This study analyzes the factors influencing interest on scientific subject and its change in Korean youth by using a sample from KEEP(Korea Education and Employment Panel 1-4) data. The results are as follows: First, the interest on scientific subject of Korean youth show quadratic curve. Also, the interrelationship between intercept and slope of subject interest is -.205 but it is not statistically significant Second, analysis of Latent Growth Models shows that self-esteem, academic achievement, school culture/climates and high school tracks are found to be a statistically significant factor on the intercept of subject interest These findings indicate that the interest on scientific subject of the Korean youth show a quadratic curve and various factors such as self-esteem, academic achievement and school culture/climates are much more influential on it.
Various data and methods are necessary to help students understand the science subject, and have interest in it. Most students like cartoons, and more easily memorize their contents. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of science cartoon reading on the academic achiements, the levels of interests in science and scientific attitudes of elementary students The study subjects were four classes of the 6th grade of G elementary school in U city. Two classes were experimental group and the others were comparison group. The students of the experimental classes were encouraged to read science cartoon related to class contents at the beginning and ending for 5 minutes respectively in instructional time. And those of the comparison classes received general science lesson. The results of this study were as follows. First, the experimental classes encouraged to read science cartoon marked higher average score than comparison classes in post-test and the difference was meaningful (p<.05). This meant science cartoon reading treatment had the effect of improvement of the levels of interest in science of student. Second, the experimental classes marked higher average score than comparison classes in post-test but didn't show meaningful difference. This meant science cartoon reading treatment didn't have the effect of improvement of academic achievement of students in our study. Third, the experimental classes marked higher average score than comparison classes in post-test and showed the meaningful difference(p<.05). This meant science cartoon reading treatment had the effect of improvement of scientific attitudes of students. From the results thus far, we could tell that science cartoon reading had positive effects on the levels of interest in science and scientific attitudes of students in our study.

According to trends in scientific technical competition, many countries around the world are interested in and focused on the STEAM integrated education. By observing the fact that the goal of our country's science education is to cultivate creative workers who have scientific knowledge, the need for STEAM integrated education cannot be denied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop the STEAM integrated program focused on themes that considered activities and interest in the grade 6 science subject in order to identify its influence on the creativity and interest levels of elementary students. The STEAM integrated education program in this study was developed so that it can be applied as a unit review or reinforcement activities in the closing activities per unit in grade 6. The focus was placed on heightening students' creativity and interest in science subject learning through a program focused on activities per theme. As a result of applying the developed STEAM integrated program in prior and post conditions on 3 elementary school's students in J Province, it was discovered that significant improvement was found in the creativity and scientific interest of elementary students in the experimental group, compared to the control group. Therefore, continuous and systematic development of the STEAM integrated education program is required, and moreover, it must be developed for all elementary grade levels and efforts should be put into actively applying the program in the field of education.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of elementary school teachers on the socio-scientific issues. Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident was used by concrete issue connected with SSI for this study. Participants in this study were twelve elementary school teachers studying at K University Graduate School of Education, located in the central region, who underwent a semi-structured interview. The study method was the phenomenological research method which is one of the qualitative research methods, and the interview papers had been examined by three scientific experts. As a result of the study, it was divided into twenty six themes, eight theme clusters, and two categories, and considered the thoughts on the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, its influence on Korea, the relationship between science and society as a result of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, interested in social issues related to science, application in class, response from students and the influence on students. Teachers had a general understanding of science-related social issues, but did not have much interest in the subject. However, they mentioned that to apply the issues in the curriculum would have a positive influence and encourage scientific motivation in students and, furthermore, helped them to develop the awareness of science in their surroundings. A greater interest in socio-scientific issues need to require from teachers and, through including these issues in the curriculum, we should have positive influence in developing science education.
Mathematics subject has been recognized as a subject in which we resolve some problematic situations through the logical and mathematical thinking according to mathematical concepts, principles, and rules. So we has focused on cultivating logical and mathematical thinking abilities when teaching and learning mathematics. However according to Bruner, we can use the narrative mode of thought which supplements the logical and scientific mode of thought when we think about logical and scientific matters, and we could make meanings by doing so. On the other hand, the Ministry of Education has announced recently that it would develope the textbooks of storytelling type of mathematics, and then many people have been interested in using stories in mathematics subject. The purposes of this article are to investigate the effects and the defects of using stories in mathematics subject, to probe the narrative characteristics of mathematics, and to inquire how using mathematics narrative can make students to make meaning about mathematics which compensates the defects of using stories in mathematics subject. And the main purpose is to inquire the implications of using mathematics narrative in teaching and learning mathematics.

This study aimed to observe trends in the literature on research, development, and innovation management in the energy sector, using performance assessment systems. The paper presented a bibliometric analysis of 40 studies on the subject. These materials come from ScienceDirect, Scopus and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) databases from 2006 to 2016. The results showed an increasing trend in the number of publications on the theme, showing the scientific community's interest in the subject. In addition, it was verified that the predominant language used to write the publications was English, the country that most published articles in the area was Brazil and most of the articles were produced through collaboration between researchers. It was found that the journal with the greatest number of publications on the subject was the Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, while the Expert Systems with Applications journal presented the article with the greatest number of citations. This analysis allowed us to identify important points of the research and its future directions, in addition to enabling a better understanding of the world trend of the subject approached.
This study aims to analyze the relationship between scientific content knowledge of science-gifted elementary students and their expression of scientific creativity, and the characteristics of divided groups according to the levels of their scientific content knowledge and scientific creativity. A science-gifted program was implemented to 33 forth-graders in the Science-Gifted Education Center of an education office in Seoul, Korea. The method of evaluating scientific knowledge was divided into well-structured paper-pencil test (asking specific and limited range of content knowledge of plants) and ill-structured descriptive test (stating all the knowledge they know about plants) to find out which methods were more related to scientific creativity. In addition, in order to find out the characteristics of each group according to the level of scientific content knowledge and scientific creativity, students were required to answer a questionnaire about their own self-perception of scientific knowledge and scientific creativity and how to obtain scientific knowledge. The main results of this study are as follows. First, Both well-structured paper-pencil test (r=.38) and ill-structured descriptive test (r=.51) results of elementary science gifted students were significantly correlated with scientific creativity. Second, As a result of the regression analysis on scientific creativity of science-gifted elementary students, both the knowledge measured by the two evaluation methods have the ability to explain scientific creativity. Third, the students were categorized into four groups according to the levels of their scientific content knowledge and their expression of scientific creativity, and the result showed that the higher the knowledge of science, the higher the scientific creativity. Fourth, the description about self-perception of scientific knowledge revealed that the highest percentage of Type LL students of all 13 students (53.8%, 7 students) answered 'I have little knowledge of plants because I have little interest in them.' Fifth, the description about self-perception of scientific knowledge revealed that the highest percentage of Type HH students of all 15 students (40%, 6 students) answered 'I think my science creativity is high through my experience of scientific creativity. Sixth, the responses to the Questionnaire revealed that 'reading' was the most popular way to obtain scientific knowledge, with 27 out of total 33 students choosing it. In particular, all 18 students from Type HH (high scientific knowledge and high scientific creativity) and Type HL (high scientific knowledge and low scientific creativity) - those with high scientific knowledge - gave that response. On the basis of this research, we should explore practical teaching methods and environment for gifted students to improve their scientific creativity by revealing the nature of the factors that affect scientific creativity and analyzing relationship between knowledge and scientific creativity.
Until recently, Pacific equatorial tropical island states were subject of only very limited interest by scientists, government officials, industry and policy makers of Korea. And, comprehensive information and data on these island regions is not very detailed to help better understand their social backgrounds as well as their natural environment. However, these island regions are now in the middle of diplomatic tug-of-war among super powers as well as becoming nucleus of various science-based ocean issues including marine biodiversity, shifting ecosystem, global environmental change including sea level rise and ocean acidification, fisheries, etc. Therefore, rising political and scientific importance of these areas call for better understanding of these regions, in social aspects as well as natural scientific knowledge of the region. To be provocatively prepared to more actively role in these regions, "A study on Establishing Research Infrastructures in the Tropical Pacific" has been supported during 2012-2013 as a mission-oriented in-house project of the KIOST. This project aims to provide various research infrastructure for Pacific island states, to reinforce cooperation with these nations, and to enhance Korea's national prestige. This special issue contains 10 research articles based on the studies conducted in 2012~2013.

As the public interest in environmental issues increased, the "Act On The Integrated Control Of Pollutant-Discharging Facility" was enacted. Through the integrated environmental pollution prevention act in which 19 industries with large environmental impacts are sequentially applied, pollutants can be managed in a medium-integrated manner and integrated permission of the business unit is possible and BAT can be applied to enable a scientific and proactive environmental management system. In order to facilitate the implementation of integrated environmental pollution prevention act with these advantages, the BAT BREF should be published, modified and revised every 5 years considering the level of scientific development. This study reviewed the issues to be considered in applying BAT and the types of BAT and focused on presenting improvements and development direction when revising and supplementing the standards in the future based on these contents. For this purpose, when revising the standards, it will be necessary to reflect on the domestic situation, to expand the TWG(Technical Working Group) of small-scale workplace experts, and to exchange opinions with business places that have similar processes for each waste type through a systematic total inspection. In addition to these methods, by establishing a resident participation system through information disclosure, it is expected to be used as a guideline for environmental management of business places not subject to integrated permission of less than 3 types as well as those subject to integrated permission.
By the influence of ageing population, the well-being trend, and the increase of interest in health, people seems to be enjoying sports and outdoor life more. Followed by the change of consumers' life style, the interest in smart clothing grafting scientific technology has increased, and research on this subject is necessary. This study is to develop improved design of band type heating vests by grasping the weak point of currently sold heating vest designed by the manufacturer. Through this process, satisfaction of the consumer and the manufacturer can be increased. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Conducted a demand survey with the manufacturer and wearing evaluation test with the consumer on band type heating vests. 2) Suggested design drafts on band type heating vests for both genders reflecting demand survey results. 3) Conducted consumers' preference survey for design drafts. 4) Made the sample product, and then conducted an evaluation of wearing the actual product. Overall, the wearing test results showed high satisfaction for both genders.
