The effect of heaving motion of multiple wave energy converters installed on a floating platform on global performance

  • Targeting a floating wave and offshore wind hybrid power generation system (FWWHybrid) designed in the Republic of Korea, this study examines the impact of the interaction, with multiple wave energy converters (WECs) placed on the platform, on platform motion. To investigate how the motion of WECs affects the behavior of the FWWHybrid platform, it was numerically compared with a scenario involving a 'single-body' system, where multiple WECs are constrained to the platform. In the case of FWWHybrid, because the platform and multiple WECs move in response to waves simultaneously as a 'multi-body' system, hydrodynamic interactions between these entities come into play. Additionally, the power take-off (PTO) mechanism between the platform and individual WECs is introduced for power production. First, the hydrostatic/dynamic coefficients required for numerical analysis were calculated in the frequency domain and then used in the time domain analysis. These simulations are performed using the extended HARP/CHARM3D code developed from previous studies. By conducting regular wave simulations, the response amplitude operator (RAO) for the platform of both single-body and multi-body scenarios was derived and subsequently compared. Next, to ascertain the difference in response in the real sea environment, this study also includes an analysis of irregular waves. As the floating body maintains its position through connection to a catenary mooring line, the impact of the slowly varying wave drift load cannot be disregarded. To assess the influence of the 2nd-order wave exciting load, irregular wave simulations were conducted, dividing them into cases where it was not considered and cases where it was included. The analysis of multi-degree-of-freedom behavior confirmed that the action of multiple WECs had a substantial impact on the platform's response.

Measurement of Five DOF Motion Errors in the Ultra Precision Feed Tables (초정밀 이송테이블의 5 자유도 운동오차 측정)

  • Measurement of five DOF motion errors in a ultra precision feed table was attempted in this study. Yaw and pitch error were measured by using a laser interferometer and roll error was measured by using the reversal method. Linear motion errors in the vertical and horizontal directions were measured by using the sequential two point method. In this case, influence of angular motion errors was compensated by using the previously measured ones by the laser interferometer and the reversal method. The capacitive type sensors and an optical straight edge were used in the reversal method and the sequential two point method. Influence of thermal deformation on sensor jig was investgated and minimized by the periodic measurement according to the variation of room temperature. Deviation of gain between sensors was also compensated using the step response data. 5 DOF motion errors of a hydrostatic table driven by the linear motor werer tested using the measurement method. In the horizontal direction, measuring accuracies for the linear and angular motion were within ${\pm}0.02\;{\mu}m$ and ${\pm}0.04$ arcsec, respectively. In the vertical direction, they were within ${\pm}0.02{\mu}m$ and ${\pm}0.05$ arcsec. From these results, it was found that the introduced measurement method was very effective to measure 5 DOF motion errors of the ultra precision feed tables.

Displacement Error Estimation of a High-Precision Large-Surface Micro-Grooving Machine Based on Experimental Design Method and Finite Element Analysis (실험계획법과 유한 요소해석을 이용한 초정밀 대면적 미세 그루빙 머신의 변위 오차 예측)

  • In this study, to minimize trial and error in the design and manufacturing processes of a high-precision large-surface micro-grooving machine which is able to fabricate the molds for 42 inch LCD light guide panels, the effects of the structural deformation of the micro-grooving machine according to the positions of the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis feed systems were examined on the tool tip displacement errors associated with the machining accuracy. The virtual prototype (finite element model) of the micro-grooving machine was constructed to include the joint stiffnesses of the hydrostatic bearings, hydrostatic guideways and linear motors, and then the tool tip displacement errors were measured from the virtual prototype. Especially, to establish the prediction model of the tool tip displacement errors, which was constructed using the positions of the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis feed systems as independent variables, the response surface method based on the central composite design was introduced. The reliability of the prediction model was verified by the fact that the tool tip displacement errors obtained from the prediction model coincided well those measured from the virtual prototype. And the causes of the tool tip displacement errors were identified through the analysis of interactions between the positions of the X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis feed systems.

A Review on the Vertical Coordinate Systems used in Oceanic and Atmospheric Circulation Numerical Model (해양 및 대기 순환 수치모델에 사용하는 연직 좌표계에 대한 고찰)

  • In a numerical method for the study of the circulation model, various vertical coordinate systems are used to simulate the physical response of the ocean and atmosphere to the increasing greenhouse gas emission. In this study, four types of vertical coordinate systems frequently used in oceanic and atmospheric circulation numerical models, i.e., height, general, pressure, and normalized vertical coordinate systems, respectively are introduced. Finally, the hydrostatic pressure equation, vertical velocity, equation of horizontal motion, and continuity equation expressed in a vertical coordinate system were introduced, and the pros and cons of the vertical coordinate system were summarized to promote the accuracy of numerical model development.

  • The structural response characteristics of Tension leg platforms(TLPs) in waves are examined for presenting the basic data for structural design of TLPs. The numerical approach is based on a combination of the three dimensional source distribution method and the structural response analysis method, in which the superstructure of TLP is assumed to be flexible instead of rigid. Hydrodynamic and hydrostatic forces on the submerged surface of a TLP have been accurately calculated by excluding the assumption of the slender body theory. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, and the structural damping are included in structural analysis. The mooring forces are estimated as the sum of pretension of tendons and variational tension due to longitudinal displacements. Stiffness matrices of elastic beam elements connecting nodes are formulated by ordinary method of three dimensional frame analysis. The equation of motion about the whole structure is obtained by the sum of forces and moments acting on each nodes.

  • There are several different types of continuously variable transmission(CVT) such as toroidal drive, belt drive, hydrostatic drive, hydro-mechanical drive. The toroidal CVT is an alternative to the manual transmission, HST, power-shift gear trans-missions or other CVTs. The driver of the CVT tractor doesn't have to operate a shia lever since the CVT controller automatically controls the speed of tractor. Thus, it is much easier to operate the CVT tractor. The fuel efficiency of CVT tractor can be increased since the controller responds quickly to the change in external load on the wheel during field operation. This study was conducted to develop the hardwares and softwares for the toroidal CVT controller which control the variator and the range clutches. The hardware consisted of a measurement system, hydraulic system and computer. And the PID controller was developed using the simulation model of the CVT control system. Through the simulation, the control coefficients for the PID controller were selected. Finally, the performance of the CVT control system was evaluated by step response test and torque response test. The settling time of the CVT control system appeared to be fast enough for field operations.

Modelization and Optimization of Quality Characteristics of Pork Treated Various Hydrostatic Pressure Conditions

  • In this study, the effects of physical parameters (30-270 MPa of pressure, 3-57 min of time, and 1-$49^{\circ}C$ of temperature) on pork quality were investigated. Response surface methodology was used in order to monitor and model the changes in pork quality under varied pressure conditions. As quality characteristics, shear force, water holding capacity (WHC) and the CIE color of pork were measured, and optimum pressure conditions were evaluated by statistical modeling. Pressure improved the WHC of pork at relatively low temperature ($<25^{\circ}C$); however, the opposite occurred with increasing temperature. Although pressure and temperature affected the tenderness of the meat, interaction effects among variations were not observed. At pressure levels higher than 200 MPa, the color of pork differed markedly from that of the untreated controls. In particular, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed marked evidence of myosin denaturation. The present study demonstrates that pork quality varies depending on pressure conditions.

Changes in Microbial and Physicochemical Properties of Single-Brewed Makgeolli by High Hydrostatic Pressure Treatment during Fermentation (단양주 방법으로 제조된 막걸리의 발효과정 중 초고압 처리에 의한 미생물적 및 이화학적 특성 변화)

  • This study was conducted to examine changes in the microbial and physicochemical properties of single-brewed Makgeolli in response to high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment during various fermentation stages. HHP was applied in 2-day intervals at 400 MPa for 5 min during fermentation at $25^{\circ}C$. As a result, lactic acid bacteria showed 5~6 log reduction and reappeared at approximately 3~6 log cfu/mL as fermentation proceeded. Yeast also showed 5~6 log reduction but did not reappear during later fermentation period. HPP treatment did not result in any alcohol production on day 0 and 2. However, HPP treatment altered the pH and titratable acidity by reducing the number of microorganism. Reducing sugar contents of the samples increased continuously to 8.99% in 0 day treated sample and 5.01% in 2 day treated sample, whereas untreated Makgeolli contained 1.53% reducing sugars on 6 day due to alcohol conversion by yeast. Based on these results, HPP treatment during various fermentation stages altered the physicochemical properties of Makgeolli by changing the microbial community.

Efficiency of stiffening plates in fabricated concrete-filled tubes under monotonic compression

  • Concrete-filled tubes (CFT), formed by an outer steel tube filled with plain or reinforced concrete inside, have been increasingly used these recent decades as columns or beam-columns, especially for tall buildings in seismic areas due to their excellent structural response. This improved behavior is derived from the effect of confinement provided by the tube, since the compressive strength of concrete increases when being subjected to hydrostatic pressure. In circular CFTs under compression, the whole tube is uniformly tensioned due to the radial expansion of concrete. Contrarily, in rectangular and square-shaped CFTs, the lateral flanges become subjected to in-plane bending derived from this volumetric expansion, and this fact implies a reduction of the confinement effect of the core. This study presents a numerical analysis of different configurations of CFT stub columns with inner stiffening plates, limited to the study of the influence of these plates on the compressive behavior without eccentricity. The final purpose is to evaluate the efficiency in terms of strength and ductility of introducing stiffeners into circular and square CFT sections under large deformation axial loading.

Lifting Analysis Considering Three Dimensional Dynamic Responses of a Boom based on Finite Element Formulation (유한요소 붐 모델의 3차원 동적 거동을 고려한 리프팅 해석)

  • In this paper, the lifting analysis of a floating crane with a shipbuilding block is performed. Since floating cranes are operated in ocean waves, six degree-of-freedom motions are considered in the dynamic equations of motions of the floating crane and the block. The boom of the floating crane is considered as an elastic body in the analysis, and is modeled as three dimensional beam based on the finite element formulation. The hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces by a regular wave are considered as external forces. By solving the equations of motions numerically, the dynamic responses of the floating crane and the block are simulated. The simulation results with different wave directions are compared and the conditions which cause maximum responses are discussed.
