In this paper, we considered the design of gain scheduled controllers for linear systems with input constraints. The gain scheduled control is a method that uses larger control gain when the states are smaller, and smaller gain when it is larger. By doing this, we can use a full actuator capacity. Also we allow the over-saturation in control to improve the performance. First, we derive a control and a reachable set expressed as LMI form, while minimizing the $L_2$ gain from the disturbance to the measured output. Next, the reachable set is divided as nested subsets, and the control gains are obtained by minimizing the $L_2$ gain at each nested subset. Finally, the control gains are scheduled according to the status of states, i.e., the nested-subset in which the states are located. Performance of the proposed technique is illustrated through simulations of a six-story building subject to earthquake ground motion.
A time-optimal control law for quick, strongly nonlinear systems has been developed and demonstrated. This procedure involves the utilization of neural networks as state feedback controllers that learn the time-optimal control actions by means of an iterative minimization of both the final time and the final state error for the known and unknown systems with constrained inputs and/or states. The nature of neural networks as a parallel processor would circumvent the problem of "curse of dimensionality". The control law has been demonstrated for a velocity input type motor identified by a genetic algorithm called GENOCOP.

The dual-mode strategy has been adopted in many constrained MPC (Model Predictive Control) methods. The size of stabilizable regions of states of MPC methods depends on the size of underlying feasible and positively invariant sets and the number of control moves. The results, however, may perhaps be conservative because the definition of positive invariance does not allow temporal departure of states from the set. In this paper, a concept of periodic invariance is introduced in which states are allowed to leave a set temporarily but return into the set in finite time steps. The periodic invariance can be defined with respect to sets of different state feedback gains. These facts make it possible for the periodically invariant sets to be considerably larger than ordinary invariant sets. The periodic invariance can be defined for systems with polyhedral model uncertainties. We derive a MPC method based on these periodically invariant sets. Some numerical examples are given to show that the use of periodic invariance yields considerably larger stabilizable sets than the case of using ordinary invariance.
A stabilizing control method for linear systems with model uncertainties and hard input constraints is developed, which does not require on-line optimizations. This work is motivated by the constrained robust MPC(CRMPC) approach [3] which adopts the dual mode prediction strategy (i.e. free control moves and invariant set) and minimizes a worst case performance criterion. Based on the observation that, a feasible control sequence for a particular state can be found as a linear combination of feasible sequences for other states, we suggest a stabilizing control algorithm providing sub-optimal and feasible control sequences using pre-computed optimal sequences for some canonical states. The on-line computation of the proposed method reduces to simple matrix multiplication.
A receding horizon $H_{\infty}$ predictive control method is derived by solving a min-max problem in non-recursive forms. The min-max cost index is converted to a quadratic form which for systems with input saturation can be minimized using QP. Through the use of closed-loop prediction the prediction of states the use of closed-loop prediction the prediction of states in the presence of disturbances are made non-conservative and it become possible to get a tighter $H_{\infty}$ norm bound. Stability conditions and $H_{\infty}$ norm bounds on disturbance rejection are obtained in infinite horizon sence. Polyhedral types of feasible sets for sets and disturbances are adopted to deal with the input constraints. The weight selection procedures are given in terms of LMIs and the algorithm is formulated so that it can be solved via QP. This work is a modified version of an earlier work which was based on ellipsoidal type feasible sets[15].

In this paper, a new looper controller is proposed to minimize the tension variation of a strip in the hot strip finishing mill. The proposed control technology is based on a receding horizon control (RHC) to satisfy the constraints on the control input/state variables. The finite terminal weighting matrix is used instead of the terminal equality constraint. The closed loop stability of the RHC for the looper system is analyzed to guarantee the monotonicity of the optimal cost. Furthermore, the RHC is combined with a 4SID(Subspace-based State Space System Identification) model identifier to improve the robustness for the parameter variation and the disturbance of an actuator. As a result, it is shown through a computer simulation that the proposed control scheme satisfies the given constraints on the control inputs and states: roll speed, looper current, unit tension, and looper angle. The control scheme also diminishes the tension variation for the parameter variation and the disturbance as well.
The original RRT is iteratively expanded by applying control inputs that drive the system slightly toward randomly-selected states, as opposed to requiring point-to-point convergence, as in the probabilistic roadmap approach. It is generally known that the performance of RRTs can be improved depending on the selection of the metrics in choosing the nearest vertex and bias techniques in choosing random states. We designed a path planning algorithm based on the RRT method for a remote-controlled mobile robot. First, we considered a bias technique that is goal-biased Gaussian random distribution along the command directions. Secondly, we selected the metric based on a weighted Euclidean distance of random states and a weighted distance from the goal region. It can save the effort to explore the unnecessary regions and help the mobile robot to find a feasible trajectory as fast as possible. Finally, the constraints of the actuator should be considered to apply the algorithm to physical mobile robots, so we select control inputs distributed with commanded inputs and constrained by the maximum rate of input change instead of random inputs. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is significantly more efficient for planning than a basic RRT planner. It reduces the computational time needed to find a feasible trajectory and can be practically implemented in a remote-controlled mobile robot.
In experiment, a real inverted pendulum system has state constraints and limited amplitude of input. These problems make it difficult to design a swing-up controller. To overcome these problems, we design a sliding mode controller considering physical behaviour of the inverted pendulum system. This sliding mode controller uses a switching control action to converge along a specified path derived from energy equation from a state around the path to desired states(standing position). And optimal control method is used to guarantee stability at unstable equilibrium position. The designed controller can be applied to all inverted pendulum systems regardless of the values of their parameters. Compared with previous existing controllers, it is simple and easy to tune. Experimental results are given to show the effectiveness of this controller.

It is essential to carry out appropriate site investigations for the accurate prediction of the geo-structure. However, the importance of the site investigation is often overlooked due to the time and expense constraints. In this study, several cases of geotechnical design perfromed in United States are introduced with the lessons about how the site investigations are planned, performed and applied for the actual design parameter determination. Based on the case studies presented herein, experienced geotechnical engineer should participate in site investigations from the planning stage through the final boring logs and utilize all the laboratory and field tests to have consistent input parameters for the soil constitutive models. Furthermore, it is also desired to have close relationship between construction industry and the academia to compensate their needs.
