  • The purpose of this study was to analyze spatial composition of elderly skilled nursing facility and to provide basic information for setting up the detail facility architectural guidelines. The results of the study were following: the residential spaces of the facilities in this study were more or less overcrowded since their capacity were more than 5 elderly residents. The dimensions of some residential spaces did not even come up to the standard of elderly welfare law in force. On the other hand, the facilities had a tendency to use a space with multiple purposes or to allocate a space but to leave it with no use. Moreover comparing with the 1st floor, which was mainly for the staffs and had enough space to spare, the upper floor which was for the elderly residents, was crowded with nursing staffs and elderly residents and had densely closed residential and public spaces. For the problem solving, law and regulation modification is needed according to the case study about the usage and using frequency of each facility space. And the crowded area for the elderly residents could be enlarged through the reduction(or combination) of the rarely used spaces and moving a few residential spaces into the 1st floor.

  • A smart home system improves the elderly's quality of life by monitoring and analyzing their movements and health conditions with better health-care and social support services. Therefore, there has been an effort to adopt a smart home system for the independently living elderly. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the usability of a smart home system on actual independently living elderly housing in long-term settings. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate the usability of a smart home system on independently living elders in living lab conditions. The BLE smart band and the BLE receiver were chosen for the smart home system to monitor the movement of the participants in their homes as well as to monitor the heart rates, step counts, sleep index. Nine independent living elderly from the senior welfare center in Kimjae participated in this living lab demonstration experiment for ten months. This demonstration experiment confirmed the effectiveness of low-cost and easily adoptable IoT-based BLE sensor sets on independent living elders and discussed the troubles and limitations of the experiment. By grasping the pros and cons of IoT-based BLE sensor sets, this study seeks to improve the accessibility and usability of smart home systems for the elderly population in independent living arrangements.

  • This study aims to clarify how commissioned welfare volunteers could play a role of evacuation assistance for people with special needs in case of flood disaster which occurred in Sayo-cho, Hyogo prefecture by Typhoon 9th in August, 2009. Both questionnaire research and interview was conducted to commissioned welfare volunteers. As a result we found that the delay of official evacuation council caused some confusion. • This study is aimed to discover the deciding factors in senior employment programs for improving the quality of life for the elderly. The dependent variable used in this study was the quality of elderly persons. Personal and familial characteristics, and the community involvement of the elderly were used as independent variables in a Multiple Regression analysis. First, the most influential factor encouraging the elderly to participate in a senior employment promotion program was previous experience of senior employment programs. Second, health condition, residence in city areas, experience of volunteer work, and knowledge of senior employment programs had positive effects on the continuous participation of the elderly men and women. However, living arrangements had an effect solely on elderly men, and home ownership and participation in economic activities had effects solely on elderly women. Third, the life quality of the elderly was affected differently by sex. Health condition had the greatest effect on male elderly persons, whereas, the effective variable, the composition of the family had the most effect on female elderly persons. Thus, active campaigns through various mass media and information sessions are needed to promote participation in senior employment programs, according to the above mentioned deciding factors. In particular infrastructure providing the elderly with more volunteer work opportunity needs to be built for baby boomers to improve their quality of life. In addition, diversified senior employment programs are needed. Because the elderly living in city areas are more willing to participate in senior employment programs, specialized programs suitable for the elderly in city areas are needed. The government should also prepare programs that help the elderly stay healthy while they are working.
