The cause of Scond Harmonic Generation (SHG) in thermally poled silica glass is suggested basedon the electrical and dielectric relaxation measurements. The absorption currents as functions of time were measured for various types of silica glasses and analyzed by the theory of Space Charge Polarization. Space charge polarization occurs when an ionic conducting material is subjected to dc electric field with blocking electrode. Thermal poling performed to induce SHG in silica glass is basically identical to the process generating space charge polarization. Hence it was found that gene-ration removal reproduction and temperature dependence of SHG in poled silica is directly related to those of space charge polarization. It turned out that the fundamental parameters governing the SHG in poled silica are charge carrier concentration and mobility. Based on the theory of space charge polarization and experimental results of electrical rela-xation the method to increase the intensity of SHG is proposed.

Analyzing and monitoring environmental contaminants based on geophysical exploration techniques have become important and it is now widely applied to delineate spatial distribution geophysical characteristics in wide area. Among the techniques, induced polarization (IP) method, which measures polarization effects on electrical potential distribution, has drawn much attention as an effective tool for environmental monitoring since IP is sensitive to changes in biochemical reactions. However, various reactions stemming from the presence of multiple contaminants have greatly enhanced heterogeneity of polluted sites to result in highly variable electrical characteristics of the site. Those contaminants influence chemical and physical state of soil and groundwater to alter electrical double layer, which in turn influences polarization of the media. Since biochemical reactions between microbes and contaminants result in various IP effects, IP laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate IP responses of the contaminated soil samples under various conditions. Field IP surveys can delineate the spatial distribution of contamination, while providing additional information about electrical properties of a target medium, together with DC resistivity. Reviewing IP effects of contaminants as well as IP surveys can serve as a good starting point for the application of IP survey in site assessment for environmental remediation.
In microband-induced fiber gratings, polarization properties and birefringence are investigated as a function of an applied line force. With the transmission curves associated with the maximum and minimum resonant wavelengths, the polarization-dependent behaviors are analyzed. By increasing the transverse line force, the resonance wavelength for an incident light polarized to the same direction of the force is blue-shifted as much as 0.69 nm/(N/cm) while that for the other polarization is insensitive. Using the resonant wavelength separation corresponding to the force variation, the transverse effective index change or modal birefringence variation is obtained. The ratio of modal birefringence versus applied line force is ${\Delta}B/{\Delta}f_x={\sim}8.38{\times}10^{-7}$.

Most parts of facilities in domestic petroleum plants and power plants are needed to be abandoned, repaired or replaced, because in Korea they were built in the 1960s and, they have been used under severe conditions and exposed corrosive environments. 2.25Cr- lMo steels have excellent high-temperature mechanical properties. Therefore, the material have been widely used as heat exchanger tubes, boiler headers and its tubes in such industries. But, those microstructural evolutions in high temperature such as precipitation and carbide coarsening give a reason to degrade the material. Especially, in case of this material, carbides induced embrittlement(CIE) is the primary reason for degrading mechanical properties at over 50$0^{\circ}C$. In this paper, we introduce a electrochemical polarization method for detecting CIE quantitatively.
Electrically-induced strain(S) and polarization(P) for Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O3-PbTiO3(1-x)PSN-xPT) crystalline solutions were studied. From the compositional dependence of S and P we could observe two maximum values at x=0.10 and x=0.425. It is considered that PSNT10(x=0.10) composition is the structural phase boundary to indicate the variable order-disorder[VOD] region. PSNT(x=0.425) composition is the morphotropic phase boundary[MPB] to indicate the rhombohedral to tetragonal phase transition. Higher S (0.437%) and P (0.3974$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$) values were attained by the La substitution (5 wt%) at Pb site in the MPB composition of 57.5PSN-42.5PT.
Frequency-domain and time-domain induced polarization methods can provide spectral information about subsurface media. Analysis of spectral characteristics has been studied mainly in the frequency-domain, however, time-domain induced polarization research has recently become popular. In this study, assuming a homogeneous half-space model, an inversion method was developed to extract Cole-Cole parameters from the measured secondary potential or electrical resistivity. Since the Cole-Cole parameters of chargeability, time constant, and frequency index are not independent of each other, various problems, such as slow convergence rate, initial model problem, local minimum problem, and divergence, frequently occur when conventional nonlinear inversion is applied. In this study, we developed an effective inversion method using the initial model close to the true model by introducing a grid search method. Finally, the validity of the developed inversion method was verified using inversion experiments.
In this paper, a general performance of the PSS-LCD or Polarization Shielded Smectic Liquid Crystal Display is discussed. This smectic base LCD does not use any spontaneous polarization, but uses induced polarization just same with current nematic base LCDs. Specific initial molecular alignment as well as specific cell design realizes extremely fast optical response speed with native wide viewing angle. Moreover, this performance is provided by full compatible electronics for current conventional LCDs. A general performance of the PSS-LCD is introduced here.
We investigated how the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance was degraded by semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-induced chirp for the 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ), duobinary NRZ, return-to-zero (RZ), and carrier-suppressed RZ (CS-RZ) modulation formats. The power penalty was calculated as a measure of the system performance due to PMD for a given SOA-induced chirp. Considering only first-order PMD, all modulation formats have a similar PMD tolerance regardless of SOA-induced chirp. On the other hand, when both first- and second-order PMD are considered, the PMD tolerance of all modulation formats with the exception of the CS-RZ modulation format are degraded by SOA-induced chirp. Among all modulation formats considered here, the NRZ modulation format has the PMD tolerance with the highest sensitivity to SOA-induced chirp. When the peak-to-peak chirp induced by SOAs is $0.28{\AA}$, its PMD tolerance is degraded up to 4 dB for a differential group delay (DGD) of 50 ps. However, the PMD tolerance of the CS-RZ modulation format is largely unaffected by SOA-induced chirp.
A new hybrid, heterodyne, fiber-optic electric field sensor scheme is presented. In this scheme, a dual polarization, dual frequency, stabilized He-Ne laser is used for the light source of the interferometer, Probe beam is delivered to the sensor head using polarization maintaining fiber. In the sensor head, $LiTaO_3$ electro-optic crystal is used for sensing element. Phase retardation is induced on the dual frquency, dual polarization probe beam due to applied electric field across the crystal. Induced phase retardation is demodulated by in-phase and quadrature demodulation technique. In this way, we can obtain optimum sensitivity for electric field measurement regardless a quasi-static phase difference between two polarization components.
Abstract Electrorheological effect on the dispersive system of polarizable fine powder/dielectric oil has been investigated. ER effect was explained divided into following 3 mechanisms; (1) surface conductance, (2) bulk conductance, and (3) induced polarization. Mathematical model which predicts the interactive force between two fine particles in the electrorheological fluid has been introduced based on the induced polarization mechanism. This model may provide guide to select materials for strong ER effect. The attractive force between two particles was calculated using the above model for the selected 7 materials such as ceramics, ferrites, polymers etc. From the calculation result, it was found that the ceramics and ferrites are good materials which show a strong ER effect.
