This paper presents the results of a structural analysis to determine design variables such as the inner basket array type, and thicknesses of the outer shell, and lid and bottom of a spent nuclear fuel disposal canister. The canister construction type introduced here is a solid structure with a cast iron insert and a corrosion resistant overpack, which is designed for the spent nuclear fuel disposal in a deep repository in the crystalline bedrock, entailing an evenly distributed load of hydrostatic pressure from the groundwater and high swelling pressure from the bentonite buffer. Hence, the canister must be designed to withstand these high pressure loads. Many design variables may affect the structural strength of the canister. In this study, among those variables, the array type of inner baskets and thicknesses of outer shell and lid and bottom are attempted to be determined through a linear structural analysis. Canister types studied hear are one for the pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel and another for the Canadian deuterium and uranium reactor (CANDU) fuel.
Solar array simulator (SAS) is essential equipment in testing and evaluating the power processing performance of a power conditioning system. However, the nonlinearity in the current(I)-voltage(V) characteristic makes the control loop design of SAS a challenging task. Conventionally, only the inner loop is usually considered in the control design approach. However, this study proves that the reference generation loop also interacts with the inner loop and plays a key role in the overall performance of the SAS. In this paper, the performance of voltage-mode control and impedance control, which are two of the most popular architectures for the SAS system, are reviewed and compared by multi-loop analysis.
The subject of this paper is the analysis of a Wire-TEM cell(W-TEM cell) which has an inner wire array rather than a metallic septum;its basic structure is similiar to a NBS TEM cell. To verify improved performances of this W-TEM cell as a standard EM field generator, well-known quasi-static approximations are employed and their resultant ingegral equations are numerically analyzed by moment method. Although the electric field strength of a W-TEM cell is 1.4 dB lower than tht of a NBS TEM cell, the uniformity of EM field patterns in a W-TEM cell is improved. It is also shown that the EM field distortions resulting from loading by the conditing objects under test(loading effects), are decreased considerably. This paper also deals with the investigations about relationship between the EM field distributions and the number of wire composing the inner conductor. Finally, the experimental analysis is performed on the practical model which is built on the basis of the design variables brought out by the theoretical andnumerical analysis.
This paper presents the results of a structural analysis to determine design variables such as the inner basket array type, and thicknesses of the outer shell and the lid and bottom of a spent nuclear fuel disposal canister. The canister construction type introduced here is a solid structure with a cast iron insert and a corrosion resistant overpack, which is designed for the spent nuclear fuel disposal in a deep repository in the crystalline bedrock, entailing an evenly distributed load of hydrostatic pressure from the groundwater and large swelling pressure from the bentonite buffer. Hence, the canister must be designed to withstand these large pressure loads. Many design variables may affect the structural strength of the canister. In this study, among those variables, the array type of inner baskets and thicknesses of outer shell and lid and bottom are attempted to be determined through a linear static structural analysis. Canister types studied here are one for the pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel and another for the Canadian deuterium and uranium reactor (CANDU) fuel.
There are a lot of manholes such as for water supply, sewage, telecommunication cable, traffic sign, electricity supply, and rainwater, etc. Conventional manholes installed on a road are impossible to adjust height, so that they should be entirely excavated to reinstall or repair. This entire excavation of a manhole causes too much time-consuming work, waste of resources, and obstruction of traffic. In this study, in order to solve the above mentioned problems, a cover, outer and inner parts of a manhole are integrated by gear-shaped parts located between outer and inner parts of a manhole. Mechanical design is performed to determine dimension of gear-shaped parts by Taguchi orthogonal array table. Cast molds for a gear-shaped manhole are also manufactured.
In this paper we examine the mass transport within the boundary layer near the sea bottom. The fluid domain is seperated into inner and outer region of boundary layers. In outer region, the wave field is assumed to be inviscid and irrotational. When the incident waves enter the arrays of circular cylinders, the scattering of water waves by an array of N bottom mounted vertical circular cylinders is solved using the method proposed by Linton & Evans under the potential theory. In inner region, the Navier-Stokes equation must be satisfied with boundary conditions at the boundary later and bottom is to be represented by the sum of the Eulerian mean drift and the Stokes' drift.
According to the wear detection history for the steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plant, the outer tubes inside the steam generator have more problems on the flow-induced vibration than inner tubes. Many researchers and engineers have used a specified added mass coefficient for a given tube array during the design stage of the steam generator even though the coefficient is not constant for entire tube in cylindrical shell. The aim of this study is to find out the distribution of added mass coefficients for each tube along the radial location. When numbers of tubes inside a cylindrical shell are increased, values of added mass coefficients are also increased. Added mass coefficients at outer tubes are less than those of inner tubes and they are decreased with increasing the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell. It also turns out when the gap between the outermost tube and the cylindrical shell approaches infinite value, the added mass coefficient converges to an asymptotic value of given tube array in a free fluid field.

We applied SP monitoring and resistivity surveys using the pole-pole electrode array to seawater leakage problems in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment to estimate and detect the zone of seawater leakage. The embankment is generally affected by tidal variation and has low resistivity characteristics due to the high saturation of seawater. For this reason, SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity surveys, which are relatively more effective to the conductive media, were carried out to delineate the leakage zones of sea water through the embankment. We checked out electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature variations along the inner part of Youngsan estuary dam to detect the zone of seawater leakage and found that the measured EC value agreed to that of seawater in the leakage zone and the temperature was lower than that of the vicinity of leakage zone. SP monitoring results were coincided with tidal variations at each embankment. At the leakage zones in the Youngsan estuary dam and the Eoeun embankment, SP anomalies are in the range of -60~-85 mV and -20~-50 mV, respectively, and true resistivity values obtained by 2-D inversion are 3~15 ohm-m and below 0.3 ohm-m, respectively. Both SP monitoring and the pole-pole array resistivity method are found to be quite effective for investigation of seawater leakage zones in the embankment.
In this paper, a systematical controller design method for a twostage grid-connected photovoltaic power conditioning system is proposed. For a pre-stage boost converter to achieve the stable operation in the entire region of solar array, the digital resistive current mode controller is used. This algorithm is very simple to implement with a digital controller and there is no power stage parameter dependency in the controller design. For a post-stage single-phase full-bridge inverter, a PI controller with a feedforward compensation for the inner current control is employed. Furthermore, in case that the operating point of the solar array under varying environmental conditions is higher than the required voltage for the inverter current control, the bypass mode for the boost converter is possible for the more efficient operation. The proposed control scheme is validated through the experiment of the prototype two-stage power conditioning system hardware with a 200W solar array.
