) and therapeutic exercise group. Joint mobilization group received joint mobilization for 2 minutes, Therapeutic exercise group received for 15 minutes per day and 3 times a week during 4 week period. Tape measure method was used to measure the difference for length of lower limbs. Biodex was used to measure the muscle power of lower limbs(Knee flexion, extension). Finger to floor test was used to measure the mobility of spinal column. All measurement of each subjects were measured at pre-experiment, after 2weeks and post-experiment. Result: The result of this study were summarized as follows : 1. Both treatment decreased difference for length of lower limbs while joint mobilization more decreased difference for length of lower limbs than therapeutic exercise. 2. Both treatment increased mobility of spinal column while joint mobilization more increased mobility of spinal column than therapeutic exercise. 3. Joint mobilization increased muscle power while therapeutic exercise decreased muscle power. Conclusion: in a group-wise comparison joint mobilization is more effective than therapeutic exercise.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of joint mobilization on the rang of motion and pain of patient with chronic low back pain. Methods : The subjects were consisted of thirty patients with chronic low back pain(19 females, 11 males ; mean aged 59.93) from 50 to 71. All subjects randomly assigned to the modalities treatment group, joint mobilization group. Modalities treatment group received hot pack used thermal therapy for 20minutes and ICT used electrical therapy for 15minutes, joint mobilization group received modalities treatment with sustained natural apophyseal glides(SNAGS) techniques of Mulligan for 10minutes per day and three times a week during 2 weeks period. Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) was used to measure subjective pain level. Remodified Schober test(RST) was used to measure range of motion of lumbar spine. All measurements of each patients were measured at pre-treatment and 2 weeks post-treatment. Results : The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. VAS was joint mobilization group showed significantly decreased more than modalities treatment group (p<.05). 2. The lumbar flexion range of motion was joint mobilization group showed significantly decreased more than modalities treatment group(p<.05). 3. The lumbar extension range of motion was joint mobilization group showed significantly decreased more than modalities treatment group(p<.05). 4. The lumbar left lateral flexion range of motion was joint mobilization group showed significantly decreased more than modalities treatment group(p<.05). 5. The lumbar right lateral flexion range of motion was joint mobilization group showed significantly decreased more than modalities treatment group(p<.05). Conclusion : These data suggests that SNAGS of Mulligan is beneficial treatment for chronic low back pain.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of various interventions for improving the hip joint range of motion on elite badminton players, including body balance ability, jumping power, smash speed, and joint range of motion. METHODS: The study was conducted on elite badminton players belonging to the S badminton team in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, and the M badminton team in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do. Twenty-one elite badminton players were selected; they were assigned randomly to Experimental Group 1 (n = 11) and Experimental Group 2 (n = 10). Before and after the intervention, the hip joint range of motion, modified star excursion balance test, Sargent jump, and smash speed were measured. In Experimental Group 1, hip joint manual mobilization was applied by a physical therapist, and hip self-exercise performed by the athletes was applied in Experimental Group 2. This intervention was applied once a day, three times a week, for four weeks. RESULTS: A significant increase in the hip joint range of motion (flexion and extension) and modified star excursion balance test (posteromedial direction) was observed in Experimental Group 1 (hip joint mobilization applied group) compared to Experimental Group 2 (hip joint self-exercise applied group) (p < .05). CONCLUSION: When elite level badminton players require improvement in hip flexion and extension range of motion and posteromedial body balance, hip joint mobilization is more effective than hip self-exercise application.

Skin and joint diseases are relatively common in dogs. Nutritional complementation is one of the various management strategies for these disorders. This study evaluated the safety and clinical efficacy of Kyungokgo-gamibang in dogs with skin and joint diseases. Thirty dogs with diseases were included and divided into three groups: control group (n = 15), skin group (n = 10), and joint group (n = 5). The skin and joint groups were fed skin and joint gums composed of Kyungokgo-gamibang extract with standard treatment for four weeks. The control group included dogs with skin diseases who were administered standard skin infection treatment for 4 weeks. The physical and laboratory results showed no remarkable adverse effects of Kyungokgo-gamibang extract after its administration in dogs. Clinical efficacy was evaluated using quality of life scale, and levels of cytokines, including interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and tumor necrosis factor-α, for 4 weeks in all groups. Dermatologic clinical scales were performed for 4 weeks in the control and skin groups. Both the control and skin groups had significantly decreased dermatologic clinical scales, including pruritus and erythema scales (p < 0.05). Among the cytokine levels, only IL-2 concentration was significantly decreased in the skin group after 4 weeks of administration of the Kyungokgo-gamibang extract (p = 0.032). There was no significant difference between the levels of cytokines on days 0 and 28 in the joint group. The quality of life scale was significantly increased after week 4 compared to week 0 in the skin (p = 0.008) and joint groups (p = 0.041). This study suggests that Kyungokgo-gamibang extract can be applied in managing dogs affected by skin and joint diseases without adverse effects.

Background: Ankle sprains are a common clinical ankle disorder and alternations in tibiofibular joint biomechanics along with the talus are thought to contribute to its occurrence. During ankle joint dorsi flexion, proper movement requires the talus to glide posteriorly. Due to the wider front of the talus head, achieving the end range of dorsi flexion necessitates both superior and posterior glide of the distal fibula and anterior glide of the proximal fibula. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of tibiofibular joint mobilization on pain, range of motion, and balance in patients with lateral ankle sprains. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to a control group (n=33) or an experimental group (n=31). Both groups underwent ankle joint mobilization three times a week for two weeks. Additionally, the experimental group received proximal and distal tibiofibular joint mobilization three times a week for two weeks. Measurements were obtained pre-intervention and post-intervention (after 2 weeks). Results: Evaluation parameters included the visual analog scale score (VAS), range of motion (ROM), and one-leg standing test (OLS). Post-intervention, both groups demonstrated significantly improved results for all assessments (p<.01). A significant intergroup difference was observed only in the ROM (p<.01) and OLS (p<.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that tibiofibular joint mobilization, combined with ankle joint mobilization, may be beneficial in enhancing outcomes for individuals with lateral ankle sprains.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of knee joint muscle fatigue and overweight on shock absorption during single-leg landing of adult women. Written informed consent forms, which were approved by the human subject research and review committee at Dong-A University, were provided to all subjects. The subjects who participated in this study were divided into 2 groups: a normal weight group and an overweight group, consisting of 15 young women each. Both the normal weight group and the overweight group showed that use soft landing and ankle dominant strategy. The peak vertical ground reaction force, the knee joint absorption power, and eccentric work done, as the increase of knee joint muscle fatigue level, showed a decrease. And the hip joint absorption power and eccentric work done, as the increase of weight, was less than the overweight group showed the normal weight group. In conclusion, the accumulation of the knee joint muscle fatigue and the increase of body weight may lead to an increased risk of injury during landing.
