  • This paper describes a new measurement method of resistive current and the technique of deterioration diagnosis for ZnO element. The consequence of current increasing (resistive current) with time is the eventual attainment of a state of thermal instability that may lead to arrester failure. So, it is very important to measure a leakage current of ZnO arrester installed at on-state. For the high-precision and more reliability, an iron core, which has a very high relative permeability, was used for increasing detection sensitivity, and we also used the personal computer for the data storage and program and analysis. And we have verified the reliability and performance of the sensing device through several laboratory tests.

  • This paper describes the technique of deterioration diagnosis for ZnO element. Due to the non-linear resistance of ZnO block, the total leakage current contains harmonics when arrester deteriorated. The most significant harmonics is the 3rd order component. So, it can be used as an indicator of the arrester condition. An iron core, which has a very high relative permeability, is used for increasing detection sensitivity and the 3th order harmonics of leakage current was detected by band-pass circuit. And we have verified the reliability and performance of the sensing device through several laboratory tests.

  • This research presents a topology optimization for manipulating the main heat flow in coupled magneto-thermal systems. The heat generated by eddy currents is considered in the design domain assuming an adiabatic boundary. For a practical optimization, the convection condition is considered in the topological process of the thermal field. Topology design sensitivity is derived by employing the discrete system equations combined with the adjoint variable method. As numerical examples, a simple iron and a C-core design heated-up by eddy currents demonstrate the strength of the proposed approach to solve the coupled problem.

  • To demonstrate the applicability of super-conductors to electric power machines, the authors made and tested a small single-phase superconducting transformer. The aim of the study was to determine the fundamental properties of superconducting trans former. Therefore the superconducting transformer has a simple structure, i.e. the high voltage to low one ratio is 2:1 and the iron core is immersed in liquid helium. Fundamental characteristics are obtained through no-load and short-circuit tests. In this paper, the experimental results are described.

  • In this paper, a moving iron core type LOA is designed and analyzed electro-magnetically and is applied to the active control of structural vibration as an active mass driver. Structural vibration is sensored by the accelerometer attached the structure and reduced by the optimally controlled motion of active mass of LOA giving anti-phase inertia farce to the structure. As a result, the basement of the application of LOA as an active mass driver is successfully established.

  • Magnetic couplings are widely used in various industrial applications because they can transmit magnetic force without any mechanical contact. In addition, linear couplings have many advantages. For example, they do not need to convert rotary motion to linear motion. This paper shows an analytical analysis of tubular type linear magnetic couplings (TLMCs) with a Halbach array magnetized permanent magnet (PM). An analytical method for magnetic fields owing to PMs is performed by using magnetic vector potential as well as Poisson and Laplace equations. Then, the magnetic force is calculated by using the Maxwell stress tensor. The analytical analysis results were compared with finite element method (FEM) results. In addition, we predicted the magnetic force characteristic according to design parameters such as the iron core thickness, inner PM thickness to -outer PM thickness ratio, PM segment ratio of the axial magnetized PM segment and radial magnetized PM segment, and various pole numbers.

  • The inductor which is used at low frequency as the main part of magnetic ballast consists of an iron core, a bobbin and coil. The conventional inductor design method is not suitable for the magnetic ballast because it has various variables and is not a unique method for the magnetic ballast. Thus, this paper presents the optimal design method for a lamination type inductor using a magnetic ballast for Metal Halide Lamps. Also, the optimal inductor design method is researched for inductors of dimming ballasts and ignitors that have a gate-triggered structure using a SCR thyristor. By the simulation and experimental results, we showed that the proposed design methods is valid.

  • This paper discussed the following. 1. After reaching the final phase of an oil-based society, a resource-saving and -recycling "Methane Energy-based Society" will come about because of limited natural resources. 2. Industrial Infrastructure Technologies which support the Methane Energy-based Society will cause a paradigm shift in the area of industrial, transportation and civilian sectors. 3. The Non-communication application technology of microwaves plays an important role as one of the core element technologies which comprise new industrial infrastructure technologies.

  • In the paper, aging of insulating oil in pole transformer has been studied by performing accelerated thermal aging test. Dissolved gases were extracted by air bubbling method. Concentration of dissolved gases were modified by extraction ratio of each gases in insulating oil. Aging of insulating materials were proceeded by thermal degradation and oxidation reaction. Both of the reactions followed zeroch order kinetics. Formation rate equations for hydrocarbons, carbon oxides, and hydrogen were derived. It was conformed by gas analysis and UV-Visible spectrophotometric method that iron core and copper coil in pole transformer act as catalyst during the aging process.
