Telecommunications Infrastructures and Services Development and Challenges in Nepal

  • The world's unique geographical, multilingual, multiethnic, multiracial and multi religious Himalayan country Nepal has more than 100 years history on telephony service and it has been formulating appropriate policy and regulation for the adoption of new technology, introducing the competitive market environment for the overall development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures and application of ICT service and tools for socio-economic transformation. The Nepalese market seems to be continuously growing and having huge demand of mobile telephony and internet subscriptions trend. The ICT infrastructure development in difficult geographical area is quite challenging and thus operators are focusing mobile telephony and mobile internet services. Nepal has been doing its best effort on formulating policy and regulation, adoption key strategies for ICT sector development and at the same time joining hands with international and regional bodies such as ITU, SAARC etc for ICT sector development. Due to geographical diversity, policy and regulatory barriers in some extent, power supply constraints and low affordability from customers on ICT tools and services, Nepal has been facing challenges on ICT infrastructure development. However, the national statistics on ICT, Networked Readiness Index and ICT Development Index show that Nepal has done quite good progress and is keeping its pace on ICT development despite the these challenges. Moreover, there seems to be quite uncovered market segments on internet service and big opportunity on ICT sector development in Nepal in the days to come.

  • Voice of U(VoIP) technology Provides voice service as well as data service via Internet. It has been a promising technology as Internet grows fast and the requirements are increasing. Recently, serveral protocols have been created to allow telephone calls to be made over IP networks, notably, SIP and H.323. Due to introducing SIP and H.323, There are many change at internet telephony service. Internet telephony enables a wealth of new service possibility Users can control telephony service directly. In this paper, we design and implementation CPL client based on SIP system.

  • The internet call systems using CTI(Computer Telephony Integration) functions are designed with system configuration, DFD(Data Flow Diagram) and ERD(Entity Relationship Diagram) in this paper. The internet call systems are constructed to cooperate with conventional CTI call center. The internet phone calls occurred from the web browser of customer can be connected throughout VoIP gateway and PBX to many counselors. The internet call systems can provide various services; customer information service, escorted browsing service, text chatting service, text sharing service, conference service, and statistical analysis service.

An Estimation of Call Demand for the Internet Telephony (국내 인터넷전화의 통화수요 추정)

  • In this study, an estimation of call demand for the internet telephony was carried out using the monthly time-series data from June 2001 to December 2004. In the estimation, the call traffic was assumed to be explained by tariff of the internet telephony service, tariff of fixed and wireless services, income, quality of service, and lagged traffic variable. The traffic is assumed to follow the partial adjustment mechanism. The estimation result shows that the call traffic demand is elastic to the tariff of the service while it is inelastic to the change of income. The qualisty of service is regarded as an important factor of demand. Also there appeared the call demand is adjusting to the change of explanatory variables with some lags.

  • The VoIP (Voice over IP) is being used world-widely and already put to practical use in many fields. However, it is needed to ensure the security of VoIP call in special situations. It is relatively difficult to eavesdrop commonly used PSTN network in that a 1:1 circuit connects it. However, it is difficult to ensure the security of a call on Internet because many users are connected to the Internet concurrently. This paper suggests a new model for Internet telephony to prevent eavesdrops, using VoIP (using SIP protocol) with the use the VPN protocol and establish the feasibility of its practical use comparing it with the conventional Internet telephony.

  • The fast advance in the VoIP technologies gives a rich opportunity to create different kind of VoIP applications such as IP telephony services. The application level call signaling protocols such as ITU-T H.323 and IETF SIP provide the communication functions of end-to-end call setup and release. Currently, there is a lot of H.323 based VoIP products in the market, however SIP is considered as a suitable protocol for supporting applications in IP environments, so SIP based VoIP products and services begin to appear. In this paper, firstly we present the characteristics of some possible SIP based applications and describe the design and implementation of a VoIP example service named PC-to-PC Internet telephony service using the developed SIP network components. The PC-to-PC Internet telephony service and User Agent are developed in MS window 98/2000 using visual C/C++, and Proxy server and Registrar in Linux 7.0 using C, respectively.

  • SIP(Session Initiation Protocol) is a suitable protocol for supporting Internet telephony services and currently market requirements fur developing supplementary telephony services such as unconditional call forwarding, call forwarding on busy or no answer, call filtering services have recently grown. CPL(Call Processing Language) is a standard technology that can be used to describe and control internet telephony services. In this paper, we describe the CPL system for supplementary Internet telephony services using SIP as an application level call signaling protocol. Those supplementary services are composed of CPL client which is a SIP UA, SIP Proxy server, Registrar and CPL server In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the CPL server system in detail which is developed in Linux 7.2 using C and C++ programming languages.

  • Various services such as IPTV(Internet Protocol TV), Internet Telephony are provided through multiple ISPs(Internet Service Providers) as ICT technologies are evolving. This paper suggests that the end-to-end Internet service quality evaluation method, which is optimized for domestic environment based on international standards. The end-to-end service quality determines the quality of IPTV and Internet Telephony services and is critical factor for subjective quality as well. As a result, time delay, jitter and packet loss rate are three elements for the quality evaluation. It is also shown that these factors can be predicted with traditional statistical method by sharing minimum amount of information between ISPs.

  • According as internet service diffusion is popularized by internet user's increase, internet telehpony technology is becoming main issue of Internet Service Providers. Standardization issue about technologies related VoIP is discussed keeping in step on market's fast change and request in IETF. Specially, Standardizaiton is working through discussion on MMUSIC WG, SIP WG, SIPPING WG about SIP that is proposed by the alternative of ITU-T's H.323. Therefore in this Paper, introduce SIP standard that is established through several reconsideration revision works, and examine about IETF's trend for SIP based internet telephony service.
