This work is concerned with an evaluation of dynamic boric acid corrosion (BAC) of low alloy steel for reactor pressure vessel of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Mockup test method was newly established to investigate dynamic BAC of the low alloy steel under various conditions simulating a primary water leakage incident. The average corrosion rate was measured from the weight loss of the low alloy steel specimen, and the maximum corrosion rate was obtained by the surface profilometry after the mockup test. The corrosion rates increased with the rise of the leakage rate of the primary water containing boric acid, and the presence of oxygen dissolved in the primary water also accelerated the corrosion. From the specimen surface analysis, it was found that typical flow-accelerated corrosion and jet-impingement occurred under two-phase fluid of water droplet and steam environment. The maximum corrosion rate was determined as 5.97 mm/year at the leakage rate of 20 cc/min of the primary water with a saturated content of oxygen within the range of experimental condition of this work.
Unsteady state free natural gas jets injected from several types of injectors were numerically simulated. Simulations showed good agreements with the schlieren experimental results. Moreover, injections of natural gas in intake manifolds of a single-valve engine and a double-valve engine were predicted as well. Predictions revealed that large volumetric injections of natural gas in intake manifolds led to strong impingement of natural gas with the intake valves, which as a result, gave rise to pronounced backward reflection of natural gas towards the inlets of intake manifolds, together with significant increase in pressure in intake manifold. Based on our simulations, we speculated that for engines with short intake manifolds, reflections of the mixture of natural gas and air were likely to approach the inlets of intake manifolds and subsequently be inbreathed into other cylinders, resulting in non-uniform mixture distributions between the cylinders. For engines with long intake manifolds, inasmuch as the degrees of intake interferences between the cylinders were not identical in light of the ignition sequences, non-uniform intake charge distributions between the cylinders would occur.

In this study, the mixing process of two distinct flow is numerically investigated. Two flow with different physical properties (resin and hardener) are mixed through the opposing mixing jets. At a high pressure mixing process, the high speed flow is provided by two in-line nozzles. In the case of numerical modeling, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations (RANS) is conducted to model the flow pattern inside the chamber. Additionally, SST k-omega turbulence model is selected to predict the kinetic energy of flow in impingement zone. The results show that mixing of two distinct flows would be efficient if the velocity of jet is high enough and nozzle diameter is a predominant parameter. Also, this velocity would create higher shear stress between two distinct flows which increases the mixing quality as well as strength of formed vortices. Eventually, the histogram of concentration fraction of resin is examined in order to show the quality of mixing and the range of concentration fractions in the output of chamber.

The present work investigates the local heat transfer characteristics and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with inclined solid and perforated baffles to obtain the basic design data for gas turbine. Five different geometries of baffles such as 1) solid (without hole), 2) three holes, 3) six holes, 4) nine holes, 5) twelve holes were covered. A combination of two baffles of same overall size is used. The flow Reynolds number is ranged from 28,900 to 70,100. The placement of baffles augments the overall heat transfer greatly by combining both jet impingement and the boundary layer separation. The present results show that the average Nusselt number distribution is strongly dependent on number of holes in the baffle plates, i.e., the average Nusselt number increases with increasing number of holes. The friction factor decreases also with increasing the number of holes. however. its value increases with increasing the Reynolds number.

A modification of the TEACH-like computer program based on the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence transport was applied for predicting air mixing patterns and temperature distributions in a rectangular, slot-ventilated enclosure having obstructions ; a rectangular obstacle with heat flux, solid walls separates the passage and the pig pens, and purlins beneath the ceiling. Air flow patterns were calculated for the cases with and without the purlin, extending 300mm beneath the ceiling. Comparisons of prediction data of Randall & Battams(1976) showed air flow pattern predicted well for the case without the purlin. Heat was accumulated at the corner of the left side of the solid wall and the right-upper region of the simulated pigs. However the air distribution pattern was completely different from data for the case with the purlin. The deviation from the observation may be attributed to the difference of the geometric configuation. Exploring the cause of the deviation should be conducted in a further study. Temperature stratification was also observed due to incomplete mixing. The obstruction in the route of the inlet air jet at inlet should be avoided since most of kinetic energy dissipates at the abstacle duet to impingement.

VESTA (Verification of Ex-vessel corium STAbilization) and VESTA-S (-small) test facilities were constructed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute in 2010 to perform various corium melt experiments. Since then, several tests have been performed for the verification of an ex-vessel core catcher design for the EU-APR1400. Ablation tests of an impinging $ZrO_2$ melt jet on a sacrificial material were performed to investigate the ablation characteristics. $ZrO_2$ melt in an amount of 65-70 kg was discharged onto a sacrificial material through a well-designed nozzle, after which the ablation depths were measured. Interaction tests between the metallic melt and sacrificial material were performed to investigate the interaction kinetics of the sacrificial material. Two types of melt were used: one is a metallic corium melt with Fe 46%, U 31%, Zr 16%, and Cr 7% (maximum possible content of U and Zr for C-40), and the other is a stainless steel (SUS304) melt. Metallic melt in an amount of 1.5-2.0 kg was delivered onto the sacrificial material, and the ablation depths were measured. Penetration tube failure tests were performed for an APR1400 equipped with 61 in-core instrumentation penetration nozzles and extended tubes at the reactor lower vessel. $ZrO_2$ melt was generated in a melting crucible and delivered down into an interaction crucible where the test specimen is installed. To evaluate the tube ejection mechanism, temperature distributions of the reactor bottom head and in-core instrumentation penetration were measured by a series of thermocouples embedded along the specimen. In addition, lower vessel failure tests for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are being performed. As a first step, the configuration of the molten core in the plant was investigated by a melting and solidification experiment. Approximately 5 kg of a mixture, whose composition in terms of weight is $UO_2$ 60%, Zr 10%, $ZrO_2$ 15%, SUS304 14%, and $B_4C$ 1%, was melted in a cold crucible using an induction heating technique.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer without additional external power in the case of rectangular impingement air jet vertically on the flat heating surface. The technique used in the present study was placement of square rod bundles as a turbulence promoter in front of the heat transfer surface. The results obtained through this study were summerized as follws. High heat transfer enhancement was achieved by inserting rods in front of the heating flat plate. According to visulaization, it was examined because of flow acceleration and separation and disturbance of boundary layer. The smaller clerance between rod and heating plate was, the larger heat transfer effect became at each H/B. Arverage Nusselt number reached maximum at H/B=10 and the local augmentation rate of heat transfer became maximum at H/B=2. The maximum average heat transfer enhancement rate increase about 43% for the case of X/B=2 and C=1mm, compared to a flat plate without rods. The correlating equation of average Nusselt number and Reynolds number was obatined. As follws : ${\overline{Nu}}_0=1.249Re^{0.465}(C/A)^{-0.033}(H/B)^{0.013}$.
The dispersion of gas discharged from the vent pipes of pressure relief valves attached LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) storage tank was studied. In general, vent pipes should be positioned so that they discharge vertically upwards in a safe place, and installed so that, in the event of ignition of discharged gas, flame impingement on any vessel, equipment or piping is avoided[1][2]. In Korea, on the other hand, there are various type of the end of vent pipes because there is no rule for discharge directions from the vent pipes. In this paper, we took 4 types of vent directions from the pipes in to account, such as vertically upward, vertically downward, vertically 4-way and horizontally 2-way direction. A software package, FLACS, was adopted to simulate gas dispersion from the vent pipes. We found that vertically downward, vertically 4-way and horizontally 2-way discharge from vent pipes were undesirable to avoid ignition on near ground. Therefore, it was obvious that vertically upward opening of a vent pipe is the best option to discharge in a safe place.

To prevent the ozonosphere from being destroyed by Halon, it is an urgent task to find out Halon replacement. As one of the replacements water mist have showed broad applications by its advantages: little pollution to environment (not destroying the ozone layer or bring green house effect), extinguishing fire quickly, consuming a small quantity of water and having little damage to the protected objects. The methods of generating water mist strongly influence fire suppression effectiveness, which determine the cone angle, drop size distribution, flux uniformity, and momentum of the generating spray. The traditional water mist nozzle included pressure jet nozzles, impingement nozzles and twin-fluid nozzles. All of them have more or less disadvantages for fire suppression. Therefore, many research institutes and corporations are taking up with innovations in mist generation. This article provided some recent studies in State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) of University of Science and Technology of China. SKLFS have investigated new methods of generating water mist (i.e. effervescent atomization and ultrasonic atomization). and self developed a series of nozzles and developed advanced DPIVS (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry and Sizing) technique. Characteristics of water mist (the distribution of droplet sizes, flux density, spray dynamics and cone angle) produced by these nozzles were measured under different conditions (work pressure, nozzle geometry, etc.) using LDV/APV and DPTVS systems. A series of experiments were performed to study the fire suppression effectiveness in different fire scenario (different kindsof the fuel, fire size and ventilation conditions). The fire extinguishing mechanisms of water mist was also discussed.

An experimental investigation is conducted to improve a slot film cooling system which can be used for the cooling of gas turbine combustor liner. The tangential slots are constructed of discrete holes with different injection types which are the parallel, vertical, and combined to the slot lip. The investigation is focused on the coolant supply systems of normal-, parallel-, and counter-flow paths to the mainstream direction. A naphthalene sublimation technique has been employed to measure the local heat/mass transfer coefficients in a slot with various injection types and coolant feeding directions. The velocity distributions at the exit of slot lip for the parallel and vertical injection types are fairly uniform with mild periodical patterns with respect to the hole positions. However, the combined injection type increases the nonuniformity of flow distribution with the period equaling twice that of hole-to-hole pitch due to splitting and merging of the ejected flows. The secondary flow at the lip exit has uniform velocity distributions for the parallel and vertical injection types, which are similar to the results of a two-dimensional slot injection. In the results of local heat/mass transfer coefficient, the best cooling performance inside the slot is obtained with the vertical injection type among the three different injection types due to the effect of jet impingement. The lateral distributions of Sh with the parallel- and counter-flow paths are more uniform than the normal flow path. The averaged Sh with the injection holes are $2{\sim}5$ times higher than that of a smooth two-dimensional slot path.
