  • In this note, we apply a maximum principle related to volume growth of a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold, which was recently obtained by Alías, Caminha and do Nascimento in [4], to establish new uniqueness and nonexistence results concerning maximal spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in a generalized Robertson-Walker (GRW) spacetime obeying the timelike convergence condition. A study of entire solutions for the maximal hypersurface equation in GRW spacetimes is also made and, in particular, a new Calabi-Bernstein type result is presented.

  • Cosmetic mask is one of the traditional cosmetic product and is used to keep skin healthy and beautiful through moisturizing effect, cleansing effect and acceleration effect on microcirculation. There are several types of cosmetic mask such as peel-off type, tissue-off type, wash-off type and cotton sheet type immersed in cosmetic water. It is important for cosmetic formulators to develop an adequate type of cosmetic mask that meets the needs of the target consumers because each type of cosmetic mask has benefits and problems in its usage and efficacy. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is widely used as an active ingredient of peel-off type cosmetic mask and the physical property of the PVA film changes with the usage of other ingredients. We studied the change of physical properties of the film containing PVA by formulating peel-off type cosmetic mask with the variation of humectants. Methylguceth-20 and glycereth-26 reduce the interaction between skin surface and PVA film without serious weakening of tensile strength and they can alleviate irritation. Glycerin, urea and betaine help PVA film soften and they also have excellent efficacy as humectants.

  • The Partial breakdown (PBD) and complete breakdown (BD) voltage characteristics in a composite insulation system of glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) and liquid nitrogen are investigated to find the PBB and BD characteristics in solenoid type high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils at quench. The electrode system used is made from a coaxial spiral coil-to-cylindrical electrode with an insulation barrier and spacers, and is immersed in liquid nitrogen. A heater is mounted inside the coil electrode to generate boiling which occurs on quenched superconducting coils. The experimental results show that: (1) breakdown voltages are affected severely by the risetime of the applied voltage and the PBD inception voltage, (2) two kinds of BD mechanisms are found depending on the shape of the spacer, length of cooling channel and heater power.

  • This paper presents the hybrid type based expert system for fault diagnosis in transformers. The proposed system uses the novel fault diagnostic technique based on dissolved gas analysis(DGA) in oil-immersed transformers. The uncertainty of key gas analysis, norm threshold, and gas ratio boundaries are managed by using a fuzzy set. Also, the uncertainty of the fault diagnostic rules are handled by using fuzzy measures. Finally, kohnen's feature map performs fault classification in transformers. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed diagnosis technique, the hybrid type based expert system for fault diagnosis has been tested by using KEPCO's transformer gas records.

  • In this paper, we researched breakdown characteristics of paper/liquid nitrogen composite insulation system for application of a high temperature superconducting cable. And, we have studied the AC breakdown performance of paper/ice composite insulating system immersed in liquid nitrogen. The electric strength in this paper/ice composite system is higher than that of paper/liquid nitrogen system. Furthermore this system shows a self-healing type breakdown behavior. Among the many kinds of liquid to be immersed and frozen to the ice, deionized water gives the highest electric breakdown strength. The paper/ice composite insulation system is thought to be one of good candidate for the electrical insulating system at cryogenic temperature.

  • Herein the motion of a freely-floating sphere in a water of finite depth is analysed within the framework of a linear potential theory. A velocity potential describing fluid motion is generated by distributing pulsating sources and dipoles on the immersed surface of the sphere, without introducing an inner flow model. The potential becomes the solution of an integral equation of Fredholm's second type. In the light of the vertical axisymmetry of the flow, surface integrals reduce to line integrals, which are approximated by summation of the products of the integrand and the length of segments along the contour. Following this computational scheme the diffraction potential and the radiation potential are determined from the same algorithm of solving a set of simultaneous linear equations. Upon knowing values of the potentials hydrodynamic forces such as added mass, hydrodynamic damping and wave exciting forces are evaluated by the integrating pressure over the immersed surface of the sphere. It is found in the case of finite water depth that the hydrodynamic forces are much different from the corresponding ones in deep water. Accordingly motion response of the sphere in a water of finite depth displays a particular behavior both in a amplitude and phase.

  • The heat transfer experiment in a pilot scale latent heat storage tank as a solar energy storage system for the hot water supply was carried out. The latent heat storage tank was consisted of three parts; Outer shell for hot water from solar collector, PCM storage vessel in the middle of the tank and immersed coil in the PCM vessel for hot water recovery. The heat storage tank has the dimension of 115 cm in height and 32 cm outside diameter. Paraffin wax (m.p = 55.4C) and sodium acetate trihydrate (m.p = 58 C) were employed as the PCM this study. Experimental variables were inlet temperature and flow rate of the hot water for heat storage stage and cold water for heat recovery stage. Temperature profiles, heat transfer coefficient and the efficiency of heat storage $(Q/Q_{max})$ and heat recovery $(Q/Q_{max})$ were determined for the paraffin wax and inorganic salt respectively.

  • Objectives: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fluoride application after dental prophylaxis by the type of dental floss. Methods: Artificial caries lesion was made on the surface of cow's permanent teeth having sound enamel surface and vickers hardness number(VHN) was measured. Specimens were classified into APF gel group and artificial saliva group. Each group was divided into waxed floss group and unwaxed flossed group. All specimens were immersed into the artificial saliva for one minute and dental flossing was applied to waxed or unwaxed floss. After washing and drying, APF gel groups were applied with fluoride for four minutes and artificial saliva groups were immersed into the artificial saliva for four minutes. After treatment, specimens were measured by VHN and surface conditions of enamel were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Results: VHN of waxed flossing and fluoride application group increased to $6.78{\pm}2.75$. VHN of unwaxed flossing and fluoride application group increased to $7.36{\pm}2.51$. There was no significant difference between waxed and unwaxed groups(p>0.05). VHN of waxed flossing and artificial saliva group increased to $1.07{\pm}2.84$. VHN of waxed flossing and artificial saliva group increased to $1.05{\pm}3.13$. There was no significant difference between waxed and unwaxed groups(p>0.05). There was significant increase in VHN between waxed/unwaxed flossing and fluoride application. However, waxed/unwaxed flossing with artificial saliva showed no significant VHN increase. SEM demonstrated no residue on the enamel surface in the waxed flossing groups. Conclusions: No difference was found in the remineralization of enamel by waxed flossing or unwaxed flossing.
