Low pressure casting process for unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum (UD-CF/Al) composites which is an infiltration route of molten Al into porous UD-CF preform has been a cost-effective way to obtain metal matrix composites (MMCs) but, easy to cause non-uniform fiber distribution as CF clustering. Such clustered CFs have been a problem to decrease the density and thermal conductivity (TC) of composites, due to the existence of pores in the clustered area. To obtain high thermal performance composites for heat-sink application, the relationship between fiber distribution and porosity has to be clearly investigated. In this study, the CF distribution was evaluated with quantification approach by using two-dimensional spatial distribution method as local number 2-dimension (LN2D) analysis. Note that the CFs distribution in composites sensitively changed by sizes of Cu bridging particles between the CFs added in the UD-CF preform fabrication stage, and influenced on only $LN2D_{var}$ values.
Al6061 alloy reinforced with 15 volume% of Saffil fibers was fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. Uniform distribution of reinforcements and good bondings between reinforcements and matrix alloy were found in the microstructure of composites. Comparing with A16061 matrix alloy, tensile strength and elastic modulus of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al composites were increased up to 26% and 31%, respectively. Cyclic deformation and fatigue behavior of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al metal matrix composites were studied. The specimens were cycled using tension-tension(R=0.1) loading and under load controlled fatigue test. Cyclic stress-displacement curve through fatigue test was obtained. Fatigue strength of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al composites was about 200 MPa, i.e.0.55 of applied stress level(q). During fatigue test, $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/Al composites displayed cyclic hardening at all applied stress levels. The most of resultant displacement due to permanent plastic deformation occurred in less than the first 5% of fatigue life. Displacement-to-failure of the fatigue test was smaller than that of the tensile test because of accumulative damage by cumulative plastic deformation.
This study was conducted to investigate physical properties of soil and turfgrass wear characteristics within turfgrasses inside or outside the stadium A 1/1000 scale model Inchon world cup soccer d[me was constructed for this test. Turfgrasses planted inside and outside the model dome were; Kentucky bluegrass(KB), Kentucky bluegrass + perennial ryegrass mixture (KB+PR), Kentucky bluegrass + tall fescue + perennial ryegrass mixture (KB+TF+PR), Zoysia japonica 'Anyangjungzii'(ZA) and Zoysia japonica 'Zenith\`(ZZ). The rootzone was constructed by the multi-layer method (United States Golf Association method). Traffic on turfgrasses was treated with a 120kg roller. Surface soil hardness, soil penetration and water infiltration values on cool-season grasses(KB, KB+PR, KB+TF+PR) was found to be better for soccer play compared to zoysiagrasses(ZA, ZZ). No big differences in surface soil hardness, soil penetration and water infiltration values were found between inside and outside of the model dome. Wear damage on cool-season grasses caused by the traffic treatment was low compared to zoysiagrasses. However, there was no difference in wear damage by the traffic treatment within cool-season grasses while wear damage on ZA was higher than on ZZ within zoysiagrasses. It could be concluded that physical properties and wear characteristics on cool-season grasses were much better for soccer play than on zoysiagrasses.
Porcelain with high thermal shock resistance was successfully fabricated by a lithium solution infiltration method with a lithium hydroxide solution. Lithium hydroxide solutions having various lithium concentrations were infiltrated into pre-sintered porcelain bodies. The porcelain sample infiltrated by the 9 wt% lithium solution and heat treated at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 1 h showed a low thermal expansion coefficient of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ with excellent thermal shock resistance. The highly thermally resistant porcelain had a well-developed ${\beta}$-spodumene phase with the general phases observed in porcelain. Furthermore, the porcelain showed a denser structure of $2.41g/cm^3$ sintering density and excellent whiteness in comparison with commercial thermally resistible porcelains. The lithium hydroxide in the samples readily reacted with moisture, and liquid phase reactants were formed during the fabrication process. In the case of an excess amount of lithium in the sample body, the lithium reactants were forced to the surface and re-crystallized at the surface, leaving large pores beneath the surface. These phenomena resulted in an irregular structure in the surface area and led to cracking in samples subjected to a thermal shock test.
Chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence imaging was used to investigate the effectiveness of in vivo incorporation methods for two chemicals, 3-(3',4'-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) and methyl viologen (MV) in rice, a monocot, and cucumber, a dicot, leaves. four different methods (vacuum infiltration, floating, transpiration-aided incorporation through petiole and spraying) were compared, and $F_i$ and $F_v$/$F_m$ were chosen for the imaging of the DCMU- and MV-treated leaves, respectively. The effects of the chemicals in plants were generally heterogeneous over the whole leaf area. Moreover, the effectiveness of the treatment of a chemical in plant leaves was dependent on chemical species, plant species, concentration of the chemical, the treatment method, the duration of the treatment, the existence of light and detergent, etc. In conclusion, we suggest that to achieve the proposed effects of chemicals in plants for an actual experiment, these factors must be considered before the chemical treatment, and the best method for the treatment of the chemicals tested was floating and vacuum infiltration in the dicot and the monocot leaves, respectively, as drawn from Chl fluorescence imaging analysis.
We surveyed the antibody titers in the slaughtered pigs by enzyme immunodiffusion method for the epidemiological distribution of Aujeszky's disease in Korea. And also we observed the clinical symptoms, histopathological findings and antibody titers by serologic neutralization test in experimental animals infected with Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV) isolated from Korea. The results of the experiments were summarized as follows. 1. We detected 2 pigs infected with ADV of 1000 in 1990 and 1 of 600 in 1991 by enzyme immunodiffusion method. 2. In histopathological findings of experimental animals inoculated ADV, the typical characteristics of Aujeszky's disease were not observed in pig, but edema and degeneration in the epidermis were observed in rats, vasculoendotheriosis, perivascular cuffing and cellular infiltration in the cerebrum were appeared in rabbits and perivascular cuffing and forcal infiltration of glial cells in the cerebrum were appeared in mice. 3. The increasing antibody titers(1 : 64) in the serological neutralization test were ascertained in 2 carrier pigs inoculated ADV. 4. Rabbits, mice and rats died all about 5 days after inoculation, but pigs and chickens didn't die. 5. In 1 cat and 2 rabbits inoculated with the Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV), the typical clinical findings of Aujeszky's disease were observed in rabbit, but not in cat and so we slaughtered without any signs of Aujeszky's disease.
Plastic pipes Wrapped with synthetic filter are recently used for drainage or Collecting of Underground water. But it's use is possible only for small size of diameter less than 300mm, because large size plastic pipes are not readily availabe. For large diameter infiltration gallery, porous concrete pipes are now used, but it's heavy weight brings difficulties in making, moving and setting of the pipes. With it's conventional method of filter setting, fine sands are brought into the pipes to make trouble to lifting pumps and channels Therefore, initial construction cost and maintenance cost become high. To solve-this problem, new method is developed and tested. Small PVC pipes(diameter 14mm) are assembled at the site of construction to newly devised I beam type circls. The size of circular inpiltration gallery is optionally determined by I beam type circle which support small PVC pipes and is made of PVC amterial. This gallery are wrappd with syntheitc filter to prevent sand instruction. In this test, the diameter of 300, 400, 500mm were used. I beam type circles were made with PVC plated with thickness. t=6, 9, 12mm. Water quantity collected through the PVC circulor gallery are measured and the strengths of the gallery. 1. Allowable setting depth of gallery pipe below graund for the case of t=6mm, D=500mm is 2.72m. 2. Collected water quantity depends on soil texture, depth of water grandient of water surface, filter material angle of setting etc. 3. About 126% of water quantity collected from the one gallery pipe measured in two gallery pipes of two parallel installation.
The Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ SiC and Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) were fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. Uniform distribution of reinforcements were found in the microstructure of metal matrix composites. Mechanical tests were carried out under various test conditions to clearly identify mechanical behavior of MMCs, and the wear mechanism of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/(SiC or C) hybrid metal matrix composites were investigated. The tensile strength and hardness of hybrid composites was resulted in increasing compared with those of the unreinforced matrix alloy. Wear resistance was strongly dependent upon kinds of fiber, volume fraction and sliding speed. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites was remarkably improved by the addition of reinforcements. Especially, the wear resistance of the hybrid composites of carbon fibers was more effective than in the composites reinforced with alumina and SiC whiskers of reinforcements. This was due to the effect of carbon fiber on the solid lubrication. Wear mechanisms of hybrid composites were suggested from wear surface analyses. The major wear mechanism of hybrid composites was the abrasive wear at low to intermediate sliding speed, and the melting wear at intermediate to high sliding speed.
The operation performance of sewer rehabilitation projects conducted with Build-Transfer- Lease contract in Korea will be evaluated using the index of infiltration and inflow (I/I). Though I/I obtained at the fourth year should be initially evaluated based on the I/I values observed for the previous three years after the completion of sewer construction, the concrete methodology have not been proposed to rely on the so called 'performance evaluation committee'. This study suggests two statistical methodology to evaluate the I/I performance; the confidence interval method and the hypothesis-testing method. Assumed ten I/I values in each year for 20 years are used in this study. Two cases are analyzed and compared; case I to use as control data all I/I values for all years obtained before the evaluation year and case II to use I/I values for only 3 years before the evaluation year. As a result, case II tends to have relatively higher scores than case I, reflecting the low mean I/I values at the initial years.
Improvement of insulation performance of buildings is a major part. Adiabatic method The adiabatic method minimizes the heat loss of the building. External insulation uses insulation to prevent fire. Ambient air hazards are less prone to fire. When a fire occurs, a phenolic pattern is formed and bond strength with the wall increases. EPS insulation and phenol foam were used to compare external heat transfer and external heat transfer. The heat transfer properties of phenolic foam and styrofoam were evaluated as follows. In the mortar and styrofoam structure, the problem of styrofoam reaching the burning point occurred before the collapse of the mortar, and the phenol foam had a problem in that when the direct fire was continued on the phenol foam. The characteristics of continuous infiltration appeared. In the case of mortar and phenol foam + styrofoam, the heat penetrated into the interior due to the shrinkage due to the shrinkage of the carbon screen on the phenol foam. However, when reinforced with glass mesh on the outer surface, And to reduce infiltration.
