  • This paper is concerned with the following Schrödinger-Poisson system $$\{\begin{array}{lll}-{\Delta}u+V(x)u+K(x){\phi}u=a(x){\mid}u{\mid}^{p-2}u&&\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^3,\\-{\Delta}{\phi}=K(x)u^2&&\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^3,\end{array}$$ where 4 < p < 6. For the case that K is nonnegative, V and a are indefinite, we prove the above problem possesses one ground state sign-changing solution with exactly two nodal domains by constraint variational method and quantitative deformation lemma. Moreover, we show that the energy of sign-changing solutions is larger than that of the ground state solutions. The novelty of this paper is that the potential a is indefinite and allowed to vanish at infinity. In this sense, we complement the existing results obtained by Batista and Furtado [5].

  • A new approach to design of a discrete-time robust $H_{\infty}$ filter in finite horizon case is proposed. It is shown that robust $H_{\infty}$ filtering problem can be cast into the minimization problem of an indefinite quadratic form, which can be solved by implementing the Kalman filter defined in Krein space. The proposed filter is readily derived by simply augmenting the state space model and has the robustness property against the parameter uncertainties of a given system.

  • I claim that the asymmetry of locality effects in wh-questions involving Complex Noun Phrase Island in Korean follows from the proposal for the asymmetric mode of scope taking between way (why) and the other wh-words in Korean as laid out in Choi (2002). 1 will show that the present proposal is superio. to the LF pied-piping approach in Nishigauchi (1990) and WH-structure pied-piping in von Stechow(1996) in that it does not have the fatal problem of wrong semantics in Nishigauchi and Subjacency violation problem in von Stechow. The crossed reading in examples involving Wh-island has an interesting implication for the mechanism of unselective binding, suggesting that Heim's (1982) quantifier indexing mechanism, which requires the local unselective binding of the indefinite by the unselective binder, may be too strong.

  • Suppose that G = (V, E) is a connected locally finite graph with the vertex set V and the edge set E. Let ${\Omega}{\subset}V$ be a bounded domain. Consider the following quasilinear elliptic equation on graph G $$\{-{\Delta}_{pu}={\lambda}K(x){\mid}u{\mid}^{p-2}u+f(x,u),\;x{\in}{\Omega}^{\circ},\\u=0,\;x{\in}{\partial}{\Omega},$$ where ${\Omega}^{\circ}$ and ${\partial}{\Omega}$ denote the interior and the boundary of ${\Omega}$, respectively, ${\Delta}_p$ is the discrete p-Laplacian, K(x) is a given function which may change sign, ${\lambda}$ is the eigenvalue parameter and f(x, u) has exponential growth. We prove the existence and monotonicity of the principal eigenvalue of the corresponding eigenvalue problem. Furthermore, we also obtain the existence of a positive solution by using variational methods.

  • We introduce and anlyze a naturally parallelizable frequency-domain method for parabolic problems with a Neumann boundary condition. After taking the Fourier transformation of given equations in the space-time domain into the space-frequency domain, we solve an indefinite, complex elliptic problem for each frequency. Fourier inversion will then recover the solution of the original problem in the space-time domain. Existence and uniqueness of a solution of the transformed problem corresponding to each frequency is established. Fourier invertibility of the solution in the frequency-domain is also examined. Error estimates for a finite element approximation to solutions fo transformed problems and full error estimates for solving the given problem using a discrete Fourier inverse transform are given.

  • Cavalieri is chiefly remembered for his work on the problem "indivisibles." Building on the work of Archimedes, he investigated the method of construction by which areas and volumes of curved figures could be found. Cavalieri regarded an area as made up of an indefinite number of parallel line segments and a volume of an indefinite number of parallel plane areas. He called these elements the indivisibles of area and volume. Cavalieri developed a method of the indivisibles which he used to determine areas and volumes. We call this Cavalieri's principle which states that there exists a plane such that any plane parallel to it intersects equal areas In both objects, then the volumes of the two objects are equal. Cavalieri's principle and method of the indivisibles are very important to understand of volume of a pyramid for gifted students.

  • Cao et al. in (Numer. Linear. Algebra Appl. 18 (2011) 875-895) proposed a splitting method for saddle point problems which unconditionally converges to the solution of the system. It was shown that a Krylov subspace method like GMRES in conjunction with the induced preconditioner is very effective for the saddle point problems. In this paper we first modify the iterative method, discuss its convergence properties and apply the induced preconditioner to the problem. Numerical experiments of the corresponding preconditioner are compared to the primitive one to show the superiority of our method.

  • This paper deals with the problem of generating the energy optimal trajectory which is intended to enhance the target tracking performance of a passive homing missile. Noticing that the essence of passive target tracking is the range estimation problem, the target information gathered by passive measurements can be readily analyzed by introducing the range estimator designed in line-of-sight(LOS) frame. Moreover, for the linear filter structure of the suggested range estimator, the cost function associated with the target information is clearly expressed as a function of the line-of-sight rate. Based on this idea, the optimal missile trajectory maximizing the target information is obtained by solving the saddle point problem for an indefinite quadratic cost which consists of the target information and the energy. It is shown that, different from the previous heuristic approaches, the guidance command producing the optimal passive homing trajectory is produced by the modified proportional navigation guidance law whose navigation constant is determined by the weighting coefficient for target information cost.

  • We design the robust and inherently fault tolerant decetralized$$H^infty$$ filter for the multisensor state estimation problem when there are insufficient priori informations on the statistical properties of external disturbances. For developing the proposed algorithm, an alternative form of suboptimal$$H^infty$$ filter equations are formulated by applying an alternative form of Kalman filter equations to the indefinite inner product space state model of suboptimal$$H^infty$$ filtering problems. The decentralized$$H^infty$$ filter that consists of local and central fusion filters can be designed effciently using the proposed alternative$$H^infty$$ filiter gain equations. The proposed decentralized$$H^infty$$ filter is robust against un-known external disturbances since it bounds the maximum energy gain from the external disturbances to the estimation errors under the prescribed level$$r^2$$ in both local and central fusion filters and is also fault tolerant due to its inherent redundancy. In addition, the central fusion equations between the global and local data can reduce the unnecessary calculation burden effectively. Computer simulations are made to ceritfy the robustness and fault tolerance of the proposed algorithm.
