  • A series-parallel system with independent but non-identical components is considered. The expressions have been derived for the joint reliability importance (JRI) of m (${\geq}2$) components, chosen from a series-parallel system. JRIs of components of two different series-parallel systems are studied analytically and graphically.

  • This Paper deals with an applicatoin of Luenberger Observer to the Linear Stochastic Systems. The basic technique is the use of a matrix version of the Maximum Principle of Pontryagin coupled with the use of gradient matrices to derive the gain matix for minimum error covariance. The optimal observer which is derived turns out to be identical to the well-known Kalman-Bucy Filter.

  • We have cloned and characterized an antiapoptotic gene, p35, which blocks apoptosis, from Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) K1 strain. The 897 bp p35 has an open reading frame of 299 amino acids. The BmNPV-K1 p35 showed a high identity to Autographa californica nuclear polyhedrosis virus and BmNPV T3 strain. The BmNPV-K1 p35 was different from the amino acid sequences of BmNPV T3 at 6 positions. The p35 gene of BmNPV-K1 was 99.2% identical at the nucleotide level and 98% identical at the amino acid level to BmNPV T3. The location of p35 gene in the BmNPV-K1 genome was confirmed by Southern blot analysis and its expression patterns at the transcriptional level in the infected cells were con- firmed by Northern hybridization analysis.

  • Vertebrates with different habitats have different proportions of visual cells, with the rod cells responding to scotopic vision and the cone cells responding to photopic and color vision in their retinas. The present work studied whether the kinds and arrangement patterns of the cone cells and interlocking morphology of the lens were related to the kind of preys and habitats in the genus Zacco. The retinas were observed by a light microscopy using H-E staining method and the interlocking formula of the lens fibers were investigated by a scanning electron microscopy. The interlocking formula of the lens fibers of Z. temmincki is an ' anchor and socket ' connection, and that of Z. platypus is a ' ball and socket ' connection. The cone cells of Z. platypus and Z. temmincki constituted compacted mosaic patterns of row type. Away from the center, the double and single cone cells gradually increased in diameter. Zacco temmincki had identical double cone cells and Z. platypus had non-identical double and single cone cells. The eyes of Z. temminckifeeding on a moving aquatic insects in relative limpid water and swift current of mid and upper stream have better resolution than that of Z. platypus feeding on mainly adhesive algae and some aquatic insects in slightly turbid water of mid stream.

  • When the Balise(the device to transmit information between the on-board equipment and the wayside equipment) failure occurs, it may not be able to transmit data(Telegram) required for the train running. And in some cases, it may be able to cause an accident. Therefore, both the Balise failure affecting train safety running and the hazard in accordance with Balise failure require some activities to establish them. General failure mode & hazard analysis associated with the Balise are described in UNISIG SUBSET-036 spec & UNISIG SUBSET-088 spec. And, with reference to these specifications, safety activities are being performed. In recent domestic railway, the train control system applying ETCS(European Train Control System) Level 1, 2 is being serviced and is being planned, and as part of this system, the Balise is being applied. The design-method of the Balise device for each manufacturer are different, therefore the Balise failure mode & failure rate are different, either. But the functionalities & transmission-data format(Telegram) of the Balise in ETCS Level 1, 2 application for each manufacturer are identical. Accordingly, the hazard caused by function-fail can be identical, either. In order to establish these hazard, in this paper, we analyzed the detailed functions of the Balise. And we analyzed the Balise failure types & failure effects in accordance with the detailed functions.

  • This paper introduces an improved modal pushover analysis (IMPA) which can effectively evaluate the seismic response of multi-span continuous bridge structures on the basis of modal pushover analysis (MPA). Differently from previous modal pushover analyses which cause the numerical unstability because of the occurrence of reversed relation between the pushover load and displacement, the proposed method eliminates this numerical instability and, in advance the coupling effects induced from the direct application of modal decomposition by introducing an identical stiffness ratio for each dynamic mode at the post-yielding stage together with an approximate elastic deformation. In addition to these two introductions, the use of an effective seismic load, calculated from the modal spatial force and applied as the distributed load, makes it possible to predict the dynamic responses of all bridge structures through a simpler analysis procedure than those in conventional modal pushover analyses. Finally, in order to establish validity and applicability of the proposed method, correlation studies between a rigorous nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method were conducted for multi-span continuous bridges.

  • Estimates were made of genetic parameters for average daily gain (ADG) and average backfat thickness (ABF), and of the effect of sex on estimates of variance-covariance components for average daily gain of boars (DGM) and gilts (DGF) and average bacfat thickness of boars (BFM) and gilts (BFF) by residual maximum likelihood (REML) under a bivariate animal model. Data included a total of 2233 records (757 for boars and 1476 for gilts) of the Large White breed born between 1981 and 1986 in Miyazaki and Iwate prefectures in Japan. Heritability estimates for ADG and ABF were 0.43 and 0.69, respectively, with a genetic correlation of -0.08. Heritability estimates for DGM and DGF were 0.54 and 0.46, respectively, with a genetic correlation of 0.79, including that the two traits are influenced by similar but not identical genes. Respective estimates for BFM and BFF were 0.71 and 0.72 with a genetic correlation of 0.95, indicating that identical genes influence backfat thickness in boars and gilts.
