The purpose of this study is to evaluate the paddy irrigation efficiency using real-time water level monitoring data and intermittent irrigation model in Gimjae, Dong-Jin irrigation district. For this study, the real-time water level data in Gimjae main canal and other secondary canals were collected from 2012 to 2014 and converted to daily discharge using rating curve in each canal. From intermittent irrigation model in paddy, irrigation water requirement was estimated and irrigation efficiency was calculated. The average amount of irrigation water supply per unit irrigation area was 1,011 mm in Gimjae main canal for 12,749 ha irrigation area, 1,011 mm in the secondary canal of upper region and 1,470 mm in the secondary canal of lower region. The median irrigation loss was 43 % in Gimjae main canal, 25 % in secondary canal of upper region and 35 % in the secondary canal of lower region. The larger irrigation area is, the irrigation loss rates tend to decrease in secondary canals. Monthly median irrigation losses in upper region were 10 (June) - 40 % (September) and those in lower region were 25 (May) to 40 % (April, June, August, and September). The results of canal management loss can be available as the basic data for irrigation water management and estimating guideline of optimal irrigation water supply to improve agricultural water use efficiencies.

Water control is mainly one of the key factors that can affect nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emissions from soils. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of intermittent drainage compared to continuous flooding (conventional water regime) on $N_2O$ emission to global warming potential (GWP) with NPK (standard cultivation practice), NPK+Straw, and PK fertilizations. Nitrous oxide emission rates were collected twice a week using a closed chamber method. With continuous flooding, nitrogen (N) application increased $N_2O$ emission by 106.6% ($0.64kg\;ha^{-1}$ in NPK) with respect to the PK treatment ($0.31kg\;ha^{-1}$), and straw addition to NPK enhanced 148.3% of seasonal $N_2O$ flux ($0.77kg\;ha^{-1}$ in NPK+Straw). Although seasonal $N_2O$ emission slightly increased by 16.1-42.9% with intermittent irrigation, its seasonal $CH_4$ emission drastically reduced at 43.5-52.8% resulting in a lower GWP at 48.9-58.5% with respect to that of continuously flooded treatments ($4.51Mg\;CO_2\;ha^{-1}$, PK; $7.60Mg\;CO_2\;ha^{-1}$, NPK; $14.55Mg\;CO_2\;ha^{-1}$, NPK+Straw). Rice yield, at similar fertilization with the continuously-flooded rice field, was not affected by intermittent irrigation. Conclusively, intermittent irrigation can be very effective and a rational soil management strategy to mitigate GWP with considering rice productivity in a temperate paddy rice field like Korea.
Irrigated and flooded rice paddy contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) that affect climate. This in turn affects the supply and reliability of the water needed for rice production. This dynamic makes current rice production methods foreseeably less sustainable over time while having other undesirable effects. Intermittent irrigation by a means of the system of rice intensification (SRI) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD) methods was reviewed to reduce global warming potential (GWP) from 29% to 90% depending on site-specific characteristics from flooded rice paddy and analyzed to be a promising option for enhancing the productivity of water as well, an increasingly constraining resource. Additional benefits associated with the SRI/AWD can be less arsenic in the grain and less degradation of water quality in the run-off from rice paddies. Adoption and expansion of intermittent irrigation of SRI/AWD may require costly public and private investments in irrigation infrastructure that can precisely make irrigation control, and the involvement and upgrading of water management agencies and farmer organizations to enhance management capabilities. Private and public collaboration as a means of earning carbon credit under the clean-development mechanism (CDM) with SRI/AWD for industries to meet as a part of their GHG emission quota as well as a social contribution and publicity program could contribute to adopt intermittent irrigation and rural investment and development. Also, inclusion of SRI and AWD in programs designed under CDM and/or in official development assistance (ODA) projects could contribute to climate-change mitigation and help to achieve UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The purpoes of this thesis is to study the effect of the variation of the beginning date of the suspension of irrigation and the length of intermittent suspension period of irrigation in the paddy field on the growth and yield of rice, so as the provide a critical limit of saving irrigation water and an irrigation method to prevent drough damage in rice cultivation. In this experiment, the rice variety adopted was NONGRIM No.29. There were seven main test plot, each test plot having a different beginning date of the suspension of irrigation. A main test plot was susdivided into five small test plots, each having a different length of the suspension period of irrigation. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows: 1. The number of tillers is controlled by the treatment of the suspension of irrigation, its beginning date being early of late. The reductive effects of beginning dates of suspension upon the number of tillers. investigated on July 30, are about 84% for the treatment suspended on July 8, 87% on July 12, and 92% on July 19, respectively, in comparison with the standard plot. However. the suspenion treatments after the foregoing dates does not affect the control of their numbers. On the other hand, the lengths of intermittent suspension periods influence highly on the number of tillers to be restrained considerably, the decrease ratio ranging from 91% to 80% Both treatments on dates and periods are so intermingled that the restraining effects of suspension periods become greater as the dates of its beginning are earlier. 2. The elongation of plant hieghts also restrained considerably by the longer periods and earlier dates of suspension treatments of irrigation. Especially, the effects of the lengths of suspension periods become more serious. 3. Heading dates are delayed by two to five days through the suspension treatments of irrigation. However, the heading stage ends almost on the same day without relation to the differences between the irrigation suspension treatments. In the test plot where the suspension date of irrigation comes after the young panicle forming stage, the heading stage ends one or two days later than in the standard test plot. 4. Both culm lengths and panicle lengths show significant differences in their values, i.e., their lengths are shorter, as the begining dates of irrigation suspension are earlier and the suspension periods are longer. 5. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the less is the number of panicles per hill in comparison with the standard plot. 6. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the higher is the significant difference in the number of kernels per panicle in comparison with that in the standard test plot, i.e., the less is the number of kernels per panicle. 7. The earlier the beginning date and the longer the period of irrigation suspension, the lighter are the weights of rough rice and straws per hill in comparison with those in the standard plot.
Methane flux from a rice paddy in Korea was measured to study the effects of water management and rice straw application on methane emission under different water managements ; flooding and intermittent irrigation, and with or without rice straw application. Methane emission ranged from 0.066 to $0.455g\;CH_4m^{-2}d^{-1}$. Intermittent irrigation has shown a mitigation effect of methane emission, 70% in NPK plot and 47% in NPK plus rice straw plot, relative to that of flooding. Methane emission from Korean paddy was estimated as 399,590tons per year assuming that paddy fields were managed under intermittent irrigation and rice straw application. This estimation was lower than that of OECD's by 56%, Neue's by 51%, and Matthew's by 62%, while higher than that of Taylor's by 118%.
In order to identify the effect of cadmium uptake by soil ameliorators in rice plants, compost, lime, silicate, and phosphate were treated. Plants were grown with irrigation water containing $0.01mg\;l^{-1}$ cadmium and treated with two irrigation systems, intermittent irrigation and continuous submersion. Soil pH was higher at the panicle formation stage compared to other growing stages. However, Eh value was decreased as growing stage was proceeded. Eh values measured at the continuous submersion plots were lower than those at the intermittent irrigation plots. Cadmium contents in the both leaves and roots of rice plants grown at the continuous submersion plots were lower than intermittent irrigation plots in the middle of growing season. Among the continuous submersion plots, cadmium uptake was highly reduced at the both silicate and lime treated plot compared to other treatments. In the harvest season, cadmium contents in the both leaves and brown rice were higher at the intermittent irrigation plots than the continuous submersion plots. Cadmium uptake was highly reduced at the compost and lime mixture plot compared to other treatments among the continuous submersion plots. Soil pH was negatively correlated with the cadmium contents of the both shoot and brown rice while Eh was positively correlated with those. The cadmium content of shoot was positively correlated with that of brown rice in the harvest season.

When this experiment was treated with various factors of times and vacant intervals of intermittent irrigation in order to search for the effect on the growth of rice-plant and ti's amount of havestr, the following results were obtained during the period of this study. 1. Temperature was high, precipitution during nuturitive growing period, was suitable and Much rainfull, scanty sunlight during reproductive growing period and especially during decrease-sementation period, the cultivative situation of rice-plant of 1968 was almost similar to that of mean year. 2. It was found out that the quality of irrigated water used in the experioment was due to ti's neutural acidity. 3. The soil used in each experimental section was good for fertiligation and similar to the quality of general soil according to the result of soil analysis. 4. It was generally found out that the earlier times of intermittent irrigating and the longer vacant intervals of intermittent irrigation, the worse the growing condition of segmentation period was. 5. When vacant intervals of suspension of water supply were longer, the begining of being in ear of rice-plant ant the time tended to be late about one day. 6. In the view of the growth of maturity period and the amount of intermittent irrigation, it tended to be that the length of stalk of rice-plant was short when time of intermittent irrigation began earlier and the length of ear which came from any various section was not different. When times intermittent of irrigation began gradually early, the number of ears, grains and the weight of grains tended to decrease depending on times of that. All the growing of rice-plant and the amount of havesty tended to decrease, depending on which vacant intervals of intermittent irrigation were long. Finally, it was founedt out that from the point of view of the statistical analysis of weight of grains, it was more then 1% what highly significance of mutual action between times and vacant intermittent irrigation was researched.
Turnover rate of applied rice straw and rice straw compost in a rice paddy soil under the flooding and intermittent irrigation was studied. The chambers in duplicate were either planted or unplanted with rice. For planted chambers, the turnover rate to methane under the flooding increased with freshness of organic materials applied: 14.9% for RS5 (rice straw applied in May), 9.5 % for RS2 (rice straw incorporated in February), and 4.0% for RSC (rice straw compost amended in May). Similar trend was found in turnover rate to methane under the intermittent irrigation: 9.8% for RS5, 5.5% for RS2, and 2.1% for RSC. For planted chambers, turnover rate to methane under the flooding was generally 1.64 times higher than that under the intermittent irrigation. In contrast, for unplanted chambers, the turnover rate to methane under the flooding increased with freshness of organic materials applied: 8.7% for RS5, 3.3% for RS2, and 3.0% for RSC. Similar trend was observed in chambers under the intermittent irrigation: 5.4% for RS5, 3.0% for RS2, and 1.4% for RSC. For unplanted chambers, the turnover rate to methane under the flooding was generally 1.52 times higher than that under the intermittent irrigation.

A field study was performed to investigate the effect of water saving irrigation method on water use efficiency and rice yield. The field plot was 40a (40 ${\times}$ 100m) in size and located at Buryangmyun, Kimjae city, Chonbuk province. Field measurements were made during the growing seasons, May to September of the year 1998 and 1990. Irrigation water volume, drainage water volume, rainfall and ponding depth were measured. Irrigation water management practice employed was such that to keep the ponding depth about 3 to 4cm by intermittent irrigation with drying the soil surface until hair cracks emerge before the next irrigation. The amounts of water volume irrigated and drained were measured by pipe flow meter and ponding depth was observed by using a partly buried 120mm diameter PVC pipe. The results showed that the irrigation water depths, the rainfalls, and the drainage depths were 379mm, 458mm, and 448mm in 1988, and 274mm, 819mm, and 736mm in 1990, respectively. The average yield was 590kg per 10a. The water saving irrigation method saved irrigation water by about 20% with higher yield compared with the traditional method.
