Two octagonal RC bridge columns of small scale model were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. One in two specimens was solid cross section, the other was hollow cross section. The volumetric ratio of transverse spiral hoop of all specimens is 0.00206. The columns showed flexure-shear failure. Failure behavior and seismic performance were investigated. The test results showed that the structural performance of the hollow specimen such as initial crack pattern, initial stiffness, and energy dissipation performance was comparable to that of the solid specimen, but the lateral strength, ultimate displacement, energy dissipation performance of hollow specimen noticeably decreased after drift ratio of 3%.

In seismic design, hollow section concrete columns offer advantages by reducing the weight and seismic mass compared to concrete section RC bridge columns. However, the flexure-shear behavior and spirals strain of hollow section concrete columns are not well-understood. Octagonal RC bridge columns of a small-scale model were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The volumetric ratio of the transverse spiral hoop of all specimens is 0.00206. The test results showed that the structural performance of the hollow specimen, such as the initial crack pattern, initial stiffness, and diagonal crack pattern, was comparable to that of the solid specimen. However, the lateral strength and ultimate displacement of the hollow specimen noticeably decreased after the drift ratio of 3%. The columns showed flexure-shear failure at the final stage. Analytical and experimental investigations are presented in this study to understand a correlation confinement steel ratio with neutral axis and a correlation between the strain of spirals and the shear resistance capacity of steel in hollow and solid section concrete columns. Furthermore, shear strength components (Vc, Vs·, Vp) and concrete stress were investigated.

The objectives of this study are to evaluate the reliability of an existing nonlinear analysis program for predicting the inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete frame with seismic details and to observe the redistribution of the internal forces, which can not be easily measured by an experiment. In order to carry out this task, the nonlinear analysis program of IDARC 2D(3) was run on a 2-bay, 2-story moment-resisting reinforced concrete plane frame with seismic details. (1) The effort to obtain the results of the analysis similar to those of experiment was made by determining the appropriate values of model parameters. The comparison of the analysis results with those of experiment and the observation of the distribution of internal forces obtained through nonlinear analysis points to the following conclusions. (1) The overall relationship between lateral load and lateral displacement given by the analysis is similar to that of experiment. However, the values of initial stiffness and the amount of energy dissipation in the initial displacement steps given by the analysis show larger values than those of experiment. (2) The analysis provided detailed information on the distribution and redistribution of internal forces and proved useful in elucidating the crack pattern, the sequence of the occurrence of plastic hinges, and the failure or yielding mechanism for the whole structure. (3) In spite of the similarity in overall behavior of analysis and experiment, there exists a significant discrepancy in some local behaviors. Furthermore, the hysteresis in the relationship between moment and curvature in some column ends have shown sudden deteriorations in strength, which can not be interpreted satisfactorily at the present time. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a better analytical model to fill this knowledge gap.
In case of skeletal Class III malocclusion with underdeveloped maxilla, the extraoral orthopedic force for the stimulation of maxillary growth or anterior reposition of the maxilla has been used clinically for the improvement of facial skeletal relationship. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the initial reaction of maxillofacial complex to the maxillary protraction by using extraoral orthopedic force. The dried human skull was used and this investigation was done by means of double exposure holographic interferometry. The protraction forces placed on the canine or the first molar were parallel, $10^{\circ}$ downward, $20^{\circ}$ downward to the occlusal plane. Fringe pattern of each protraction condition was compared and analized. The results were as follows: 1. Each maxillofacial bone displaced saparately. 2. More displacement was shown at the area of the teeth and the alveolar bone. 3. A counterclockwise rotation of the maxilla wa decreased by downward protraction and especially 20 degree downward protraction from the canine showed least rotation. 4. On the zygomatic arch, outward bend was observed and this effect was decreased by downward protraction. 5. On the zygomatic bone, the counter clockwise rotation was increased by the downward protraction. 6. When maxillary expansion was applied at the same time, outward and upward displacement with counterclockwise rotation was observed on the maxilla. 7. The lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid bone was affected by maxillary protraction.

In this paper, an automation model for drift design of high-rise buildings using resizing algorithms is proposed. Drift, in the model, includes the maximum lateral displacement at the top and inter-story drifts of a high-rise building subjected to both wind and seismic load. Resizing algorithms for high-rise buildings in various systems and material developed in previous researches are used as a drift control module. As an input to drift control algorithms, member forces for calculation of member displacement participation factors are obtained from commonly-used commercial softwares. The automation model is composed of 4 modules: initial modeling, drift control, stress check, and final verification modules. Each module in the model is described in detail in this paper.

An analysis program to predict the behavior of a concrete filled steel tube column (CFT) was developed. It considered confining effect, material nonlinearity, strain hardening of steel, and initial axial load. With the developed program, axial load-bending moment interaction analyses, moment-lateral displacement relation analyses, and lateral load-lateral displacement relation analyses were performed. For the verification of the developed program, analysis results were compared with the test results from the other researches. The verified results showed that the developed program predicted the behavior of the CFT column with agreeable accuracy. And they showed that it is necessary to consider the confining effect for the reasonable analysis of the CFT column. A simple parametric study was performed and it chose the strength of unconfined concrete and the thickness of a steel tube as the major parameters affecting the behavior of the CFT column. The parametric analysis results showed that the CFT column had higher strength and smaller ductility by increasing the strength of concrete. But the CFT column showed higher strength and larger ductility by increasing the thickness of the steel tube.
Many electric poles in the softground have been collapsed due to external load. In this study, 10 types of tests were performed with variation of location, numbers and depths of anchor blocks as well as depth of poles to find horizontal earth pressure through full scale pull-out tests. The horizontal earth pressure increased with embedded depth of electric pole, and earth pressure of lower passive zone decreased. The deeper of anchor block, earth pressure of passive zone becomes less. lateral displacements showed differences depending on location, numbers and depth of poles. The bending is generated in the upper part at the initial load, but it moved to central part as load increased. The maximum horizontal displacement decreased to 1/1.6 at -0.5m depth of anchor block and 1.3m additional laying depth of poles into ground.

An experiment was carried out to evaluate the lateral torsional stability of a girder with respect to the location and magnitude of prestressing force. The test of evaluating the lateral displacement and stability of a girder could cause an unexpected result due to various parameters, such as material nonlinearity, initial geometric imperfections, prestressing force, and loading and support conditions. Therefore, a small model testing was programmed to control the various parameters and assess the lateral torsional stability with respect to the prestressing force. This study proposed and fabricated an experimental apparatus that can satisfy the loading and in-plane and out-of-plane support conditions and also contol the prestressing force. The result of the experiment showed that the lateral torsional stability increased when the prestressing force was applied in the bottom flange of the girder. As a result, this study proposed an analytical equation that can account for the effect of the prestressing force in the lateral torsional stability of a girder.
Without output covariance estimation, one reference-based Stochastic Subspace Technique (SST) for extracting modal parameters and flutter derivatives of bridge deck is developed and programmed. Compared with the covariance-driven SST and the oscillation signals incurred by oncoming or signature turbulence that adopted by previous investigators, the newly-presented identification scheme is less time-consuming in computation and a more desired accuracy should be contributed to high-quality free oscillated signals excited by specific initial displacement. The reliability and identification precision of this technique are confirmed by a numerical example. For the 3-DOF sectional models of Sutong Bridge deck (streamlined) and Suramadu Bridge deck (bluff) in wind tunnel tests, with different wind velocities, the lateral bending, vertical bending, torsional frequencies and damping ratios as well as 18 flutter derivatives are extracted by using SST. The flutter derivatives of two kinds of typical decks are compared with the pseudo-steady theoretical values, and the performance of $H_1{^*}$, $H_3{^*}$, $A_1{^*}$, $A_3{^*}$ is very stable and well-matched with each other, respectively. The lateral direct flutter derivatives $P_5{^*}$, $P_6{^*}$ are comparatively more accurate than other relevant lateral components. Experimental procedure seems to be more critical than identification technique for refining the estimation precision.
For structures with underground basement walls, the soil-structure-interaction between the side soil and the walls affects the response of the system. There is interest in quantifying the relationship between the lateral earth pressure and the wall displacement using p-y curves. To date, passive p-y curves in available limited studies were assumed elastic-perfectly plastic. In reality, the relationship between earth pressure and wall displacement is complex. This paper focuses on studying the development of passive p-y curves behind rigid walls supporting granular soils. The study aims at identifying the different components of the passive p-y relationship and proposing a rigorous non-linear p-y model in place of simplified elastic-plastic models. The results of the study show that (1) the p-y relationship that models the stress-displacement response behind a rigid basement wall is highly non-linear, (2) passive p-y curves are affected by the height of the wall, relative density, and depth below the ground surface, and (3) passive p-y curves can be expressed using a truncated hyperbolic model that is defined by a limit state passive pressure that is determined using available logarithmic spiral methods and an initial slope that is expressed using a depth-dependent soil stiffness model.
