  • A dependable boundary reconstruction technique is proposed. The finite element method is used for the analysis of the direct heat conduction problem to realize the deformable grid system. An appropriate strategy for grid update is suggested. A complete sensitivity analysis is performed to obtain the derivatives required for restoration of the optimal boundary. With the result of the sensitivity analysis, the unknown boundary is sought using the sequential quadratic programming. The method is applied to reconstruction of boundaries with sinusoidal, step, and cavity form. The overall performance of the proposed method is examined by comparison between the estimated the exact boundaries.

  • Most of structural analyses are concerned with the deformation and stress in a body subjected to external loads. In many fields, however, the interpretation of inverse problems is needed to determine surface tractions or internal stresses. In this study, the inverse processes by using the finite elements and the boundary elements are formulated for the evaluation of internal residual stresses from displacements measured on a remote surface. Small errors in the measured displacements often result in a substantial loss of accuracy of an inverse system. We use the Tikhonov regularization techniques to regularize the ill-conditioned system. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed through numerical examples.

  • In order to evaluate the corrosion of reinforcing steel-bars (rebar) in concrete, a nondestructive evaluation by the half-cell potential method is currently applied. In this study, potentials measured on a concrete surface are compensated into those on the concrete-rebar interface by the inverse boundary element method (IBEM). Because these potentials are obtained three-dimensionally (3-D), 3-D visualization is desirable. To this end, a visualization system has been developed by using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). As an application, results of a reinforced concrete (RC) slab with corroded rebars are visualized and discussed.

  • Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are becoming very popular in various industries due to their effectiveness of the utilization of their constituent elements. However, the modelling of these materials is difficult due to the complex nature of variation of material properties across the thickness. Many shear deformation theories have been developed and employed for the analysis of such functionally graded plates (FGPs). A recently developed inverse hyperbolic shear deformation theory has been successfully employed by Grover et al. [1] for the analysis of laminated composites and sandwich plates. The objective of the study is to obtain finite element solution for the structural analysis of functionally graded plates using inverse hyperbolic shear deformation theory. Finite element analysis facilitates the analysis of complex problems such as functionally graded plates with different boundary conditions and different loadings.

  • It is well known that acoustic signals, even measured in an anechoic chamber, can be contaminated due to the wall interference. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the original signal from the measured data, which is very critical for the case of measurement of source signal in a water tunnel. In this thesis, new methods for the reconstruction of sound sources are proposed and validated by using Boundary Element Method from measured data in a closed space. The inverse Helmholtz integral equation and its normal derivative are used for the reconstruction of sound sources in a closed space. An arbitrary Kirchhoff surface over the sources is proposed to solve the surface information instead of direct solution for the source. Although sound sources are not directly known by the inverse Helmholtz equation, the original sound source of pressure-field outside of the wall can be indirectly obtained by using this new method.

  • Nearfield acoustic holography method predicts an unmeasured sound field, therefore it depends on its prediction methods. In particular, if one has radiators or scatters, which cannot be expressed by simple geometry, then inverse boundary element method (BEM) is normally employed to reconstruct the sound field induced by sound sources with irregular profiles. The characteristics of boundary element, including the element shape, characteristic length, order of shape function and others, affect the reconstruction error. Investigating the errors by means of changing these factors will provide a guide line for selecting appropriate factors, associated with the elements of BEM. These factors are investigated by numerical simulations, and the accuracies with respect to the variant factors are compared. Novel suggestions for selecting appropriate boundary element factors are described based on the simulation results.

  • Non-singular boundary element method (BEM) codes are developed in acoustics application. The BEM code is then used to calculate unknown boundary surface normal displacements and surface pressures from known exterior near field pressures. And then the calculated surface normal displacements and surface pressures are again applied to the BEM in forward in order to calculate reconstructed field pressures. (omitted)

  • The convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of a large liquid petroleum liquid injection(LPLi) engine piston are analyzed by solving an inverse thermal conduction problem. The heat transfer coefficients are numerically found so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. Using the resulting heat transfer coefficients as the boundary condition, temperature of a large LPLi engine piston is analyzed.

  • An efficient method to predict the convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the engine piston is proposed. The method is based on the inverse method of the thermal conduction problem and uses a numerical optimization technique. In the method, the heat transfer coefficients are numerically obtained so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. The method can be effectively used to analyze the temperature distribution of engine pistons in case when application of prescribed-temperature boundary condition is not reasonable because of insufficient number of measured temperatures. A hollow sphere problem with an analytic solution is taken as a simple example and accuracy and efficiency is demonstrated. The method is applied to a practical large liquid petroleum gas(LPG) engine piston and the heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the piston is successfully calculated. Resulting analyzed temperature favorably coincides with measured temperature.
