A Probabilistic neural network (PNN) technique for predicting the stability number for the armor blocks of breakwaters is presented. A PNN is prepared using the experimental data of van der Meer and is then compared with the empirical formula and previous artificial neural network (ANN) model. This comparison shows that a PNN can effectively predict the stability numbers in spite of data complexity, incompleteness, and incoherence, and can be an effective tool for the designers of rubble mound breakwaters to support their decision process and to improve design efficiency.
Most codes of practice state that for large in-plane structures it is necessary to account for the spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. There are essentially three effects that contribute for this variation: (i) wave passage effect, due to finite propagation velocity; (ii) incoherence effect, due to differences in superposition of waves; and (iii) the local site amplification due to spatial variation in geological conditions. This paper discusses the procedures to be undertaken in the time domain analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. The artificial synthesis of correlated displacements series that simulate the earthquake load is discussed first. Next, it is described the 3D model of the International Guadiana Bridge used for running tests with seismic analysis. A comparison of the effects produced by seismic waves with different apparent propagation velocities and different geological conditions is undertaken. The results in this study show that the differences between the analysis with and without spatial variability of earthquake ground motion can be important for some displacements and internal forces, especially those influenced by symmetric modes.
Compressive sensing (CS) is a novel sampling paradigm that samples signals in a much more efficient way than the established Nyquist sampling theorem. CS has recently gained a lot of attention due to its exploitation of signal sparsity. Sparsity, an inherent characteristic of many natural signals, enables the signal to be stored in few samples and subsequently be recovered accurately, courtesy of CS. This article gives a brief background on the origins of this idea, reviews the basic mathematical foundation of the theory and then goes on to highlight different areas of its application with a major emphasis on communications and network domain. Finally, the survey concludes by identifying new areas of research where CS could be beneficial.
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of transient stochastic analysis on nonlinear response of earth and rock-fill dams to spatially varying ground motion. The dam models are analyzed by a stochastic finite element method based on the equivalent linear method which considers the nonlinear variation of soil shear moduli and damping ratio as a function of shear strain. The spatial variability of ground motion is taken into account with the incoherence, wave-passage and site response effects. Stationary as well as transient stochastic response analyses are performed for the considered dam types. A time dependent frequency response function is used throughout the study for transient stochastic responses. It is observed that stationarity is a reasonable assumption for earth and rock-fill dams to typical durations of strong shaking.
The objective of this paper is to obtain the contribution of each source to the spectrum of pressure, when there are multiple incoherent sources in near-field acoustic holography. For this objective, we have to obtain signals very coherent to the input signals of the sources. To obtain the very coherent signals, many people have measured pressure signals in the vincinity of the sources. However, it is sometimes difficult to locate microphones near to the sources so that the signals are very coherent to the input signals. This paper proposed a method to obtain the very coherent signals by near-field acoustic holography. Therefore, the proposed method does not require the measurement of pressure near to each source. Simulation results for two incoherent monopole sources showed the possibility of the proposed method.
We investigate neural network image reconstruction for magnetic particle imaging. The network performance strongly depends on the convolution effects of the spectrum input data. The larger convolution effect appearing at a relatively smaller nanoparticle size obstructs the network training. The trained single-layer network reveals the weighting matrix consisting of a basis vector in the form of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. The weighting matrix corresponds to an inverse system matrix, where an incoherency of basis vectors due to low convolution effects, as well as a nonlinear activation function, plays a key role in retrieving the matrix elements. Test images are well reconstructed through trained networks having an inverse kernel matrix. We also confirm that a multi-layer network with one hidden layer improves the performance. Based on the results, a neural network architecture overcoming the low incoherence of the inverse kernel through the classification property is expected to become a better tool for image reconstruction.
At present, many applications independently provide access control for their own resources, for example Web, Databases and Operating Systems, etc. Such independent access control systems result in multiple access control configurations each of which deals with the access control in its own application context. Since those multiple configurations are operated in isolation, and maintained by possibly different administrators, they are likely to be incoherent. In this paper, we propose a logical specification to reason about multiple access control configurations. Our specification can be used to detect the incoherence in multiple configurations. Furthermore, it of offers many kinds of policies for multiple configurations that can capture several kinds of requirements for multiple access control systems.

A robust optical security technique using ortho-gonally polarized lights in the interferometer is proposed. We use orthogonally polarized lights in order to minimize the noise generated by the refractive index change due to vibration, flow of air, change of temperature etc. To make orthogonally polarized lights the first beam splitter in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer is substituted by a polarizing beam splitter(PBS). Because of incoherence of orthogonally polarized lights, the noise generated by the change of refractive index is minimized. To encrypt an image we use the random partition and the diffusing of pixel. Finally we make Phase-only-filters of each image which is randomly partitioned and diffused pixel by pixel. Simulation results show the proposed system has the ability of encryption and decryption of an image.
In this paper, a new positioning method with incoherence of white light is described and practically implemented to attach VCR heads on a drum very accurately. This method utilizes the Michelson Interferometer which uses white light with short coherence length as the light source to generate interference fringes only in case the optical path difference is shorter than about 2.mu.m. The course position of VCR heads and the fine are determined by appearance and visibility of interference fringes, respectively. The appearance are detected by an image processing technique using FFT(Fast Fourier Transform).

The problem of model selection arises in a number of contexts, such as subset selection in linear regression, estimation of structures in graphical models, and signal denoising. This paper studies non-asymptotic model selection for the general case of arbitrary (random or deterministic) design matrices and arbitrary nonzero entries of the signal. In this regard, it generalizes the notion of incoherence in the existing literature on model selection and introduces two fundamental measures of coherence-termed as the worst-case coherence and the average coherence-among the columns of a design matrix. It utilizes these two measures of coherence to provide an in-depth analysis of a simple, model-order agnostic one-step thresholding (OST) algorithm for model selection and proves that OST is feasible for exact as well as partial model selection as long as the design matrix obeys an easily verifiable property, which is termed as the coherence property. One of the key insights offered by the ensuing analysis in this regard is that OST can successfully carry out model selection even when methods based on convex optimization such as the lasso fail due to the rank deficiency of the submatrices of the design matrix. In addition, the paper establishes that if the design matrix has reasonably small worst-case and average coherence then OST performs near-optimally when either (i) the energy of any nonzero entry of the signal is close to the average signal energy per nonzero entry or (ii) the signal-to-noise ratio in the measurement system is not too high. Finally, two other key contributions of the paper are that (i) it provides bounds on the average coherence of Gaussian matrices and Gabor frames, and (ii) it extends the results on model selection using OST to low-complexity, model-order agnostic recovery of sparse signals with arbitrary nonzero entries. In particular, this part of the analysis in the paper implies that an Alltop Gabor frame together with OST can successfully carry out model selection and recovery of sparse signals irrespective of the phases of the nonzero entries even if the number of nonzero entries scales almost linearly with the number of rows of the Alltop Gabor frame.
