  • Several families of infinite series were summed recently by means of certain operators of fractional calculus(that is, calculus of derivatives and integrals of any real or complex order). In the present sequel to this recent work, it is shown that much more general classes of infinite sums can be evaluated without using fractional calculus. Some other related results are also considered.

  • In this paper we prove the almost sure convergence of partial sums of identically distributed and negatively associated random variables with infinite expectations. Some results in Kruglov[Kruglov, V., 2008 Statist. Probab. Lett. 78(7) 890-895] are considered in the case of negatively associated random variables.

  • We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with critical frequency, (P𝜀) : 𝜀2∆v(x) - V(x)v(x) + |v(x)|p-1v(x) = 0, x ∈ ℝN, and v(x) → 0 as |x| → +∞, for the infinite case as described by Byeon and Wang. Critical means that 0 ≤ V ∈ C(ℝN) verifies Ƶ = {V = 0} ≠ ∅. Infinite means that Ƶ = {x0} and that, grossly speaking, the potential V decays at an exponential rate as x → x0. For the semiclassical limit, 𝜀 → 0, the infinite case has a characteristic limit problem, (Pinf) : ∆u(x)-P(x)u(x) + |u(x)|p-1u(x) = 0, x ∈ Ω, with u(x) = 0 as x ∈ Ω, where Ω ⊆ ℝN is a smooth bounded strictly star-shaped region related to the potential V. We prove the existence of an infinite number of solutions for both the original and the limit problem via a Ljusternik-Schnirelman scheme for even functionals. Fixed a topological level k we show that vk,𝜀, a solution of (P𝜀), subconverges, up to a scaling, to a corresponding solution of (Pinf ), and that vk,𝜀 exponentially decays out of Ω. Finally, uniform estimates on ∂Ω for scaled solutions of (P𝜀) are obtained.

  • Using regular finite elements and infinite elements simultaneously, elastic boundary value problems with infinite domain can be analyzed more effectively and accurately. In this paper, two dimensional infinite elements have been formulated by means of applying the derived mapping function to the coordinates and multiplying the regular displacement shape functions by a decay function. Orders(m, n) of the mapping and decay functions are found for the purpose of obtaining the convergent solutions without respect to the various decay lengthes. As a result of numerical tests for an infinite plate with a hole under internal pressure, two sets of function orders are obtained as follows. (a) n=0, m=1.5 (b) n=m=0.65

  • Quantization for probability distributions concerns the best approximation of a d-dimensional probability distribution P by a discrete probability with a given number n of supporting points. In this paper, we have considered a probability measure generated by an infinite iterated function system associated with a probability vector on ℝ. For such a probability measure P, an induction formula to determine the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization error for every natural number n is given. In addition, using the induction formula we give some results and observations about the optimal sets of n-means for all n ≥ 2.

  • Complex variable methods are used to solve the first and the second fundamental problems for infinite plate with two holes having arbitrary shapes which are conformally mapped on the domain outside of the unit circle by means of rational mapping function. Some applications are investigated and some special cases are derived.

  • Analysis problems of tunnels whose geometrical dimensions are very small compared with surrounding media can be treated as infinite region problems. In such cases, even if finite element models can be applied, excessive number of elements is required to obtain satisfactory accuracy. However, inaccurate results may be produced due to assumed artificial boundary conditions. To solve these problems, a hybrid model, which models the region of interest with finite elements and the surrounding infinite media with infinite elements, is introduced for the analysis of infinite region. Three-dimensional isoparametric infinite elements with various decay characteristics are formulated in this paper and the corresponding parameters are presented by means of parametric studies. Three-dimensional tunnel analysis performed on a representative example verifies the applicability of hybrid model using infinite elements.

  • Many different families of infinite series were recently observed to be summable in closed forms by means of certain operators of fractional calculus(that is, calculus of integrals and derivatives of any arbitrary real or complex order). In this sequel to some of these recent investigations, the authors present yet another instance of applications of certain fractional calculus operators. Alternative derivations without using these fractional calculus operators are shown to lead naturally a family of analogous infinite sums involving hypergeometric functions.

  • In this paper, we propose an extension of the classical Bessel function by means of our ℓ-hypergeometric function [2]. As the main results, the infinite order differential equation, the generating function relation, and contour integral representations including Schläfli's integral analogue are derived. With the aid of these, other results including some inequalities are also obtained. At the end, the graphs of these functions are plotted using the Maple software.
