POSITIVE SOLUTIONS FOR MULTIPOINT BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS WITH ONE-DIMENSIONAL p-LAPLACIAN OPERATOR

  • In this paper, we study the existence of positive solutions for the following nonlinear m-point boundary value problem with p-Laplacian: $\{{{{(\phi_p(u'))'\;+\;f(t,u(t))=0, \;0<t<1,} \atop u'(0)={\sum}{^{m-2}_{i=1}}\;a_iu'(\xi_i),} \atop u(1)={\sum}{^k_{i=1}}\;b_iu(\xi_i)\;-\;{\sum}{^s_{i=k+1}}\;b_iu(\xi_i)\;-\;{\sum}{^{m-2}_{i=s+1}}\;b_iu'(xi_i),}$ where ${\phi}_p(s)$ is p-Laplacian operator, i.e., ${\phi}_p(s)=\mid s\mid^{p-2}s$, p>1, ${\phi}_q\;=\;({\phi}_p)^{-1}$, $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=1$, $1\;{\leq}\;k\;{\leq}\;s\;{\leq}m\;-\;2$, $b_i\;{\in}\;(0,+{\infty})$ with $0\;<\;{\sum}{^k_{k=1}}\;b_i\;-\;{\sum}{^s_{i=k+1}}\;b_i\;<\;1$, $0\;<\;{\sum}{^{m-2}_{i=1}}\la_i\;<\;1$, $0\;<\;{\xi}_1\;<\;{\xi}_2\;<\;{\cdots}\;<\;{\xi}_{m-2}\;<\;1$, $f\;{\in}\;C([0,\;1]\;{\times}\;[0,\;+{\infty}),\;[0,\;+{\infty}))$. We show that there exists one or two positive solutions by using fixed-point theorem for operator on a cone. The conclusions in this paper essentially extend and improve the known results.

  • Recently, copy number variations (CNV) of genes or genomic segments have been intensively studied and various analysis methods have been developed. In this study, quantitative oligonucleotide ligation assay (qOLA) was applied to investigate CNV of KIT gene in the Landrace breed. A combined assay using qOLA and pyrosequencing, 6 genotype classes, I1/I1 or I3/i (IBe), I1/I2 or I3/IP, I1/I3, I1/IP or I2/i (IBe), I2/I2and I2/IP, were identified from 44 Landrace pigs. Genotype assignment using grouping features of measurements on a scatter plot showed 100% agreement with those using a statistical assignment by PROC FASTCLUS procedure implemented in the SAS package. Two versions (3100 and 3130) of ABI sequencers gave the same genotyping results, indicating there was no influence on qOLA by different versions of instrument, however, the means of standard deviation and coefficient of variation from the qOLA on a ABI 3130 (2.33 and 4.10) was lower than those from the qOLA on a ABI 3100 (2.67 and 4.81). Effect of proteinase K treatment on the PCR product followed by qOLA was very clear because noise peaks were disappeared and the observed ration fit better to the reference ratio corresponding to each genotype.

  • The generation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from patients' somatic cells provides a new paradigm for studying human genetic diseases. Human iPSCs which have similar properties of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) provide a powerful platform to recapitulate the disease-specific cell types by using various differentiation techniques. This promising technology has being realized the possibility to explore pathophysiology of many human genetic diseases at the molecular and cellular levels. Furthermore, disease-specific human iPSCs can also be used for patient-based drug screening and new drug discovery at the stage of the pre-clinical test in vitro. In this review, we summarized the concept and history of cellular reprogramming or iPSC generation and highlight recent progresses for disease modeling using patient-specific iPSCs.

  • Let $\{X_{ni},\;1{\leq}i{\leq}n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ be a sequence of LNQD which are dominated randomly by another random variable X. We obtain the complete convergence and almost sure convergence of weighted sums ${\sum}^n_{i=1}a_{ni}X_{ni}$ for LNQD by using a new exponential inequality, where $\{a_{ni},\;1{\leq}i{\leq}n,\;n{\geq}1\}$ is an array of constants. As corollary, the results of some authors are extended from i.i.d. case to not necessarily identically LNQD case.

Influence of crown-to-implant ratio on periimplant marginal bone loss in the posterior region: a five-year retrospective study

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio on the change in marginal bone level around the implant and to determine the site-related factors influencing the relationship between the C/I ratio and periimplant marginal bone loss. Methods: A total of 259 implants from 175 patients were evaluated at a mean follow-up of five years. Implants were divided into two groups according to their C/I ratios: ${\leq}$ 1, and >1. Site-related factors having an influence on the relationship between C/I ratio and periimplant marginal bone loss were analyzed according to the implant location, implant diameter, implant manufacturer, prosthesis type, and guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedure. Results: It was found that 1) implants with a C/I ratio below 1 exhibited greater periimplant marginal bone loss than implants with a C/I ratio more than 1, 2) site-related factors had an effect on periimplant marginal bone loss, except for the implant system used, 3) the C/I ratio was the factor having more dominant influence on periimplant marginal bone loss, compared with implant diameter, prosthesis type, implant location, and GBR procedure, 4) implants with a C/I ratio below 1 showed greater periimplant marginal bone loss than implants with a C/I ratio greater than 1 in the maxilla, but not in the mandible, 5) and periimplant marginal bone loss was more affected by the implant system than the C/I ratio. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, implants with a higher C/I ratio exhibited less marginal bone loss than implants with a lower C/I ratio in the posterior regions. The C/I ratio was a more dominant factor affecting periimplant marginal bone loss in the maxilla than the mandible. Meanwhile, the implant system was a more dominant factor influencing periimplant marginal bone loss than the C/I ratio.

Correlation of Cord Serum Adiponectin and IGF-I with Fetal Growth in Healthy Term Neonates (제대혈 Adiponectin과 IGF-I이 태아성장에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between cord serum adiponectin (APN) and IGF-I concentrations and fetal growth. Methods : Umbilical cord serum APN and IGF-I concentrations were measured in healthy term singleton deliveries (n=72). The association of cord serum APN and IGF-I concentrations was evaluated in relation to birth weight, height, head circumference, gender, ponderal index, placental weight, feto-placental (F/P) weight ratio, maternal weight gain, and maternal body mass index (BMI). Results : The mean cord serum APN was 29.2${\pm}$10.46 $\mu$g/mL. The cord serum APN and birth weight demonstrated a bell-shape relationship. The cord serum APN concentration was higher in females than males (P=0.001). The cord serum APN was negatively correlated with maternal BMI (r=-0.301, P=0.027), but the mean cord serum APN concentration was not correlated with birth height, birth head circumference, ponderal index, placental weight, F/P ratio, or maternal weight gain. The mean cord serum concentrations of IGF-I was 51.26${\pm}$21.54 ng/mL. The cord serum IGF-I concentration was positively correlated with birth weight (r=0.312, P=0.009), but not birth height, ponderal index, placental weight, F/P weight ratio, or maternal BMI. Conclusion : APN demonstrated a bell-shaped relationship with birth weight in healthy term infants. IGF-I was highly correlated with fetal growth, especially birth weight.

Response of Muscle Protein Synthesis to the Infusion of Insulin-like Growth Factor-I and Fasting in Young Chickens

  • In order to elucidate the physiological function of circulating IGF-I on muscle protein synthesis in the chicken under malnutritional conditions, we administrated recombinant chicken IGF-I using a osmotic mini pump to fasted young chickens and measured the rate of muscle protein synthesis and plasma metabolite. The pumps delivered IGF-I at the rate of $22{\mu}g/d\{300{\mu}g{\cdot}(kg\;body\;weight{\cdot}d)^{-1}\}$. Fractional rate of protein synthesis in the muscle was measured using a large dose injection of L-[$2,6-^3H$]phenylalanine. Constant infusion of chicken IGF-I did not affect plasma glucose level. Significant interaction between dietary treatment and IGF-I infusion was observed in plasma NEFA and total cholesterol concentrations. When chicks were fasted, IGF-I infusion decreased plasma NEFA and total cholesterol concentrations. On the other hand, IGF-I administration did not affect plasma levels of both metabolites. Fasting reduced plasma triglyceride concentration significantly. IGF-I infusion also decreased the level of plasma triglyceride. Plasma IGF-I concentration of young chickens was halved by fasting for 1 d. IGF-I infusion using an osmotic minipump for 1 d increased plasma IGF-I concentration in fasted chicks to the level of fed chicks. Fasting decreased body weight and the loss of body weight was significantly ameliorated by IGF-I infusion. There was a significant interaction between dietary treatment and IGF-I infusion in the fractional rate of breast muscle protein synthesis. There was no effect of IGF-I infusion on muscle protein synthesis in fed chicks. Muscle protein synthesis reduced by fasting was ameliorated by IGF-I infusion, but did not reach to the level of fed control. Muscle weight of fasted chicks infused with IGF-I was similar to fasted birds without IGF-I infusion, which suggests that muscle protein degradation would be increased by IGF-I infusion as well as protein synthesis in fasted chicks.

  • Interstrain polymorphisms of isoenzyme profiles and mitochondrial (Mt) DNA fingerprints were observed among seven strains of Acnnthnmoeba isolated from different sources and morphologically assigned to A. polvphngn. Mt DNA ringerprints by eight restriction endonucleases (Bgl II, Sca I, Cla I, EcoR I, Xbo I, Kpn I, Sal I, and Sst I) revealed considerable interstrain polymorphisms . Isoenzyme profiles revealed considerable interstrain polymorphisms for acid phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, and glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase while those for glucose phosphate isomerase , leucine aminopeptidase , and malate dehydrogenase showed similarity Despite of the interstrain polymorphisms, the isoengyme profiles and Mt DNA fingerprints of the strain Ap were found to be identical with those of the strain .tones . Mt DNA fingerprinting was found to be highly applicable for the strain identification, characterization, and differentiation.
