  • Virtual Reality simulation enables immersive 3D experience of a Virtual Environment. A simulation-based VE can be used to map real world phenomena into virtual experience. This research studies on the use of Newton's physics law to demonstrate the effects of forces upon object's falling movement, and their effects towards other fallible objects. A reconfigurable simulation enables users to reconfigure the parameters of the objects involved in the simulation, so that they can see different effects from the different configurations, such as force magnitude and distance between objects. This concept is suitable for a classroom learning of physics law. Preliminary implementation is done on a PC with a joystick for 4DOF movement. The graphics is implemented by SGI OpenGL Performer. A middleware called NAVERLib that consists of Performer's modules for easy XML-based configuration is used for management of visualization, network and devices connection, and where the engine of this domino simulation is attached.

  • This paper, as a conlcusion to this special issue, presents the future work that is being carried out at NTU Singapore in collaboration with Microsoft Research and Microsoft Azure for Research. For our research team the real frontier research in world histories starts when we want to use computers to structure historical information, model historical narratives, simulate theoretical large scale hypotheses, and incent world historians to use virtual assistants and/or engage them in teamwork using social media and/or seduce them with immersive spaces to provide new learning and sharing environments, in which new things can emerge and happen: "You do not know which will be the next idea. Just repeating the same things is not enough" (Carlo Rubbia, 1984 Nobel Price in Physics, at Nanyang Technological University on January 19, 2016).

  • This paper presents the quantitative evaluation of the fearfulness of the human driver in the case of the short range (time) on the highway. The driving situation is realized by using the driving simulator based on CAVE, which provides three-dimensional stereoscopic immersive visual information. The examinees' responses and personal information are categorized reasonably by applying the competitive learning algorithm. The characteristics of each group are analyzed. The following two situations are also compared: (1) the active approaching situation where the examinee drives the vehicle near the preceding vehicle, and (2) the passive approaching situation where the preceding vehicle nears the examinee's vehicle by gradually decelerating. The range time that the examinee feels fear in the active approaching case tends to be shorter than that in the passive approaching case.

  • This paper is designed to examine the effectiveness of Computational Thinking and programming awareness by designing and applying programming classes using Havruta. In the present society, where the Fourth Industrial Revolution was in full swing, the capacity to be equipped has changed, and the education has been changed accordingly. Programming education is logically capable of thinking and improves comprehensive problem solving skills. This direction of programming education allows us to get ideas for solving problems based on computing thoughts and to create our own creative results. However, because they require the grammar of the programming language and many additional abilities, they are not easy for learners, and individual differences in competencies make learning less immersive and interesting. In this paper, to solve the problems of the uniform programming class, this study is designed and applied to the class applying the Jewish traditional teaching method, Havruta's teaching method, to find out the effect of computing thinking and programming perception.

  • This paper focuses on human activities monitoring problem using onboard smartphone sensors as data generator. Monitoring such activities can be very important to detect anomalies and prevent disease from patients. Machine learning (ML) algorithms appear to be ideal approaches to use for processing data from smartphone to get sense of how to classify human activities. ML algorithms depend on quality, the quantity and even more important, the properties or features, that can be learnt from data. This paper proposes a mobile virtual reality visualization system that helps to view data representation in a very immersive way so that its quality and discriminative characteristics may be evaluated and improved. The proposed system comes as well with a handy data collecting application that can be accessed directly by the VR visualization part.

  • The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach is described as an immersive argument-based science inquiry focusing particularly on learning through epistemic practices. In the literature, several previous studies indicate how academic achievement is positively influenced by the SWH. In addition to these previous studies, several meta-syntheses of qualitative data have been conducted on this particular topic. With these literatures in mind, a quantitative meta-analysis was conducted with ten studies (N = 724) to examine the effectiveness of the SWH on student achievement in Turkey. To present a thoroughly detailed report, this study also examined the following moderators: grade level, subject area, school location, intervention length, and report source. Overall, this study found that in Turkey, the SWH classrooms performed better in academic achievement tests than traditional lecture-based classrooms. Additionally, the SWH is more likely to be effective regardless of grade levels, subject areas, and school locations.

  • Indoor localization is one of the basic elements of Location-Based Service, such as indoor navigation, location-based precision marketing, spatial recognition of robotics, augmented reality, and mixed reality. We propose a Voxel Labeling-based visual positioning system using object simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Our method is a method of determining a location through single image 3D cuboid object detection and object SLAM for indoor navigation, then mapping to create an indoor map, addressing it with voxels, and matching with a defined space. First, high-quality cuboids are created from sampling 2D bounding boxes and vanishing points for single image object detection. And after jointly optimizing the poses of cameras, objects, and points, it is a Visual Positioning System (VPS) through matching with the pose information of the object in the voxel database. Our method provided the spatial information needed to the user with improved location accuracy and direction estimation.

  • It is not an exaggeration to say that a single fire causes a lot of damage, so fires are one of the disaster situations that must be alerted as soon as possible. Various technologies have been utilized so far because preventing and detecting fires can never be completely accomplished with individual human efforts. Recently, deep learning technology has been developed, and fire detection systems using object detection neural networks are being actively studied. In this paper, we propose a new fire detection system that improves the previously studied fire detection system. We train the YOLOv8 model using refined datasets through improved labeling methods, derive results, and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system by comparing it with the results of previous studies.
