Recognition of Container Identifiers Using 8-directional Contour Tracking Method and Refined RBF Network

  • Generally, it is difficult to find constant patterns on identifiers in a container image, since the identifiers are not normalized in color, size, and position, etc. and their shapes are damaged by external environmental factors. This paper distinguishes identifier areas from background noises and removes noises by using an ART2-based quantization method and general morphological information on the identifiers such as color, size, ratio of height to width, and a distance from other identifiers. Individual identifier is extracted by applying the 8-directional contour tracking method to each identifier area. This paper proposes a refined ART2-based RBF network and applies it to the recognition of identifiers. Through experiments with 300 container images, the proposed algorithm showed more improved accuracy of recognizing container identifiers than the others proposed previously, in spite of using shorter training time.

  • The desire for a technology that can mechanically acquire 2D images starting with the manual method of drawing has been making possible a wide range of modern image-based technologies and applications over a period. Moreover, this trend of the utilization of image-related technology as well as image-based information is likely to continue. Naturally, as like other technology areas, the function that humans produce and utilize by using images needs to be automated by using computing-based technologies. Surprisingly, technology using images in the future will be able to discover knowledge that humans have never known before through the information-related process that enables new perception, far beyond the scope of use that human has used before. Regarding this trend, the manipulation and configuration of massively distributed image database system is strongly demanded. In this paper, we discuss image identifier production methods based on the utilization of the image hashing technique which especially puts emphasis over an entropy operator.

The Identifier Recognition from Shipping Container Image by Using Contour Tracking and Self-Generation Supervised Learning Algorithm Based on Enhanced ART1 (윤곽선 추적과 개선된 ART1 기반 자가 생성 지도 학습 알고리즘을 이용한 운송 컨테이너 영상의 식별자 인식)

  • In general, the extraction and recognition of identifier is very hard work, because the scale or location of identifier is not fixed-form. And, because the provided image is contained by camera, it has some noises. In this paper, we propose methods for automatic detecting edge using canny edge mask. After detecting edges, we extract regions of identifier by detected edge information's. In regions of identifier, we extract each identifier using contour tracking algorithm. The self-generation supervised learning algorithm is proposed for recognizing them, which has the algorithm of combining the enhanced ART1 and the supervised teaming method. The proposed method has applied to the container images. The extraction rate of identifier obtained by using contour tracking algorithm showed better results than that from the histogram method. Furthermore, the recognition rate of the self-generation supervised teaming method based on enhanced ART1 was improved much more than that of the self-generation supervised learning method based conventional ART1.

  • Recent enhancement in the still image acquisition devices has been widely perpetrated into the daily life of the common people. Due to this trend, the voluminous still images, that are produced and shared in the personal or the massive storage, need to controlled with effective and efficient management. The human-devised or system-generated still image identifiers used for the identification of the images are at risk in the situation of unexpected changing or eliminating of the identifiers. In this paper, we propose a parallel processing based method for still image identifier generation by utilizing the still image internal features.

  • Composite and compact devices equipped with the functionality of digital still image acquisition, such as cellular phones and MP3 players are widely available to common users. In addition, the application of digital still images is becoming common among security and digital recording devices. The amount of still images, that are maintained or shared in personal storage or massive storage provided by various web services, are rapidly increasing. These still images are bound with file names or identifiers that are provided arbitrarily by users or that are generated from device specific naming method. However, those identifiers are vulnerable for unexpected changing or eliminating so that it becomes a problem in still image search or management. In this paper, we propose a method for still image identifier generation that is created from the still image internal information.

  • Recently, Web applications, such as Stock Image and Image Library, are developed to provide the integrated management for user's images. Image hash techniques are used for the image registration, management and retrieval as the identifier and many researches have been performed to raise the hash performance. This paper proposes GLOCAL image hashing method utilizing the hierarchical histogram which based on histogram bin population method. So far, many researches have proven that image hashing techniques based on histogram are robust image processing and geometrical attack. We modified existing image hashing method developed by our research team. The main idea is that it makes more fluent hash string if we have histogram bin of specific length as shown in the body of paper. Finally, we can raise the magnitude of hash string within same context or feature and strengthen the robustness of hash.

  • Unlike modern photography technology, in the early days, efforts to physically compose an image with a concept similar to the current photograph have not been popular or commercially successful. The limitation of the use of images as artistic media or recordings has reached the stage of introducing the technology of image analysis to automate the function that humans recognize and judge through vision. In addition, the accuracy of the image has exceeded the human visual ability, enabling the technology that enables the step of recognizing and informing the fact that the human is not aware of it. Based on such a base, the range that can be applied through the image data in the future era can be said to be unpredictable, and the technology that targets large scale image database instead of an image is also expanding the possibilities as a new application technology. In order to identify a particular image from a massive database, different methodologies have been introduced. In this paper, we discuss image identifier production methods based on multi-resolution pyramid.

  • Human beings have been fascinated by the applicability of the medium of photography since the device was first introduced in the thirteenth century to acquire images by attempting primitive and rudimentary approaches. In the 21st century, it has been developed as a wide range of technology that enables not only the application of artistic expression as a method of replacing the human-hand-painted screen but also the planar recording form in the format of video or image. It is more effective to use the information extracted from the image data rather than to use a randomly given file name in order to provide a variety of services in the offline or online system. When extracting an identifier from a region of an image, high cost cannot be avoided. This paper discusses the image entropy-based approach and proposes a linear methodology to measure the image entropy in an effort to devise a solution to this method.

  • Digital visual information(image and video) plays an important role in our society, and everyday, more and more visual information is available from many sources around the world. And there is an increasing number of cases where the these visual informations are created, stored, retrieved, and re-used by computational systems. But information modification, distortion and compilation occurred through trans-coding or legal/illegal information processing often make these operations difficult. Subordinately, advanced technology or commercialized software for retrieving and identifying the desired information among these massive and diverse ones is strongly required. In the paper, some recent activities and technical content of MPEG-7 Visual Group are described, especially with regarding to Visual Identifier.
