Does Specialization Matter for Trade Imbalance at Industry Level?

  • This paper investigates the source of bilateral trade imbalance at industry level. We build a simple model based on gravity theory and derive the prediction that the bilateral trade balance in an industry is increasing in the difference between trading partners in the output share of the industry. We test this prediction and find that the difference in industry share is highly significant in predicting both the sign and the magnitude of trade balance at industry level. We also find that FTAs tend to enlarge trade imbalance at industry level. However, the overall predictive power of the model is rather limited, suggesting that factors other than production specialization are important in determining trade balance at industry level. Another finding of the paper is that the influence of the difference in industry share on trade balance increases as we move to industries that produce more homogeneous products. This finding calls into question monopolistic competition as the main driver of gravity in international trade.

  • Objectives : Because people have increasingly more interest in their quality of life, the anti-aging industry has grown worldwide. The purpose of this study is to suggest strategies for galvanizing the anti-aging industry in Korea. Methods : To accomplish this aim, we explored the definition, classification, problem and activating strategies of the anti-aging industry through a systematic review. Results : From the results, the following suggestions are given: planning a national strategy to galvanize the anti-aging industry, establishing an anti-aging research institute, developing a business model, developing an anti-aging cluster, statistics development and an information system related to anti-aging, training personnel, and legislation. Conclusions : The anti-aging industry has the potential to reduce health expenses through early intervention of diseases due to aging and through activation of the national economy by win-win growth of the industry related to aging. Therefore, understanding the anti-aging industry as well as political support is critical.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze entrepreneurship and to find out the impact of CEOs in the restaurant industry on corporate performance when they have entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs need entrepreneurship to take risks and jump into the market to generate profits. Entrepreneurship is not limited to the abilities or resources held, but it is not limited to the ability or resources held, and entrepreneurship to act means the spirit to take uncertainty and preempt opportunities through innovative activities [1]. In this study, the CEO's entrepreneurship was set as an independent variable and corporate performance as a dependent variable. By applying and analyzing how the CEO's entrepreneurship affects corporate performance in the restaurant industry, the importance of entrepreneurship in the restaurant industry and the impact relationship on corporate performance are analyzed. To this end, 100 CEOs working in the restaurant industry will be surveyed using the Likert 5-point scale[2]. And an empirical analysis will be conducted through the SPSS program[3]. Entrepreneurship is a spirit that can take risks and seize opportunities through bold challenges to generate profits. Therefore, it has been confirmed that it affects corporate performance as a key factor for improving corporate performance, and from related studies, the entrepreneurship of the CEO of the restaurant industry is expected to have a positive (+) effect on corporate performance.

Inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress in high-fat-diet-induced obese C57BL/6 mice: Efficacy of a novel extract from mulberry (Morus alba) leaves fermented with Cordyceps militaris

  • A few clues about correlation between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and mulberry (Morus alba) leaves were investigated in only the experimental autoimmune myocarditis and streptozotocin-induced diabetes. To investigate whether a novel extract of mulberry leaves fermented with Cordyceps militaris (EMfC) could suppress ER in fatty liver, alterations in the key parameters for ER stress response were measured in high fat diet (HFD)-induced obese C57L/6 mice treated with EMfC for 12 weeks. The area of adipocytes in the liver section were significantly decreased in the HFD+EMfC treated group as compared to the HFD+Vehicle treated group, while their level was higher in HFD+Vehicle treated group than No treated group. The level of the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha ($eIF2{\alpha}$) and inositol-requiring enzyme 1 beta ($IRE1{\alpha}$) phosphorylation and CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP) expression were remarkably enhanced in the HFD+Vehicle treated group. However, their levels were restored in the HFD+EMfC treated group, although some differences were detected in the decrease rate. Similar recovery was observed on the ER stress-induced apoptosis. The level of Caspase-3, Bcl-2 and Bax were decreased in the HFD+EMfC and HFD+orlistat (OT) treated group compared to the HFD+Vehicle treated group. The results of the present study therefore provide first evidence that EMfC with the anti-obesity effects can be suppressed ER stress and ER stress-induced apoptosis in the hepatic steatosis of HFD-induced obesity model.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to develop the radiographic technique for detecting the demineralization which is known as indication of dental caries. Materials and Methods: This technique was based on the comparing of multiple radiographs which was irradiated by multiple X-ray spectra. For the meaningful comparing, the multiple radiographs were reconstructed to the dosimetrically consistent images using a standard material. The difference of resulting images of same target with multiple spectra represents the difference of response of material as regards the spectra. Results : We have found about 10% of demineralization of dental hard tissues particularly in the proximal region through the analyzing of differences. Conclusion: Most intriguing thing in this investigation was that the method to analyze difference shows us to an anatomic structure of dental hard tissues even if absolute values of optical density were excluded during the procedures. Analysis of Regulation Standard and Radiological Characteristics of NORM Industry (국내·외 NORM 취급 산업 규제 기준 및 방사선학적 특성 분석)

  • International organizations such as IAEA and EC recommend graded approach by identifying NORM industries requiring radiation protection. In Korea, single regulation rather than graded regulation for NORM industry is applied. Therefore, it consumes more manpower and costs than necessary for both regulators and workers, and is not optimized. The purpose of this study is to analyze domestic and foreign NORM industry regulatory standards and radiological characteristics for graded approach of NORM industry in Korea. Safety reports and publications such as SRS 49 and ICRP 142 published by international organizations were investigated, and domestic and foreign NORM regulatory guidelines and legislation such as Health Canada and the Act on Protective Action Guidelines Against Radiation in the Natural Environment were investigated to indicate NORM industries and regulatory standards. The radioactivity concentration of raw materials or by-products, radiation dose by industrial process of the NORM industry identified in IAEA and Korea were investigated. Nine NORM industries in Korea were identified based on the NORM industry from IAEA and KINS survey report. Foreign countries such as Canada, UK and Denmark were executing graded approach such as classification of dose level or licensing, registration, notification based on safety assessment. Radioactivity concentration of domestic and foreign NORM industries were widespread up to 200 Bq g-1 or higher based on industrial process and work type, and numerous NORM industries that exceeded radiation dose of 1 mSv y-1 were indicated. Therefore, it is necessary to consider handling materials and work types of identified NORM industry when establishing graded approach for NORM industry in Korea considering domestic situation. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for developing methodology of graded approach for NORM industry in Korea.

  • Objective: The aim of this paper is to introduce the roles of H&S(Health and Safety) department and its future directions in the shipbuilding industry. Background: It is necessary to improve the level and quality of Safety & Health department. Method: Various documents and performances involving a shipbuilding company have been reviewed to describe the job of the Safety & Health department. Results: The role of the Safety & Health department has increased and developed in recent domestic industry. Conclusion: The status of the Safety & Health department should be improved by introducing of new systems and skills. Application: These results can be used to provide information for establishing a more effective safety and health organization.

  • Incheon port is located near the Seoul metropolitan area and it is gateway port to Korea. It has the efficient location conditions in geography and economics. Many logistics industry had been developed taking the advantage of above conditions. Since Incheon International Airport opened in 2001, the function in logistics had been grown gradually. But most of logistics companies in Incheon are lack of basic usage of logistic information. To identify the status for logistic industry in Incheon we analysed various statistical data and literature in this study. From the survey results, we found that logistic industry has higher weight than other industries. It is sure that logistics industry is the specific industry in Incheon.

  • The purpose of this study is to reinforce employment improvement of engineering college students and the industry-university collaboration of regional industries. In order to achieve the object of this study, we inquire and analyze the general requirements for engineering college students and specific requirements for each major of engineering college. In addition, we survey and analyze the industry-university collaboration programs and awareness of them. When regional companies hire new workers affiliated engineering students, they significantly consider executive ability related to their majors and self-confidence. The education and research area by each department and the status and the intention of industry-university cooperation are also investigated. Eventually, we propose the education plan to meet the industrial requirements and industry-university cooperation strategy.

The Relationship between Industrial Classification and Chronic Disease (산업분류와 만성질환 유무와의 관계)

  • Purposes: The industry has specialized and fragmented than in the past. As a factor of economic growth and industrialization, the number of people employed in primary industry decreased and the number of people employed in secondary and third industry continuously increased. In modern times, incidence of chronic disease is increasing according to industrial development. So, the purpose of this study was to analyze the chronic disease according to Clark's industrial classification. Methodology: Data were derived from the 2012 Korea Health Panel. The sample was made up of 7,132 adult participants aged 20 or over selected Korea Health Panel by probability sampling from Korea. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the main factors associated with chronic disease. Findings: The significant factors associated with chronic disease were gender, age, marital status, household member, education level, insurance type, disability, BMI, and industrial classification. Female, elderly, divorced(including bereavement, missing and separation), one-person households, less than high school graduation, medical aid, disability, obese and primary industry were confirmed chronic disease increases. Practical Implications: The study finds that primary industry's prevalence of chronic disease was higher than secondary and third industry. Therefore, this study aims to management and effort of the worker who engaged in the primary industry. Policy development is required to address inequality or popularization of the differences in these factors by conducting a study to define the working conditions and socio-economic factors between industry.
