  • To adequately analyze flows in pipe or duct network system, traditional node-based junction coupling methods require the junction loss which is specified by empirical or analytic correlations. In this paper, a new finite volume junction coupling method using a ghost junction cell is developed by considering the interchange of linear momentum as well as the important wall-effect at junction without requiring any correlation on the junction loss. Also, boundary treatment is modified to preserve the stagnation enthalpy across boundaries, such as pipe-end and the interface between junction and branch. Also, the computational accuracy and efficiency of the Godunov-type finite volume schemes are investigated by tracing the total mechanical energy of rapid transients due to sudden closure of valve at downstream end.

  • In order to elucidate thermal stability of Fe-$Fe_2Ti$ eutectic structure, the initial several structures have been investigated in the changes of coarsening and spheroidization during prolonged annealing under the eutectic temperature. The results are as follows: 1) The rate constant of coarsening and spheroidization was formulated as $S^{-n}-S_0^{-n}=k{\cdot}t$, where S is the total area of the interface between ${\alpha}$ and C($Fe_2Ti$) per unit volume, $S_0$ is initial value and k is the rate constant. 2) The coarsening and spheroidization mechanism was described by Ostwald ripening and controlled by diffusion of Ti-atom in ${\alpha}$-phase. 3) The spheroidization rate constant in eutectic lamellar structures was depended upon annealing temperature and showed the Arrhenius relation. The activation energy for spheroidization of lamellar structure was 365 kJ/mole.

  • In order to improve adhesive force of TiN film, we sputtered titanium as interlayer before TiN deposition by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition. We observed changes of hardness and adhesion at a various thickness of titanium interlayer and also examined analysis. At the critical thickness of the titanium interlayer(about $0.2{\mu}$), adhesive force of TiN films were promoted mostly. But over the critical thickness, a marked reduction of adhesive force was showed, because of the internal stress of titanium interlayer. From AES analysis, the adhesion improvement of TiN films was mainly caused by nitrogen diffusion into titanium interlayer during TiN deposition process which relieved stress concentration at TiN coating-substrate interface.

  • Surface modification of meta-aramid fibers was performed by phosphoric acid treatment. Surface morphology and element composition of untreated and treated fibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Effects of surface modification on the mechanical strength of aramid papers made from meta-aramid fibers and fibrid were investigated. Surface modification conditions were optimized by response surface analysis (RSA). Results show that phosphoric acid treatment increases the surface roughness and oxygen content of aramid fibers. They improve the interface bonding strength between aramid fibers and fibrid, which improves the tensile strength of aramid papers. The results of response surface analysis indicate that the tensile strength of aramid papers increases by 47.5% and reaches the maximum when meta-aramid fibers are treated with 21.1wt% phosphoric acid solution at $39.3^{\circ}C$ for 36.7 min.

  • Plastic/rubber blends are ultrasonically treated during continuous extrusion in order to investigate the in-situ compatibilization of the blends without any chemicals. The mechanical properties of each blend were significantly improved by ultrasonic treatment. It is believed that ultrasonic treatment of the blends enhances intermolecular interaction, improves adhesion at the interface and creates copolymers during very short time. The created copolymers are believed to be a major reason for enhancing mechanical properties of the blends by in-situ compatibilization during extrusion. This process can be applied fur preparing plastic/rubber blends to make thermoplastic elastomers or plastic/plastic and rubber/rubber blends, and for making novel copolymers from practically any pairs of existing polymers to achieve desirable chemical and physical properties.

  • With the contact angle of phase epoxy resin on the inorganic filler(glass plate) surface treated with air plasma, we have studied about the interface between epoxy resin and glass plate as simple model of a glass fiber reinforced composite materials. The contact angle on the inorganic filler surface varied with surface treatment conditions. The contact angle significantly depends on plasma treating time and environment temperature of the oven.

  • In order to determine what indluences the interfacial breakdown in EPDM/XLPE laminates. We studied the interfacial breakdown phenomena at several interfacial conditions. Breakdown strength in laminates pasted with silicone oil was higher than that with silicone grease. As a function of heat treatment time in a vacuum, interfacial breakdown strength increased much in XLPE/EPDM laminates pasted with silicone grease but increased a little in that with silcone oil. FT-IR spectrum of silicone oil was similar to that is silicone grease. FT-lR spectrum of silicone oil was not changed by the heat treatment in a vacuum, but in silicone grease another peak appeared.

  • We deposited Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films on Ru buffer layer in order to protect the amorphous layer between ZnO and Al interface. In X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, it was observed that increase of (002)-orientation by the variation of annealing treatment temperature. Also, surface roughness and specific resistance were increased by annealing treatment but full width at half maximum (FWHM) was decreased. In film bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs) fabricated from these results, we finally confirmed that the resonant frequency of 0.89 GHz without its shift was measured.

  • A statistical thermodynamical treatment for polymer adsorption from solution is presented. The canonical partition function for the polymer solution in the presence of a surface or an impermeable interface is formulated on the basis of usual quasi-crystalline lattice model, Bragg-Williams approximation of random mixing, and Pak's simple treatment of liquid. The present theory gives the surface excess ${\Gamma}_{exc}$ and the surface coverage ${\phi}^s_2$ of the polymer as a function of the chain length x, the Flory-Huggins parameter x, the adsorption energy parameter $x_s$, and polymer concentration $v_2$. Present theory is also applicable to the calculation of interfacial tension of polymer solution against water. For the idealized flexible polymer, interfacial tensions according to our theory fit good to the experimental data to the agreeable degrees.

  • ZTO/n-Si thin film is produced to investigate tunneling phenomena by interface characteristics by the depletion layer. For diversity of the depletion layer, the thin film of ZTO is heat treated after deposition, and the gpolarization is found to change depending on the heat treatment temperature and capacitance. The higher the heat treatment temperature is, the higher the capacitance is, because more charges are formed, the highest at $150^{\circ}C$. The capacitance decreases at $200^{\circ}C$ ZTO heat treated at $150^{\circ}C$ shows tunneling phenomena, with low non-resistance and reduced charge concentration. When the carrier concentration is low and the resistance is low, the depletion layer has an increased potential barrier, which results in a tunneling phenomenon, which results in an increase in current. However, the ZTO thin film with high charge or high resistance shows a Schottky junction feature. The reason for the great capacitance increase is the increased current due to tunneling in the depletion layer.
