  • The initial condition of $\Delta \sigma_3 \;=\; \Delta u$ is used for analyzing the time dependent behavior of ground. This is based on the concept that the coefficient of pore water B is the unity on the condition of saturation. but some measured consolidation data in the field showed that the pore water pressure was not dissipated as time elapsed but it was maintained constant value or it's dissipation rate was slower than that of the predicted. and so the measured data of pore water pressure was not consistent with that of settlement. In this study, the rheological model for the pore water pressure behavior on undrained condition was induced and compared with the experiment data of the literature. The result showed that the suggested model was consistent well with the result of experiment, but the suggested model could not explain the effect of the decrease of void ratio according to consolidation.

  • Noise and vibration induced by subway operation is one of the major problem for the residents living nearby railway tracks. Many scientists and engineers have been working on proposing the more accurate prediction equation of noise and vibration to provide the better residential environment. Some predictiction equations were determined to compare the measurement value of a noise obtained from the inside of a residential area. It was observed that the condition of a soil type is one of the major parameter which should be considered to obtain the more accurate prediction value of a noise.

  • The interface between low carbon steel and blended cement pastes containing slag was investigated using impedance spectroscopy. In addition, the pastes were characterized by several analytical methods (XRD, EDX, electrode potential, pH and ICP). The electrical behavior of the interface in the blended slag systems is correlated to its corresponding pore solution chemistry and the products present in the interface. Passivation occurred at the paste/steel interfaces, in cement pastes up to containing from 0 to 75% slag content. 100% slag paste induced corrosion of the low carbon steel, which could be explained by the influence of sulfur on the system.

  • Soil contaminants are common in industrialized sites, They can affect directly soil and indirectly ground water and food. Soil mutagens and carcinogens are of great interest due to their potentially hazardous effects on human health. The aim of this study was to monitor the genotoxicity of contaminated soils, Soil leachates were collected from two polluted sites and one control site in Cheongju. Tradescantia BNL 4430 clone was used as experimental matierials. Chromosomal damages induced by soil leachates were detected by the Tradescantia-micronucleus assay. It is known from the result that Tradescantia-micronucleus assay is an excellent botanical tool for detection of biological risk due to environmental toxicants.

  • Graphene nanoribbons with zigzag-shaped edge (zGNRs) are predicted to be magnetic insulator at the ground state, attracting significant interest in view of spintronic applications [1]. On the other hand, although they are energetically and thermodynamically more favored than zGNRs [2], graphene nanoribbons with armchair-shaped edge (aGNRs) have been less spotlighted than zGNRs due to the absence of magnetism. Herein, based on the combined density functional theory (DFT) and matrix Green's function (MGF) approach, we consider aGNRs functionalized with various molecular groups, and show that the spin polarizations develop for some of the considered aGNR edge functionalization cases. The origin of the induced magnetism will be discussed within the Lieb's theorem [3]. This work will provide a novel guidance for the development of graphene-based spintronic devices.

  • A strong need to improve the quality of electric power is increased because of increasing use of the sensitive and small-sized electronic devices. The surges on the low-voltage ac power lines are induced by nearby lightning return strokes, and the facilities for HA, OA, FA, ME as well as computer are easily damaged by high-voltage transients. The behaviors of lightning surge characteristics transferred from the primary winding to the secondary winding in distribution transformers using a Marx generator were experimentally investigated. The transfer characteristics of lightning surge associated with a custom service ground of secondary side were also examined.

  • With rapid economic growth, numerous deep excavation projects for high-rise buildings and subway transportation networks have been constructed in the past two decades. Deep excavations particularly in thick deposits of soft clay may cause excessive ground movements and thus result in potential damage to adjacent buildings and supporting utilities. Extensive plane strain finite element analyses considering small strain effect have been carried out to examine the wall deflections for excavations in soft clay deposits supported by diaphragm walls and bracings. The excavation geometrical parameters, soil strength and stiffness properties, soil unit weight, the strut stiffness and wall stiffness were varied to study the wall deflection behaviour. Based on these results, a multivariate adaptive regression splines model was developed for estimating the maximum wall deflection. Parametric analyses were also performed to investigate the influence of the various design variables on wall deflections.

  • Photodissociation dynamics of tert-butyl isocyanide at 193 nm has been investigated by measuring rotationally resolved laser induced fluorescence spectra of CN fragments that were exclusively produced in the ground electronic state. From the spectra, internal energies of CN and translational energy releases in the products were obtained. The dissociation takes place in the excited triplet states which are strongly repulsive along the dissociation coordinate via curve crossing from the initially prepared state.
