  • In this paper, the wet mixing method was introduced to prepare spinel lithium manganese oxide (LMO) with $Li_2CO_3$ and $MnCO_3$. The physical properties of the resulting lithium manganese oxide were characterized by the XRD and SEM. The adsorption properties of LMO for $Li^+$ were investigated by batch methods. The maximum adsorption capacity of lithium was calculated from Langmuir isotherm and found to be 27.25 mg/g. The LMO are found to have a remarkable lithium ion-sieve property with distribution coefficients ($K_d$) in the order of $Ca^{2+}$ < $K^+$ < $Na^+$ < $Mg^{2+}$ < $Li^+$, which is promising in the lithium extraction from seawater.

  • The inhibitive action of the aqueous extract of lawsonia, licorice root and carob toward the corrosion of tin electrode in 0.1 M $NaHCO_3$ solutions was investigated using galvanostatic polarization measurements. It was found that the corrosion rate decreases in the presence of these extracts indicating the inhibiting of these compounds. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing extract concentration. The inhibition action of these extracts was explained in view of adsorption of its compounds onto the tin surface, making a barrier to mass and charge transfer. The adsorption of these extracts on the tin surface was found to be a spontaneous process and follow Freundlich adsorption isotherm. It is also found that these extracts provide a good protection to tin against pitting corrosion in chloride containing solution using potentiodynamic anodic polarization technique.

  • Among the various activated carbons available in the market, an optimum mixing method of two kind activated carbons with different adsorbability was investigated in this study. The representative adsorption behaviors of the activated carbon are the adsorption isotherm plots obtained by the BET-Analysis which suggests also basic information of adsorption filter design. So we have tested three cases with certifications, the one was the extreme case of coal cokes based activated carbon with highest BET-model and coconut-shell based activated carbon with the lowest Langmuir-model, the other middle and cross case were applied this method to two kinds of activated carbons with higher and lower specific surface areas which are not available but supplied as research samples by an authority of an Korean Research Institute.

  • Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced using municipal solid waste was pyrolyzed to produce RDF char. For the first time, the RDF char was used to remove aqueous copper, a representative heavy metal water pollutant. Activation of the RDF char using steam and KOH treatments was performed to change the specific surface area, pore volume, and the metal cation quantity of the char. N2 sorption, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the char. The optimum pH for copper removal was shown to be 5.5, and the steam-treated char displayed the best copper removal capability. Ion exchange between copper ions and alkali/alkaline metal cations was the most important mechanism of copper removal by RDF char, followed by adsorption on functional groups existing on the char surface. The copper adsorption behavior was represented well by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum copper removal capacity was determined to be 38.17 mg/g, which is larger than those of other low-cost char adsorbents reported previously.

  • The aim of this study was to characterize quintinite in fluoride removal from aqueous solutions, using batch experiments. Experimental results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of fluoride to quintinite was 7.71 mg/g. The adsorption of fluoride to quintinite was not changed at pH 5-9, but decreased considerably in highly acidic (pH < 3) and alkaline (pH > 11) solution conditions. Kinetic model analysis showed that among the three models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich), the pseudo-second-order model was the most suitable for describing the kinetic data. From the nonlinear regression analysis, the pseudo-second-order parameter values were determined to be $q_e=0.18mg/g$ and $k_2=28.80g/mg/hr$. Equilibrium isotherm model analysis demonstrated that among the three models (Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson), both the Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson models were suitable for describing the equilibrium data. The model analysis superimposed the Redlich-Peterson model fit on the Freundlich fit. The Freundlich model parameter values were determined from the nonlinear regression to be $K_F=0.20L/g$ and 1/n=0.51. This study demonstrated that quintinite could be used as an adsorbent for the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions.

  • The complex combination of organic contaminants in the wastewater made water treatment challenging; hence, organic matter in water bodies is usually measured in terms of organic carbon. Since it is important to identify the types of compounds when deciding suitable treatment methods, this study implemented a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the organic matter content in an actual graywater sample from Ulsan, Republic of Korea using mass spectroscopy (MS). The graywater was treated using adsorption to remove the organic contaminants. Using orbitrap MS, the organic matter content between an untreated graywater and the treated effluent were compared which yielded a significant formula count difference for the samples. It was revealed that CHON formula has the highest removal count. Isotherm studies found that the Freundlich equation was the best fit with a coefficient of determination ($R^2$) of 0.9705 indicating a heterogenous GAC surface with a multilayer characteristic. Kinetics experiments fit the pseudo-second order equation with an $R^2$ of 0.9998 implying that chemisorption is the rate-determining step between the organic compounds and GAC at rate constant of $52.53g/mg{\cdot}h$. At low temperatures, the reaction between GAC and organic compounds were found to be spontaneous and exothermic. The conditions for optimization were set to achieve a maximum DOC and TN removal which yielded removal percentages of 94.59% and 80.75% for the DOC and TN, respectively. The optimum parameter values are the following: pH 6.3, 2.46 g of GAC for every 30 mL of graywater sample, 23.39 hrs contact time and $38.6^{\circ}C$.

  • Inhibition effects of cysteine(Cys), methionine(Met), and histidine(His) on the corrosion of cobalt were investigated in deaerated 0.5 M HCl and 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. All the inhibition efficiency (IE) in the amino acids for the cobalt corrosion depended on the mixed inhibition. However, IE in the solution of $H_2SO_4$ depended more on the anodic and in the solution of HCl on the cathodic inhibition. Amino acid adsorption process on cobalt surface in the solution can be explained by modified Langmuir isotherm. The molecules of histidine dissolved in both of the solution were physically adsorbed due to the electrostatic interaction between the surface of {$Co-Cl^{-{\delta}}$} and the {$-NH_3{^+}$} or {$-NH^+=$} of His. However the other cases of adsorption in this investigation can be explained by chemical adsorption between the empty d-orbital of Co and the lone pair of electron in S-atom in Cys and Met.

  • Polyethylenimine-crosslinked chitin (PEI-chitin) was developed as a biosorbent to effectively remove dyestuffs from dye-containing wastewater. A representative reactive dye, Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) was used as a model dye. The effect of pH, isotherm, kinetic and desorption experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption/desorption ability of PEI-chitin for RO16. As a result, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model was 266.3 mg/g at pH 2, and the time needed for adsorption equilibrium was evaluated to be about 20, 60, and 240 min for 50, 100, and 200 mg/L, respectively. The desorption experiments were carried out using various eluents such as ammonia/ethanol mixture, NaOH, $NaHCO_3$, and $Na_2CO_3$, and the highest desorption rate was 75.24% in the ammonia/ethanol mixture.

  • Recently, a number of studies have been conducted on photocatalysts and adsorbents that can remove harmful substances to improve environmental problems related to fine particles. In this study, a porous foam composites were fabricated using palm-based activated carbon having a large amount of micro-pores and foam concrete with a significantly larger total pore volume compared to general construction materials. To evaluate the adsorption potential of fine particles, the pore structure of the foam composites were analyzed. For the analysis of the pore structure of the foam composite, BET and Harkins-jura theory were applied from the measured nitrogen adsorption isotherm. From the results of the analysis, the specific surface area and micro-pore volume of the foam composite containing activated carbon increased significantly compared to Plain. As thereplacement of activated carbon increased, the specific surface area and micro-pore volume of the foam composite tended to increase. It seems that the foam composite has high adsorption performance for gaseous fine particle precursor such as nitrogen oxides.

  • Background: Recently, biological adsorbents have been developed for removing radionuclides from radioactive liquid waste due to their high selectivity, eco-friendliness, and renewability. However, since they can be damaged by radiation in radioactive waste, a method for estimating the bio-adsorbent performance as a time should consider the radiation damages in terms of their renewability. This paper aims to develop a simulation method that applies a deep learning technique to rapidly and accurately estimate the adsorption performance of bio-adsorbents when inserted into liquid radioactive waste. Materials and Methods: A model that describes various interactions between a bio-adsorbent and liquid has been constructed using numerical methods to estimate the adsorption capacity of the bio-adsorbent. To generate datasets for machine learning, Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) simulations were conducted while considering radioactive concentrations in the adsorbent column. Results and Discussion: Compared with the result of the conventional method, the proposed method indicates that the accuracy is in good agreement, within 0.99% and 0.06% for the R2 score and mean absolute percentage error, respectively. Furthermore, the estimation speed is improved by over 30 times. Conclusion: Note that an artificial neural network can rapidly and accurately estimate the survival rate of a bio-adsorbent from radiation ionization compared with the MCNP simulation and can determine if the bio-adsorbents are reusable.
