  • The main purpose of this paper is to develop the results introduced in Artan (1996) and to find a general nonlocal linear elastic solution for Boussinesq problem. The general nonlocal solution given Artan (1996) is valid only when the distance to the boundary is greater than one atomic measure. The nonlocal stress field presented in this paper is valid for the whole half plane.

  • Magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of amorphous Sm-Fe and Sm-Fe-B thin films are systematically investigated over a wide composition range from 14.1 to 71.7 at.% Sm. The films were fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering using a composite target composed of an Fe (or Fe-B) plate and Sm chips. The amount of B added ranges from 0.3 to 0.8 at. %. The microstructure, examined by X-ray diffraction, mainly consists of an amorphous phase in the intermediate Sm content range from 20 to 45 at.%. Together with an amorphous phase, crystalline phases of Fe and Sm also exist at low and high ends of the Sm content, respectively. Well-developed in-plane anisotropy is formed over the whole compositionrange, except for the low Sm content below 15 at.% and the high Sm content above 55 at %. As the Sm content increases, the saturation magnetization decreases linearly and the coercive force tends to increase, with the exception of the low Sm content where very large magnitudes of the saturation magnetization and the coercive force are observed due to the existence of the crystalline $\alpha$-Fe phase. The coercive force is affected rather substantially by the B addition, resulting in lower values of the coercive force in the practically important Sm content range of 30 to 40 at.%. Good magnetic softness indicated by well-developed in-plane anisotropy, a square-shaped hysteresis loop and a low magnitude of the coercive force results in good magnetostrictive characteristics in both Sm-Fe-B thin films. The magnetostrictive characteristics, particularly at low magnetic fields, are further improved by the addition of B; for example, at a magnetic field of 100 Oe, the magnitude of magnetostriction is -350 ppm in a Sm-Fe thin film and it is -470 ppm in a B containing Sm-Fe thin film.

  • There is an indispensable need for force calibration for quantitative nanoscale force measurement using atomic force microscopy. Calibrating the normal force is relatively straightforward, whereas doing so for the lateral force is often complicated because of the difficulty in determining the optical lever sensitivity. In particular, the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment often has a larger uncertainty as a result of the effects of the epoxy, the location of the colloidal particle on the cantilever, and a decrease in the quality factor. In this work, the lateral force of a colloidal probe using a reference cantilever with a known spring constant was calibrated in a liquid environment. By obtaining the spring constant and the lateral sensitivity at the equator of a spherical colloidal particle, the damage to the bottom surface of the colloidal particle could be eliminated. Further, it was shown that the effect of the contact stiffness on the determination of the lateral spring constant of the cantilever could be minimized. It was concluded that this method can be effectively used for the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment.

  • In this study, a method is proposed for the cutting force prediction of Ball-end milling process using Z-map is proposed. Any types of cutting area generated from previous cutting process can be expressed in z-map data. Cutting edge of a ball-end mill is divided into a set of finite cutting edges and the position of this edge is projected to the cross-section plane normal to the Z-axis. Comparing this projected position with Z-map data of cutting area and determining whether it is in the cutting region, total cutting force can be calculated by means of numerical integration. A series of experiments such as side cutting and upward/downard cutting was performet to verify the simulated cutting force.

  • This study was performed the blankholding force and Vee-ring effects on blanking characteristics, such as maximum blanking force, burnish, dish-shape, hardness. etc. in fine-blanking die by the experimental method. Two types of aluminum (Al.1050-O, Al, 5052-H) Such as annealed and unannealed materials were used for the experiment. In order to get a hydrostatic pressure effect, the clearance was set to 0.5% of the thickness of strip, and the counter punch and stripper plate with Vee-ring was set-up. While this experiment was carry8ing out, the average blanking velocity was constant (37.5mm/sec). As a result of this study, we got a good surface roughness and a dimensions, the good squareness and the reduction of dish-shape could be obtained, and also the additional results obtained were such that the hardness of shear plane was increased and the maximum blanking force was reduce in the condition of Vee-ring height of 1.0~1.5mm, and blankholding force of 1200kg.

  • Forced vibration of a thin circular ring with a concentrated harmonic force is analyzed when the ring is free and has only the in-plane motion. Using the unit doublet function for external force, the governing equation is obtained and is solved by the use of Laplace transform. The exact solutions of displacement components and bending moment are obtained. In order to verify the solutions of analysis, finite element analysis is performed and the results shows good agreement. Then, frequency response curves for displacement and bending moment are obtained. In deriving the governing equations and the solutions, nondimensional parameter of the exciting frequency and the magnitude of exciting force are extracted. As the displacement components are obtained, the remaining bending strain, slope, curvature, shear force, etc. can also be derived. With the results of this work, the responses of a free ring excited on multiple points with different frequencies can also be obtained easily by superposition.

  • A numerical method is presented for an out-of-plane structural intensity analysis of rectangular thick plates with arbitrary elastic edge constraints. The method adapts an assumed mode method based on Timoshenko beam functions to obtain the velocities and internal forces needed for a structural intensity analysis. To verify the presented method, the structural intensity of a square thick plate under harmonic force excitation, for which four edges are simply supported, is analyzed, and the result is compared with existing solutions using the assumed mode method based on trigonometric functions. In addition, numerical analyses are carried out for a rectangular-shaped thick plate under harmonic force excitations, of which three edges are simply supported and one edge utilizes an arbitrary elastic edge constraint. These numerical examples show the good accuracy and applicability of the presented method for rectangular thick plates with arbitrary edge constraints.

  • Two uppor bound solutions, by the force balance method and by a kinematically admissible velocity field, are compared for the metal forming problems in plane strain. It is concluded that these two approaches always give identical results when the geometrical configurations of the deformation model reman the same. By detailed derivations for plastic bending of a notched bar, closed die forging, compression of a rectangular block, machining with a restricted contact tool and plane strain backward extrusion, the identity of both approaches is verified.

  • The dynamic earthquake analysis of plane cable-stayed bridge structures was formulated and implemented into a computer program which analyzes plane cable-stayed bridge structu- res subjected to initial cable tensions, member dead and live loads and seismic loads. Cable-stayed bridges were modelled as multi-degrees of freedom systems with lumped- mass. Various earthquake responses such as dynamic deflection, bending moment, shear force and cable tension were investigated by the dynamic analyses in the form of the time history analysis. The time history analysis was based on the mode superposition method. The study revealed that Fan-l type cable-syayed bridges is generally superior to other types for the earthquake proof even though aspects of deflection and section force of each type presents respective advantages and disadvantages. The study provided a method to design the sections of cable-stayed bridges under seismic loads with various design parameters related to structural types. The study is expected to be useful for effective design of cable-stayed bridges with conside- ration of earthquake.
