  • Recently, social technologies have been created to solve problems from businesses for the establishment of generational solidarity ecosystem in terms of employment, residential space, network and social capital, age, cognitive and environmental aspects. This is senior-friendly healthcare business system aimed at meeting the senior needs for health life to enjoy active consumption culture life even after retirement, becoming a catalyst for minimizing generational conflicts, preventing the cognitive and physical deterioration of seniority in the areas of life healthcare, fitness and well-aging, and expanding into systems necessary for seniority self-reliance. We would like to draw up the development and requirements of the concept of the service platform for the study of collective characteristics for generation solidarity with senior class and the establishment of a customized senior health life system for generation solidarity. This system is characterized by a platform that can prevent the decline of seniors' cognitive and physical functions and enhance emotional stability. It is significant in providing feedback on the risk perception index, fall index, and prevention training index information to the child through the analysis and extraction of the senior health index for risk perception, fall probability, and fall prevention.

  • This study examined whether structural (coresidence, proximity) and associational (frequency of face-to-face contact, frequency of contact via phone, email or letter) solidarity between adult children and older parents may influence older parents' cognitive functioning. Adult children may help delay older parents' cognitive decline by promoting healthier lifestyle, engaging parents in complex everyday problem solving, and providing emotional support. The data consisted of men and women 65+ at Wave 1 who had at least one child 20+ and participated in at least two waves of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA, N=3,961). Cognitive functioning was measured with the Korean version of the Mini Mental State Examination. Fixed effects models were estimated using the xtreg procedure in STATA. Findings suggest that increases in proximity with at least one adult child may lead to enhanced cognitive functioning among older parents. Neither transitioning to coresidence with at least one adult child nor increases in frequency of contact with at least one non-resident adult child was associated with changes in older parents' cognitive functioning. With older parents' increasing preference for living close by, but not necessarily living with adult children, greater proximity may provide more opportunities for reciprocal support exchanges between the two generations, leading to better cognitive functioning of older parents.

  • This study investigates the predictors of the relationship quality between grandparents and grandchildren in emerging adulthood. Participants were 501 grandchildren with at least one living maternal/paternal grandparents. According to the t-test, the frequency of contact with maternal grandparents, the similarity of value to paternal grandparents, and the affective solidarity with paternal grandparents were significantly different depending on the grandchildren's sex. Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that the relationships of father-grandparents and mother-grandparents, the frequency of contact, and the similarities of value significantly predicted the affective solidarity between grandparents and grandchildren. However, the relative predictive power of these variables was different by the lineage and the grandchildren's sex.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of family-related factors and age-friendly environment on intergenerational interaction in middle-aged group and the older adult group. Based on the results, this study is to suggest countermeasures for decreasing intergenerational interaction with the population aging. This study analyzed 260 sample participants aged from 45 to 64 and 399 sample participants aged 64 and more, categorizing them into middle-aged group and the older adult group respectively. The sample participants were taken from '2014 Survey on the Aged Society' and had at least one adult child aged over 18 at the time of participation. In order to identify the relationship between five sub-dimensions related to family, age-friendly environment and intergenerational interaction within the family in two age groups, t-test and multiple regression analysis were used. As a result, both two family-related factors had positive correlation with intergenerational interaction within the family. However, affective solidarity showed a higher significance in the middle-aged group and familism showed a higher significance in the older adult group. Among the sub-dimensions related to age-friendly environment, only personal opinion on age integration showed significance in the older adult group. This study provides several implications from the results.

  • As Korean society enters an aged society, there is an increasing situation in which various generations coexist in the workplace. This study aimed to analyze corporate reverse mentoring in light of generational exchange. Through the case study methods using literature research and interviews, we categorized the objectives of starting reverse mentoring programs in domestic and foreign companies, and analyzed the possibility of generational exchange with the cases of company A in the US and B in Korea extracted by purposive sampling. Based on social exchange theory, organizational age theory, and generational solidarity theory, the analysis framework presented three propositions: 1) mutual benefit 2) balanced contribution, and 3) sustainability. As a result of the case analyses, there were three main objectives of introducing reverse mentoring: learning IT/social media, promoting corporate diversity, and understanding new trends in the younger generation. In the case of A company in the US and B company in Korea, there was a similarity in mutual benefit and balanced contribution. However, regarding sustainability, there was room for improvement in company B in Korea unlike company A in the US. We expect that reverse mentoring will provide important criteria for success in terms of generational exchange within organizations where various generations coexist in the future.
