  • In other to find out the basic information on cultivation and breeding for salt tolerance in rice, these studies were conducted at salinity paddy fields containing 0.2, 0.3, 0.4% of salt and normal paddy field using 6 Japonica type, 5 Tonsil type varieties and Annapurna. On these fields a series of investigation was made for the responses of rice growth and yield to salt content of saline sails. The heading dates of the rice cultivated at salinity 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4% were delayed compared by 2 or 3,5 or 8 and 10 or 13 days respectively in Japonica and Tonsil type varieties to those at the normal paddy fields. The culm length at salinity paddy fields decreased by 13-39% in Japonica type and 14-35% in Tongil type varieties. But the number of panicles per hill decreased by 16-40% in Japonica type and by 14-35% in Tongil type varieties. The number of grains per panicle in saline paddy fields decreased by 10 to 40% in all varieties, but the percent ripened grain decreased by 20-48% in Japonica type and by 19-51% in Tongil type varieties. 1000 grains weight was decreased by lower than 23% in all varieties, but yield was reduced to 20-62% in Japonica and 25-67% in Tongil type varieties.

  • The changes of resistant starch (RS) contents of cooked rice with soybean and coconut oils under different storage conditions were investigated and RS contents were compared between the rice and cooker types. The japonica (Hopyeong) and the indica (Thailand) type rice were cooked (washed rice: water = 100: 130) using an electric cooker and a saucepan. The coconut oil and soybean oil (3%, based on rice, w/w) were added into cooking water before heating. The RS contents of freeze-dried cooked rice powders (newly-cooked rice, stored for 12 h in the refrigerator, microwave heating after storage for 12 h in the refrigerator) were measured by the AOAC method. The RS contents of cooked rice using a saucepan were higher than those using an electric cooker. The indica type cooked rice had a higher RS content than the japonica type cooked rice, regardless of storage conditions. However, addition of oil before cooking rice resulted in increased RS content on storage in the refrigerator. The highest RS content of the cooked indica type rice with soybean oil ($5.89{\pm}0.22%$) that was stored for 12 h in the refrigerator was analyzed. The results suggested that the cooked rice formed retrograded (RS3) and amylose-lipid complex (RS5) type RS; furthermore, the RS content is affected by storage conditions, rice, cooker and oil types.

  • Gelatinization properties and the molecular structure of Korean waxy rice starchesisolated from two japonica types, Sinseonchal, and Dongjinchal, as well as an indica type, Hangangchal 1 were investigated. Sinseonchal is preferred cultivar for making Korean traditional rice cakes and cookies. Sinseonchal starch was the highest in crude protein, amylopectin, damaged starch contents, and water binding capacity among the cultivars tested. The initial pasting temperature ($72.75^{\circ}C$), peak (360.54 RVU), breakdown (162.21 RVU) and setback (30.83 RVU) viscosities of Sinseonchal had the highest values (p<0.05). Onset and peak temperatures by differential scanning calorimeter were also the highest in Sinseonchal. The molecular weight of Sinseonchal amylopectin was 5.46 107higher than those of the other cultivars, but its peak height and area were the lowest among them. The amylopectin peak by HPSEC showed a shoulder in the lower molecular weight portion and its relative area decreased in the following order; Sinseonchal > Dongjinchal > Hangangchal 1. On the branch chain length distribution of amylopectin, the proportion of DP13-24 and DP25-36 showed reverse trends, with higher japonica type amylopectin in DP13-24.

  • In previously study, we evaluated seed germination for longevity derived from a cross between 'Ilmi' and 'Dharial', a weed rice collected in Bangladesh. The strong germination trait originated from 'Dharial' was incorporated into 'Ilmi', through backcross method. The germination ratio was evaluated after two years of room temperature storage conditions. A high germination ratio of 80.5% in donor plant of 'Dharial' and 77.3% in an introgression lines was observed based on the two years of storage while the recurrent japonica cultivars, 'Ilmi' was failed in germination. In this study, we investigate changes in physicochemical properties of 'Ilmi' and introgression lines (ILs) stored at room temperature. We analyzed germination rate, texture of cooked rice, toyo glossiness value, pasting properties, amylose content, protein content and ${\alpha}-amylase$ content of 'Ilmi' and 5 introgressions every 4 months on the room temperature condition. Seed germinations were decreased by storage periods. Three ILs germination rate was slowly decreased more than 'Ilmi' and 2 another ILs after 4 months. Toyo glossiness value of 'Ilmi' and three ILs were no difference, but, 2 ILs gradually decreased every 4 months at storage periods. Pasting properties were affected by storage temperatures and periods of 'Ilmi' and ILs. The increase at breakdown was observed but setback was decreased by storage periods. Amylose content and protein content were no significant difference at storage periods, respectively. The ${\alpha}-amylase$ content was gradually increased during the storage periods. The introgression line could be useful to increase longevity and maintain quality during storage of japonica rice seed.

  • To clarify the relationship between rice cool injury and the contents of silica and phosphorus in the soils and the rice plant, the investigation was carried out at ripening stage of rice from the different altitudes with different varieties throughout Yeongnam area. The rate of fertilized spikelets were decreased with elevation increase and the situation was distincted in the Japonica cross Indica hybrid varieties. The higher rates of $SiO_2/P_2 O_5$ content in the leaves and stems or lower rates of that in the soils show the higher fertilization rates. The result seems to be caused by the different solubility and uptakes of silica and by the different availability and transformation of phosphorus. A positive correlation was observed between the content of silica in rice plant and the fertilization rates. The fertilization rate in Japonica varieties was higher than that of Indica cross Japonica hybrid varieties in the case of the same content of silica in plant as far as observed, but the increasing rate of fertilized grains due to increase of silica content was prominented in the hybrid varieties which probably demand more silica. Within the certain limit of silica and phosphorus content in rice plant, the more uptaking of silica might lessen the cool injury.

  • To find out the influence of different rice varieties on the emission of methane in the soil and the exudation of carbohydrates from root, the experiment was conducted on a fine silty, mesic family of Aeric Fluventinc Haplaquepts (Jeonbug series). The varities of rise involved one early maturing variety of Japonica type(namweon) and three mid-to-late maturing varieties of Japonica type and one mid-to-late variety of Indica${\times}$Japonica crossed. The methane flux over the rice canopy was measured according to the closed chamber method modified by Shin and the methane concentration in the soil was measured using porous cup installed in the soil. The carbohydrate exudates from root were measured under nutrient solution culture. It was found that the methane flux tended to be lower in early maturing varieties than in the mid-to-late maturing varieties, lower in indica${\times}$Japonica crossed variety than in Japonica type varieties. There was positive correlation between the number of tillers and the weight of roots of rice plant and methane flux. The correlation, however, tended to be greater between the weight of roots and methane flux. There was no significant difference in the concentration of methane in the soil under different varieties of rice, excepting one variety, Kehwa under which methane concentration was highest. In case of carbohydrate exudation, early maturing variety tended to be higher than other varieties, although the opposite was the case in methane flux.

  • A field study was conducted to understand nitrogen use efficiency of high yielding Japonica rice varieties under three levels of nitrogen fertilizer (90, 150 and 210 kg N $ha^{-1}$) in Iksan, Korea. Two high yielding rice varieties, Boramchan and Deuraechan, and an control variety, Dongjin2, were grown in fine silty paddy. Nitrogen use efficiencies (NUE) were 83.3, 56.3, and 41.2 in 90, 150, and 210 kg N $ha^{-1}$ fertilizer level, respectively. Total nitrogen uptake varied significantly among nitrogen levels and varieties. Variety Dongjin2 showed the highest nitrogen uptake efficiency (NUpE), while Boramchan and Deuraechan showed higher nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE). However, Nitrogen harvest index (NHI) was higher in Boramchan (0.58) than Deuraechan (0.57) and Dongjin2 (0.53). Rough rice yield showed linear relationship with total nitrogen uptake ($R^2$=0.72) within the range of nitrogen treatments. Boramchan produced significantly higher rough rice yield (8546 kg $ha^{-1}$) which mainly due to higher number of panicles per $m^2$ compared to Deuraechan (7714 kg $ha^{-1}$). Deuraechan showed higher number of spikelets per panicle, but showed lower yield due to lower number of panicle per $m^2$. Rice varieties showed different nitrogen uptake ability and NUE at different nitrogen level. Plant breeders and agronomist should take advantage of the significant variations and relationships among grain yield, NUpE, and NUE.

  • Studies were made on differences among types and varieties of rice in stomatal density and gas diffusion resistance, and on the relationship between these traits and photosynthetic rate. Significant differences among types and varieties were found stomatal density and gas diffusion resistance. Generally, stomatal density was higher in indica varieties than in Japonica varieties, gas diffusion resistance was lower in the former than in the later, in varieties developed through indica-japonica hybridization it was intermadiate. The stomatal density was closely positively correlated with the gas conductivity and the net photosynthetic rate, was not correlated with single leaf area, and had significant negative correlation with specific leaf weight. Higher photosynthetic rate of indica varieties mainly results from its high stomatal density and low gas diffusion resistance. The result also suggested that high photosynthetic rate might be obtained if the high stomatal density and low gas diffusion resistance in indica could be combined with the larger specific leaf weight in japonica through crossing between two.

  • In order to test cold tolerance of rice plants 16 varieties were treated at day/night temperature of 10/5$^{\circ}C$ at the 2nd, 4th, and 6th leaf stages. Indica$\times$japonica varieties were more sensitive to low temperature than a japonica variety. Among indica$\times$japonica varieties, "Tongil", "Suweon #251", and "Suweon #277" were less sensitive to low temperature compared to other indica$\times$japonica varieties tested. The 4th leaf stage was more sensitive to low temperature than 2nd and 6th leaf stages. than 2nd and 6th leaf stages.
