The combustion characteristics of methane/hydrogen pre-mixed flame have been investigated with swirl stabilized flame in a laboratory-scale pre-mixed combustor with constant heat load of 5.81 kW. Hydrogen/methane fuel and air were mixed in a pre-mixer and introduced to the combustor through a burner nozzle with different degrees of swirl angle. The effects of hydrogen addition and swirl intensity on the combustion characteristics of pre-mixed methane flames were examined using particle image velocimetry (PIV), micro-thermocouples, various optical interference filters and gas analyzers to provide information about flow velocity, temperature distributions, and species concentrations of the reaction field. The results show that higher swirl intensity creates more recirculation flow, which reduces the temperature of the reaction zone and, consequently, reduces the thermal NO production. The distributions of flame radicals (OH, CH, C2) are dependent more on the swirl intensity than the percentage of hydrogen added to methane fuel. The NO concentration at the upper part of the reaction zone is increased with an increase in hydrogen content in the fuel mixture because higher combustibility of hydrogen assists to promote faster chemical reaction, enabling more expansion of the gases at the upper part of the reaction zone, which reduces the recirculation flow. The CO concentration in the reaction zone is reduced with an increase in hydrogen content because the amount of C content is relatively decreased.

Hydrogen production can be classified based on the energy source, primary reactor type, and whether or not it emits carbon dioxide. Utilizing color representation proves to be an effective means of expressing these distinctive characteristics. Among the various clean hydrogen production techniques, there has been a growing interest in turquoise hydrogen production, which involves the decomposition of methane or other fossil fuels. This method offers advantages in terms of large-scale production and cost reduction through the sale of solid-carbon byproduct. In this study, an extensive literature review was conducted to select and analyze several promising candidates for turquoise hydrogen production processes. The efficiency and economics of these processes were evaluated using stream data reported in the literature sources. The findings indicate that the levelized cost of hydrogen production (LCOH) is significantly influenced by the sales of byproducts, specifically the solid-carbon and carbon monoxide byproducts.

Interest in hydrogen productions that do not emit carbon dioxide and can produce hydrogen at a low price is increasing. Reforming and electrolysis are widely used, but they have limitations, such as carbon dioxide problems and costs. The methane can be decomposed as hydrogen and solid carbon without carbon dioxide emission at high temperatures. In this research, the methane pyrolysis experiment was conducted at 1,200℃ and 1,400℃ in a ceramic tube. The composition of the produced gas was measured by gas chromatography before carbon blocked the tube. The methane conversion rate and hydrogen selectivity were calculated based on the results. The hydrogen selectivity was derived as 60% and 55% at the highest point at 1,200℃ and 1,400℃, respectively. The produced solid carbon was expected to be carbon black and was analyzed using scanning electron microscope.
Thermochemical cycles have been predominantly used for energy transformation from heat to stored chemical free energy in the form of hydrogen. The thermochemical cycle based on uranium (UTC), proposed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been considered as a better alternative compared to other thermochemical cycles mainly due to its safety and high efficiency. UTC process includes three steps, in which only the first step is unique. Hydrogen production apparatus with hectogram reactants was designed in this study. The results showed that high yield hydrogen was obtained, which was determined by drainage method. The results also indicated that the chemical conversion rate of hydrogen production was in direct proportion to the mass of $Na_2CO_3$, while the solid product was $Na_2UO_4$, instead of $Na_2U_2O_7$. Nevertheless the thermochemical cycle used for hydrogen generation can be closed, and chemical compounds used in these processes can also be recycled. So the cycle with $Na_2UO_4$ as its first reaction product has an advantage over the proposed UTC process, attributed to the fast reaction rate and high hydrogen yield in the first reaction step.

Hydrogen production using solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) is a promising technology because of its efficiency, cleanness, and scalability. Especially, high-power SOEC system has received a lot of attention from researchers. This study compared and analyzed the low-power and high-power SOEC system in term of economic. By using revenue requirement method, levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) was calculated for comparison. In addition, the sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the dependence of hydrogen cost on input variables. The results indicated that high-power SOEC system is superior to a low-power SOEC system. In the capital cost, the stack cost is dominant in both systems, but the electricity cost is the most contributed factor to the hydrogen cost. If the high-power SOEC system combines with a nuclear power plant, the hydrogen cost can reach 3.65 $/kg when the electricity cost is 3.28 ¢/kWh and the stack cost is assumed to be 574 $/kW.

Porous Co-P catalysts electroplated on Cu in chloride based solution with an addition of $NaH_2PO_2$ and glycine were developed for hydrogen generation from alkaline $NaBH_4$ solution. The microstructures of the Co-P catalysts and their hydrogen generation properties were analyzed as a function of cathodic current density and plating time during the electrodeposition. Amorphous Co-P electrodeposits with porous structure was formed on Cu at cathodic current density of $0.05\;A/cm^2$, and showed very high hydrogen generation rate in alkaline $NaBH_4$ solution due to an increase in the surface area of the catalyst as well as the catalytic activity. The Co-P catalyst, which was obtained at cathodic current density of $0.05\;A/cm^2$ for 5 min, exhibited the best hydrogen generation rate of 2290 ml/min.g-catalyst in 1 wt. % NaOH+10 wt. % $NaBH_4$ solution at $30^{\circ}C$.

Hydrogen can be produced by reforming reaction of natural gas (NG) and biogas, or by water electrolysis. In this study, hydrogen production through water-electrolysis needs superheated steam above $700^{\circ}C$ for high efficiency. The production method of hydrogen like this was recommended for the 4-type processes for superheated steam ($700^{\circ}C$, 3 atm) by Bio-SRF combustion furnace. The 4-type processes to produce superheated steam at $700^{\circ}C$ from the heat source of SRF combustion furnace was simulated using PRO II. The optimum process was selected through exergy analysis. The difference of process 1 and 2 is to the order of depressure and heating process to change $180^{\circ}C$ and 7 atm to $700^{\circ}C$ and 3 atm. Process 3 and 4 is to utilize 25% of steam to generate superheated steam and remaining to use for the power generation by steam generator.
Proton-conducting perovskite ceramic materials are highly promising for solid electrolytes as well as catalysts at high temperatures. Therefore, they possess an outstanding potential for the membrane reactor in which both reaction and separation occur at a same time. Especially, in the case of hydrogen production catalyst, hydrogen separation, and the membrane reactor coupled with catalyst and separation, extensive results have been reported on the effect of the dopant in the solid electrolytes, temperature, and composition of reactants on the performance. In this review, the recent research trend on the application of proton-conducting ceramic materials to hydrogen production catalyst, hydrogen separation, and membrane reactor is surveyed. Moreover, the potential application and prospect of these materials to the next-generation hydrogen production and separation is discussed.
Nuclear energy plays an important role in world energy production by supplying 6% of the world's current total electricity production. However, 86% of the energy consumed worldwide to produce industrial process heat, to generate electricity and to power the transportation sector still originates in fossil fuels. To cope with dwindling fossil fuels and climate change, it is clear that a clean alternative energy that can replace fossil fuels in these sectors is urgently required. Clean hydrogen energy is one such alternative. Clean hydrogen can play an important role not only in synthetic fuel production but also through powering fuel cells in the anticipated hydrogen economy. With the introduction of the high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) that can produce nuclear heat up to $950^{\circ}C$ without greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power is poised to broaden its mission beyond electricity generation to the provision of nuclear process heat and the massive production of hydrogen. In this paper, the features and potential of the HTGR as the energy source of the future are addressed. Perspectives on nuclear heat and hydrogen applications using the HTGR are discussed.
Operation conditions for the generation of an HF laser driven by fluorine-hydrogen combustion were discussed by mc:asuring the intensities of excited HF* molecules. Optimum injection quantities of fluorine gas for the generation of fluorine atoms was two times the injection mole number of hydrogen fuel. Slit nozzles with two dimensional configuration were used for the production of excited HF* molecules. When the injection mole number of secondary hydrogen gas is 1.3 times the injection mole number of fluorine gas, the fluorescence intensities of excited HF* molecules show maximum values. alues.
