  • The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the technological changes on locational changes on the assumption that technological changes cover over all industrial sectors. The study is carred on 1) To investigate the theoretical backgrounds of the technological and locational changes and their problems. 2) To investigate the location and economic characteristics of the Korean textile industry. 3) To investigate the technological development and regional variations in technological level. 4) To the relationship of the technological change to the location of the textile industries. The locational change of the Korean textile industries have been closely related to economic characteristics. In the begining stage of development in the 1950's, thetextile industries were largely concentrated in the major cities(Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Masan et. al.). In the growing stage of development in the 1960's, the textile industries were relocated in suburban areas with the trend of large corporations building their branch plants of chemical fibers in the suburbs. With the expansion in the export industry in the 1970's, the textile companies were distributed throughout the whole country. But the research and development(R&D) activities caused the textile industries reconcentrate around Seoul and Pusan, owining to the change of the economic environments in the 1980's. The 1980's have witnessed the increased R&D investment for the development of better new and value-added products. This was because the technological level was much higher than that of Taegu and Other regions. What is more, plant birth location and branch plant location support that locational changes of textile industry were caused by technological changes. Plant birth location put stress technological environments of region, compared with branch plant locaiton. Accordingly, the technological changes of industry can be an important factor in locational changes. Through this study, it can be seen that locational changes come from technological changes. Other locational factors influence the industrial locations, but regional variations in technological level which has been relatively ignored has to be considered on the location study. Together with the accomplishments of existing location study, the study on technological change and location can better explain the location phenomena. And further research on technological change and location can provide better policy implications for regional development.

  • Coal briquette manufacturers once served as major fuel suppliers for households. For the coal briquette industry, transportation accounts for a considerable portion of the total manufacturing cost as briquettes are heavy in weight but low in value-addition. Moreover, they were put under strict control by the government for the characteristics of the briquettes as public goods. This study intends to identify the factors of and the types of the location of coal briquette manufacturing industry. In particular, the focus of the study is the briquette manufacturers in Seoul. Moreover, this study aims to identify how government policy influenced the location of the industry. The coal briquette manufacturing industry in the example regions were oriented toward the market and trans-shipment points. Simultaneously, the industry underwent spatial changes due to the spatial policy. While derived spatial policies were significant factors for growth of coal briquette industry, explicit spatial policies only modified or facilitated some of the location features resulting from the characteristics of the industry.

  • Purpose - The logistics industry is often featured by its location relevance and industrial concentration. Industrial concentration is conducive to the effective transmission of information by reducing transaction costs and improving transaction efficiency, thus promoting the development of trade. The main purpose of this paper is to measure the spatial total factor productivity and location quotient of the logistics industry in Korea, and to study the impact of the logistics industry efficiency and agglomeration effect on import and export trade in Korea. Design/methodology - First, used the spatial stochastic frontier method to measure the spatial total factor productivity of the logistics industry in Korea, this serves as the efficiency index of the logistics industry in various regions of Korea. Second, calculated the location quotient (LQ) of the logistics industry to measure the industry's concentration degree. Third, employed a spatial econometric model to analyze the impacts of factors such as the efficiency and concentration levels of the logistics industry on import and export trade in Korea. Findings - This study's main findings can be summarized as follows: this study found that the overall efficiency of the logistics industry in Korea needs to be improved, even though it showed an upward trend in all regions of the country; Moreover, the agglomeration level of Korea's logistics industry needs to be improved; Finally, the positive spatial correlation and industrial agglomeration effect of Korea's logistics industry had a positive impact on the country's import and export trade. Originality/value - This study is innovative in terms of research perspective and methods. Most of the previous studies have measured the development level of the logistics industry using the logistics performance index (LPI), Fewer studies have assessed through the spatial total factor productivity and location quotient of the logistics industry in Korea to measure the efficiency index of the logistics industry in various regions of Korea and concentration degree, as well as there was almost no study on the impact of logistics industry efficiency and agglomeration effect on import and export trade in Korea. This study addresses this limitation by analyzing the impacts of the efficiency and agglomeration effect of the logistics industry on import and export trade in Korea.

  • As technologies have been more quickly developed in this 4th Industry Revolution era, their application to defense industry has been also growing. With these much advanced technologies, we attempt to use Manned-Unmanned Teaming systems in various military operations. In this study, we consider the Location-Routing Problem for reconnaissance surveillance missions of the maritime manned-unmanned surface vehicles. As a solution technique, the two-phase method is presented. In the first location phase, the p-median problem is solved to determine which nodes are used as the seeds for the manned vehicles using Lagrangian relaxation with the subgradient method. In the second routing phase, using the results obtained from the location phase, the Vehicle Routing Problems are solved to determine the search routes of the unmanned vehicles by applying the Location Based Heuristic. For three network data sets, computational experiments are conducted to show the performance of the proposed two-phase method.

  • The shipbuilding and offshore industry is a large and complex assembly industry, which causes many safety accidents. The major accidents in the shipbuilding and offshore industry workplaces are stenosis, falling objects, dust, fire, explosions, and gas poisoning. The accident by worker in this industry mainly has three factors: frequent movement, narrow work space, and increased use of subcontractors. To control these factors, it is necessary to monitor the worker's location and work status. In this paper, a worker location monitoring system using inaudible sound wave was designd that can be used in environments with many metal barriers. The process included deriving stakeholder requirements, transforming to system requirements, designing system architecture, and developing prototype. The prototype was validated by third-party testing agency. As a result, it satisfied the designed performance and verified its feasibility.

  • The locational characteristics of ceramic industry in Miryang city, Kyongnam province, were clarified by means of examining the process of its formation, spatial variation, locations and their changes. The government policy on industry and the business fluctuation are important in the quantitative changes of the industry. The spatial variation of industry toward the outer part of area are the results of equilibrium between the decrease of firms in inner city and the increase of firms in outer part. The births and deaths of firms played important role in the processes of spatial variations. The industry location has lasted by the accumulation of location decision of 'potential entrepreneurs' who learned knowledges on the industry and had personal contacts with the business-related persons for long time. The main factors on the locational decision of firms are personal factor, raw materials, land, water and market. The locational problems have mainly related with plant expansion, land, marketing, labour and capital. They caused investment changes and caused relocations of firms. Such disadvantages as raw material exhaustion, shortage of land and congestion within the agglomeration area, development of road transportation and local government policy on industry location, induced recent decentralization of industry to outer part.

  • The objective of this article is finding optimized locations of active mounts applied to 6-DOF beam structure with two active paths. When sinusoidal excitation forces are applied to the beam structure, secondary forces from two active mounts which can minimize (ideally becoming zero) transmitted forces are calculated mathematically and the vibration attenuation performance is validated through computer simulations. When the force applied to two active mounts are relatively low, those specific locations are considered as optimized location of active mounting system. As the location of mount changes, amplitude and phase of secondary forces in each path are analyzed with 3D plots. Based on the simulation results, a criterion for selecting mounting location is suggested and it would be very useful for selecting actuators for active mounts appropriately.
