  • This paper describes a normalized numeric image descriptor used to assess the luminance and contrast of the image. The proposed image descriptor used the each pixel data as weighted value of the probability density function (PDF) and defined by normalization in order to objective represent. The proposed image numeric descriptor can be used to the adaptive gamma process because it suggests the objective basis of the gamma value selection.

  • This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.

  • Image retrieval is one of the most exciting and fastest growing research fields in the area of multimedia technology. As the amount of digital contents continues to grow users are experiencing increasing difficulty in finding specific images in their image libraries. This paper proposes an efficient image descriptor which uses a local color and texture in the non-overlapped block images. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we assessed the retrieval efficiency in terms of ANMRR with common image dataset. The experimental trials revealed that the proposed algorithm exhibited a significant improvement in ANMRR, compared to Dominant Color Descriptor and Edge Histogram Descriptor.

  • Query-by-example (QBE) is a well-known method for image retrieval. In reality, however, an example image to be used for the query is rarely available. Therefore, it is often necessary to find a good example image to be used for the query before applying the QBE method. Query-by-layout (QBL) is our proposal for that purpose. In particular, we make use of the visual descriptors such as the edge histogram descriptor (EHD) and the color layout descriptor (CLD) in MPEG-7. Since image features of the CLD and the EHD can be localized in terms of a$4{\times}4$ sub-image, we can specify image features such as color and edge distribution on each sub-image separately for image retrieval without a query image. Experimental results show that the proposed query method can be used to retrieve a good image as a starting point for further QBE-based image retrieval.

  • In this paper, a speed-up technique for the non-local means (NLM) image denoising method based on local binary descriptor (LBD) is proposed. In the NLM, most of the computation time is spent on searching for non-local similar patches in the search window. The local binary descriptor which represents the structure of patch as binary strings is employed to speed up the search process in the NLM. The descriptor allows for a fast and accurate preselection of non-local similar patches by bitwise operations. Using this approach, a tradeoff between time-saving and noise removal can be obtained. Simulations exhibit that despite being principally constructed for speed, the proposed algorithm outperforms in terms of denoising quality as well. Furthermore, a parallel implementation on GPU brings NLM-LBD to real-time image denoising.

  • MPEG-7 standardization work has started with the aims of providing fundamental tools for describing multimedia contents. MPEG-7 defines the syntax and semantics of descriptors and description schemes so that they may be used as fundamental tools for multimedia content description. In this paper, we introduce a texture based image description and retrieval method, which is adopted as the homogeneous texture descriptor in the visual part of the MPEG-7 final committee draft. The current MPEG-7 homogeneous texture descriptor consists of the mean, the standard deviation value of an image, energy, and energy deviation values of Fourier transform of the image. These are extracted from partitioned frequency channels based on the human visual system (HVS). For reliable extraction of the texture descriptor, Radon transformation is employed. This is suitable for HVS behavior. We also introduce various matching methods; for example, intensity-invariant, rotation-invariant and/or scale-invariant matching. This technique retrieves relevant texture images when the user gives a querying texture image. In order to show the promising performance of the texture descriptor, we take the experimental results with the MPEG-7 test sets. Experimental results show that the MPEG-7 texture descriptor gives an efficient and effective retrieval rate. Furthermore, it gives fast feature extraction time for constructing the texture descriptor.

  • Requirement of effective image handling methods such as image retrieval has been increasing with the rising production and consumption of multimedia data. In this paper, a method of constructing more effective descriptor is proposed for robust keypoint based image retrieval. The proposed method uses information embedded in the first order and second order derivative images, in addition to the scale space image, for the descriptor construction. The performance of multi-image descriptor is evaluated in terms of the similarities in keypoints with a public domain image database that contains various image transformations. The proposed descriptor shows significant improvement in keypoint matching with minor increase of the length.

  • Feature detection and description are key ingredients of common image processing and computer vision applications. Most existing algorithms focus on robust feature matching under challenging conditions, such as inplane rotations and scale changes. Consequently, they usually fail when the scene is blurred by camera shake or an object's motion. To solve this problem, we propose a new feature description algorithm that is robust to image blur and significantly improves the feature matching performance. The proposed algorithm builds a feature descriptor by considering the integral projection along four angular directions ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $135^{\circ}$) and by combining four projection vectors into a single highdimensional vector. Intensive experiment shows that the proposed descriptor outperforms existing descriptors for different types of blur caused by linear motion, nonlinear motion, and defocus. Furthermore, the proposed descriptor is robust to intensity changes and image rotation.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to represent the image by using shape descriptor having an information of area. The proposed descriptor is a set of vectors, consists of radius, area and direction parameters in the concentrated center point. Due to the area parameter, we know our descriptor can obtain the information of area. Also, we give an extended shape descriptor to get more detailed representation. To do this, we move the center point of our vision to that point for region of interest. By doing so about all of region of interest, we can get our descriptor for detailed information of the image. From more detailed descriptor, it's natural that it's more efficient fur representation, retrievals and so on. We make it the normalized pattern and expand to improve its quality. The proposed method is invariant to scale, position and rotation. The results show that it can be used efficiently for image representation as we can see in retrievals of silhouette images.
