  • Some wheelchair users with neuromuscular disorders experience involuntary extensor thrusts, which may cause injuries via impact with the wheelchair, cause the user to slide out of the wheelchair seat, and damage the wheelchair. Knowledge of the human-generated forces during an extensor thrust is of great importance in devising safer, more comfortable wheelchairs. This paper presents an efficient method for identifying human-generated forces during an extensor thrust. We used an inverse dynamic approach with a three-link human body model and a system for measuring human body motion. We developed an experimental system that determines the angular motion of each human body segment and the force at the footrest, which was used to overcome the mathematical indeterminacy of the problem. The proposed method was validated experimentally, illustrating the force-identification process during an extensor thrust.

  • This research aims to determine an optimal (best) solution for transporting the logistics at a minimum cost from various sources to various destinations. We proposed a new algorithm for the initial basic feasible solution (IBFS). Developing a new IBFS is the first step towards finding the optimal solution. A new approach for the initial basic feasible solution that reduces iterations and produces the best answer in the initial process of the transportation issue. Different IBFS approaches have been generated in the literature review. Some statistical fundamentals, such as normal distribution and the root mean square technique, are employed to find new IBFS. A TP is transformed into a normal distribution, and penalties are determined using the root mean square method. Excel Solver is used to calculate normal distribution values. The second step involves using a stepping-stone approach to compute the optimum solution. The results of our study were calculated using numerical examples and contrasted with a few other methodologies, such as Vogel's approximation, the Continuous Allocation Method (CAM), the Supply Demand Repair Method (SDRM), and the Karagul-Sahin Approximation Method (KSAM). The conclusion of our proposed method gives more accurate results than the existing approach.

  • This study proposes an inverse method for estimating the boundary temperature in a gas-filled, onedimensional parallel domain enclosed by parallel plates. The distance between the plates is considered submicron to one mm. In the current method, it is assumed that the conditions of both heat flux and temperature are simultaneously applicable to one boundary, while no conditions are applicable to the other boundary The temperature on one of the boundaries should be inversely determined from the known temperature and heat flux on the other boundary. This study proposes a procedure for estimating the unknown boundary temperature through Monte Carlo simulation. Both the forward and inverse problems employ the Monte Carlo approach. The forward (direct) problem is solved by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo while the inverse solution is obtained by the simulated annealing.

  • In this paper, we analyze the necessary and sufficient condition introduced in [5]: that a functional F in $L^2(C_{a,b}[0,T])$ has an integral transform ${\mathcal{F}}_{{\gamma},{\beta}}F$, also belonging to $L^2(C_{a,b}[0,T])$. We then establish the inverse integral transforms of the functionals in $L^2(C_{a,b}[0,T])$ and then examine various properties with respect to the inverse integral transforms via the translation theorem. Several possible outcomes are presented as remarks. Our approach is a new method to solve some difficulties with respect to the inverse integral transform.

  • This paper deals with the method of self-equilibrium stress mode analysis of cable dome structures. From the point of view of analysis, cable dome structure is a kind of unstable truss structure which is stabilized by means of introduction of prestressing. The prestress must be introduced according to a specific proportion among different structural member and it is determined by an analysis called self-equilibrium stress mode analysis. The mathematical equation involved in the self-equilibrium stress mode analysis is a system of linear equations which can be solved numerically by adopting the concept of Moore-Penrose generalized inverse. The calculation of the generalized inverse is carried out by rank factorization method. This method involves a parameter called epsilon which plays a critical role in self-equilibrium stress mode analysis. It is thus of interest to investigate the range of epsilon which produces consistent solution during the analysis of self-equilibrium stress mode.

  • Modern super-tall buildings are more sensitive to strong winds. The evaluation of wind loads for the design of these buildings is of primary importance. A direct monitoring of wind forces acting on super-tall structures is quite difficult to be realized. Indirect measurements interpreted by inverse techniques are therefore favourable since dynamic response measurements are easier to be carried out. To this end, a Kalman filtering based inverse approach is developed in this study so as to estimate the wind loads on super-tall buildings based on limited structural responses. The optimum solution of Kalman filter gain by solving the Riccati equation is used to update the identification accuracy of external loads. The feasibility of the developed estimation method is investigated through the wind tunnel test of a typical super-tall building by using a Synchronous Multi-Pressure Scanning System. The effects of crucial factors such as the type of wind-induced response, the covariance matrix of noise, errors of structural modal parameters and levels of noise involved in the measurements on the wind load estimations are examined through detailed parametric study. The effects of the number of vibration modes on the identification quality are studied and discussed in detail. The made observations indicate that the proposed inverse approach is an effective tool for predicting the wind loads on super-tall buildings.

  • Nonlinear ill-posed problems arise in many application including parameter estimation and inverse scattering. We introduce a least squares regularization method to solve nonlinear ill-posed problems with constraints robustly and efficiently. The regularization method uses Trust-Region approach to handle the constraints on variables. The Generalized Cross Validation is used to choose the regularization parameter in computational tests. Numerical results are given to exhibit faster convergence of the method over other methods.

  • Through matched filtering synthetic aperture radar (SAR) produces high-resolution imagery from data collected by a relative small antenna. While the impulse response obtained by the matched filter approach produces the best achievable signal-to-noise ratio, large sidelobes must be reduced to obtain higher-resolution SAR images. So, many enhancement methods of SAR imagery have been proposed. As a deconvolution method, the phase-extension inverse filtering is based on the characteristics of the matched filtering used in SAR imaging. It improves spatial resolution as well as effectively suppresses the sidelobes with low computational complexity. In the phase-extension inverse filtering, the impulse response is obtained from simulation with a point target. But in a real SAR environment, for example ERS-1, the impulse response is distorted by many non-ideal factors. So, in the phase-extension inverse filtering for a real SAR processing, the magnitudes of the frequency transfer function have to be compensated to produce more desirable results. In this paper, an estimation method to obtain a more accurate impulse response from a real SAR image is studied. And a compensation scheme to produce better performance of the phase-extension inverse filtering is also introduced.

  • This paper proposes a method for sufficient dimension reduction (SDR) of mixture data. We consider mixture data containing more than one component that have distinct central subspaces. We adopt an approach of a model-based sliced inverse regression (MSIR) to the mixture data in a simple and intuitive manner. We employed mixture probabilistic principal component analysis (MPPCA) to estimate each central subspaces and cluster the data points. The results from simulation studies and a real data set show that our method is satisfactory to catch appropriate central spaces and is also robust regardless of the number of slices chosen. Discussions about root selection, estimation accuracy, and classification with initial value issues of MPPCA and its related simulation results are also provided.

  • In this study, the solution of Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko integral equation in the inverse scattering problem is efficiently solved for arbitrarily specified spectra pattern which are reflected from the restricted potential. The procedure is based on the successive approach without iterations. This method lessens the truncation errors which plague conventional design schemes using specific windows for reflection coefficients. It is shown that the method is adequate for the synthesis of the continuously varying one-dimensional potential of the nonuniformly distributed dielectric constants.
