Performance analysis of local exit for distributed deep neural networks over cloud and edge computing

  • In edge computing, most procedures, including data collection, data processing, and service provision, are handled at edge nodes and not in the central cloud. This decreases the processing burden on the central cloud, enabling fast responses to end-device service requests in addition to reducing bandwidth consumption. However, edge nodes have restricted computing, storage, and energy resources to support computation-intensive tasks such as processing deep neural network (DNN) inference. In this study, we analyze the effect of models with single and multiple local exits on DNN inference in an edge-computing environment. Our test results show that a single-exit model performs better with respect to the number of local exited samples, inference accuracy, and inference latency than a multi-exit model at all exit points. These results signify that higher accuracy can be achieved with less computation when a single-exit model is adopted. In edge computing infrastructure, it is therefore more efficient to adopt a DNN model with only one or a few exit points to provide a fast and reliable inference service.

λ/64-spaced compact ESPAR antenna via analog RF switches for a single RF chain MIMO system

  • In this study, an electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) antenna via analog radio frequency (RF) switches for a single RF chain MIMO system is presented. The proposed antenna elements are spaced at ${\lambda}/64$, and the antenna size is miniaturized via a dielectric radome. The optimum reactance load value is calculated via the beamforming load search algorithm. A switch simplifies the design and implementation of the reactance loads and does not require additional complex antenna matching circuits. The measured impedance bandwidth of the proposed ESPAR antenna is 1,500 MHz (1.75 GHz-3.25 GHz). The proposed antenna exhibits a beam pattern that is reconfigurable at 2.48 GHz due to changes in the reactance value, and the measured peak antenna gain is 4.8 dBi. The reception performance is measured by using a $4{\times}4$ BPSK signal. The measured average SNR is 17 dB when using the proposed ESPAR antenna as a transmitter, and the average SNR is 16.7 dB when using a four-conventional monopole antenna.

  • Recently, interactive media which maximizes audience engagement by making the audience appeal on a stage in digital media environment has been distributed more widely. In fact, there has been active movement to develop and promote a new participatory media genre with higher immersion by applying this kind of interactive media concept to advertisement, film, game and e-learning. In the conventional interactive media, digital media had to be enjoyed in particular environment where diverse sensors were installed or through a certain device to recognize a user's motion and voice. This study attempted to design and implement an image creation system which ensures interactions between a user and media in popular distribution-enabled web environment and through PC and smart devices to minimize the image producer-user constraints.

  • Major global powers are investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and hyper-connected networks, demonstrating their crucial role in future warfare. To advance and utilize AI in national defense, it is essential to have policy support at the governmental or national level. This includes establishing a research and development infrastructure, creating a common development environment, and fostering AI expertise through education and training programs. To achieve advancements in hyper-connected networks, it is essential to establish a foundation for a robust and resilient infrastructure by comprehensively building integrated satellite, aerial, and ground networks, along with developing 5G & edge computing and low-orbit satellite communication technologies. This multi-faceted approach will ensure the successful integration of AI and hyper-connected networks, strengthening national defense and positioning nations at the forefront of technological advancements in warfare.

IoT의 과거, 현재 그리고 미래 (Past, Present, and Future of IoT)

  • In the past, the Internet connected people together; recently, however it has been extended to the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing all things in the physical world to be connected. We call a new society in which everything is connected through IoT a 'hyper-connected society'. IoT for a hyper-connected society is more than just connecting things to the Internet, it is an infrastructure providing intelligent services without human intervention by connecting things to the Internet using sensors and communication functions, collecting data from connected things, and analyzing and predicting information. Therefore, IoT is a convergence technology that includes not only sensors and communication networks but also big data and AI. This paper examines the short history of IoT, reviews its current trends, and finally, discusses its future direction.

Performance analysis of large-scale MIMO system for wireless backhaul network

  • In this paper, we present a performance analysis of large-scale multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems for wireless backhaul networks. We focus on fully connected N nodes in a wireless meshed and multi-hop network topology. We also consider a large number of antennas at both the receiver and transmitter. We investigate the transmission schemes to support fully connected N nodes for half-duplex and full-duplex transmission, analyze the achievable ergodic sum rate among N nodes, and propose a closed-form expression of the achievable ergodic sum rate for each scheme. Furthermore, we present numerical evaluation results and compare the resuts with closed-form expressions.

  • 음향신호기는 횡단보도에 있는 보행신호등의 정보를 음향과 음성으로 알려주는 장치로써, 시각장애인에게 횡단보도의 이름, 음향신호기의 신호 상태 및 횡단보도의 보행 방향 정보를 제공한다. 시각장애인들은 음향신호기를 편리하게 동작시키기 위하여 358.5MHz 무선 리모컨으로 음향신호기를 동작시키고, 횡단보도를 건너가게 된다. 현재의 음향신호기는 무선 리모컨으로부터 동작 신호 수신만 가능하다. 따라서, 교차로 횡단보도와 같이 다수의 음향신호기가 설치된 교차로에서 기존의 음향신호기는 무선 리모컨의 통신 반경에 있는 음향신호기는 모두 동시에 작동하는 문제점이 있으며, 이는 시각장애인에게 혼란을 줄 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 블루투스를 이용하여 스마트폰으로 동작시킬 수 있는 양방향 통신 지원 BLE 기반 음향신호기를 제안한다. 제안하는 시스템은 상기의 문제점을 극복할 수 있으며, 신호 정보 등을 부가정보를 받을 수 있어, 횡단보도 횡단시 보다 편리하게 이용할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

혼돈신호를 이용한 IoT의 MQTT 보안 프로토콜 설계 (IoT MQTT Security Protocol Design Using Chaotic Signals)

  • 정보통신과 산업기술의 급속한 발전으로 인간과 모든 프로그램 그리고 사물들이 인터넷을 통해 연결되는 초연결사회(hyper-connected society)가 구현되고 있다. 초연결사회를 구현하기 위한 정보의 수집은 사물과 사물 그리고 사물과 인간을 연결하는 사물인터넷(IoT: Internet of Thing)이 그 역할을 담당하고 있다. (MQTT: Message Queuing Telemetry Transport)는 이런 사물인터넷의 제약된 통신환경에 최적화되어 개발된 푸시 기술(push technology) 기반의 경량 메시지 전송 프로토콜이다. 초연결사회를 지향하면서 IoT가 담고 있는 정보는 센서의 환경정보에서 이제는 사람의 질병과 건강관리까지 담당하는 광범위한 정보가 되었다. 이런 MQTT에 대한 보안 문제는 환경정보 유출뿐만 아니라 개인의 정보 침해에까지 이르게 되었다. 우리는 이런 MQTT의 보안의 문제점을 해결하기 위해 혼돈계의 초기치 민감성, 유사 난수성을 무결성과 기밀성에 적용하여 새로운 보안 MQTT통신방법을 설계하였다. 우리가 설계한 혼돈계를 이용한 암호화 방법은 구조가 간단하고 계산량이 적기 때문에 IoT와 같은 제한된 통신환경에 적합한 통신방법이라고 생각된다.

초연결사회와 스마트기술에 따른 4차산업혁명의 정책방향 (Directions for Policy to the Fourth Industrial Revolution based on Hyper-Connected Society and Smart Technology)

  • 본 연구는 국내·외적으로 초연결사회와 스마트 기술이 우리나라에서 구현성의 정도를 현재로서는 간과할 수 없는 점 때문에 현재까지의 동향을 살펴보고 미래 정책방향을 선제적으로 모색해 보는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 연구의 방법은 문헌조사 및 주요선행연구 비교를 통해 본 연구와의 차별화에 중점을 두었다. 연구 결과, 초연결사회와 스마트 기술에 따른 우리나라의 4차산업혁명시대에는 데이터 보안·유지관리, 사용자 및 이용자의 프라이버시 강화, 초고령사회 진입에 대비한 관련 정책방향으로 파악되었다. 연구 한계점으로는 계량적, 정량적 방법을 통해 연구분석에 접근해야 하나 자료구득의 어려움, 동향분석을 통한 통계적 정량화의 기술적 한계가 나타났다. 향후 후속연구에서 보완할 필요가 있다.

Information leakage in bi-directional IFD communication system with simultaneously transmitted jamming sequence

  • In this paper, we describe a simultaneously transmitted jamming (ST-jamming) for bi-directional in-band full-duplex (IFD) system to improve information security at the physical layer. By exploiting ST-jamming, each legitimate user transmits data samples and jamming samples together in one orthogonal frequency division multiplexing symbol according to given traffic asymmetry. Regardless of the traffic difference in both directions in IFD communication, eavesdropping of confidential information is prevented in both directions simultaneously without the loss of data rate. We first propose an encoding scheme and the corresponding decoding scheme for ST-jamming to be used by the legitimate users. In addition, we study a transceiver structure of the legitimate users including a baseband modem uniquely designed for the use of ST-jamming. The leakage of confidential information at an eavesdropper is then quantified by studying the mutual information between the confidential transmit signals and the received signals of the eavesdropper. Simulation results show that the proposed ST-jamming significantly reduces the leakage of legitimate information at the eavesdropper.
