  • To meet demand of big capacity and high speed rotation for washing machine, more stress from bending and twisting are complexly loaded onto the shaft supporting the horizontal drum, causing problems in fracture strength and fatigue life. Shafting system is mainly divided into flange and shaft. Shaft and flange connected by inserting shaft serration into flange on the process of die casting. When the system is operating, the gap is formed between serration and flange. But, Serration has various design factors and the optimal values can't be easily determined. Using a design of experiment (DOE) based on the FEM (Finite Element Method), this study was performed investigating the interaction effect between the various design factors as well as the main effect of the each design factor under bending, twist and vibration and proposed optimum design using box-behnken method among response surface derived from regression equation of simulation-based DOE.

  • The vibration response of the bridges under the moving vehicular load is of importance for engineers to estimate the serviceability of existing bridges and to design new bridges. This paper deals with the three dimensional vibration analysis of prestressed concrete bridges under moving vehicles. The prestressed bridges are modeled by four-node isoparametric flat shell elements with the transverse shearing deformation taken into account. The usual five degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) per node of the element are appended with a drilling DOF to accommodate the transformation of the local stiffness and mass matrices to the global coordinates. The vehicle is modeled as a single or two-DOF system. A single-span prestressed Tee beam and two-span prestressed box-girder bridge are studied as the two numerical examples. The effects of prestress forces on the natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the bridges are investigated.

  • The morphing flap wing has different structure unliked general wing structure. The actuated chord length of the morphing flap was more longer than conventional wing flap. In this reason, morphing flap wing structure was important to bending moment by aerodynamic lift force. In this study, through the fluid-structure interaction using computational fluid dynamics and structure finite element analysis to apply that the morphing flap wing's static aeroelastic stability analysis.

  • In ship structures, many parts are in contact with inner or outer fluid as stern, ballast and oil tanks. Fatigue damages can be sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance. Tank structures in ships are in contact with water and the vibration characteristics are strongly affected by the added mass of containing water. Therefore it is important to predict vibration characteristics of tank structures. In order to estimate the vibration characteristics, the fluid-structure interaction problem has to be solved precisely. In the present paper, we have developed a numerical tool of vibration analysis of 3-dimensional tank structures using finite elements for plates and boundary elements for water region. To verify the present analysis, we have made an experiment for vibration characteristics of a tank with elastic opposite panels. And the added mass effect of containing water and the effect of structural constraint between panels are investigated numerically and discussed.

  • Accurate and fast haptic simulations of deformable objects are desired in many applications such as medical virtual reality. In haptic interactions with a coarse model, the number of nodes near the haptic interaction region is too few to generate detailed deformation. Thus, local refinement techniques need to be developed. Many approaches have employed purely geometric subdivision schemes, but they are not proper in describing the deformation behavior of deformable objects. This paper presents a continuum mechanics-based finite element adaptive method to perform haptic interaction with a deformable object. This method superimposes a local fine mesh upon a global coarse model, which consists of the entire deformable object. The local mesh and the global mesh are coupled by the s-version finite element method (s-FEM), which is generally used to enhance accurate solutions near the target points even more. The s-FEM can demonstrate a reliable deformation to users in real-time.

  • The Rev binding to Rev Responsive Element (RRE) of HIV-1 mRNA plays an important role in the HIV-I viral replication cycle. The disruption of the Rev-RRE interaction has been studied extensively in order to develop a potential antiviral drug. In order to provide the basis for a more promising approach to develop a Rev-RRE binding inhibitor against HIV-I infection, it is necessary to understand the binding modes of the aminoglycoside antibiotics to RRE. In the present study, the binding mode of a modified antibiotic, a neamine conjugated with pyrene and arginine (NCPA), to RRE has been studied by the methods of $T_m$ measurement and spectroscopic analysis of RRE with or without antibiotics. The results confirmed that NCPA competes with Rev in binding to RRE.

  • A FE-BE procedure is presented for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams. In this technique, dam body is discretized by finite elements, while foundation rock is handled by three dimensional boundary element formulation. This would allow a rigorous inclusion of dam-foundation rock interaction, with no limitations imposed on geometry of canyon shape. Based on this method, a previously developed program is modified, and the response of Morrow Point arch dam is studied for various ratios of foundation rock to dam concrete elastic moduli under an empty reservoir condition. Furthermore, the effects of canyon shape on response of dam, is also discussed.

  • In order to investigate the vibration characteristics of fluid-structure interaction problem, we modeled two rectangular identical plates coupled with bounded fluid. The fixed boundary condition along the plate edges and an ideal fluid are assumed. MSC/NASTRAN was used to perform finite element analysis and analytic solutions were compared with experimental solutions to verify finite element model. As a result, comparison of FEM and experiment show good agreement, and the transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out of-phase, were observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system. The effect of distance between two rectangular plates on the fluid-coupled natural frequency is investigated.

  • This paper deals with the behavior of fresh concrete that is under vibration using mass-spring model (MSM). To this end, behaviors of two different full scale precast concrete molds were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Experiments were performed under vibration with the use of a computer-based data acquisition system. Transducers were used to measure time-dependent lateral displacements at some points on mold while mold is empty and full of fresh concrete. Analytical modeling of molds used in experiments were prepared by three dimensional finite element method (3D FEM) using software. Modeling of full mold, using MSM, was made to solve the problem of dynamic interaction between fresh concrete and mold. Numerical displacement histories obtained from time history analysis were compared with experimental results. The comparisons show that the measured and computed results are compatible.
