  • The performance characteristics of the polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) were investigated under various humidification conditions at steady-state and transient conditions. The PEFC studied in this study was characterized by I-V curves in potentiostatic mode. The I-V curves representing steady-state performance were obtained from OCV to 0.25V, and the dynamic performance responses were obtained at some points of voltages. The anodic external humidification was applied and the humidity was controlled from 20% to 100%. The effects of relative humidity of hydrogen were measured with the dry air at the cathode. At high voltage region, the performance at high temperature was higher, but at low voltage region, low temperature condition showed the higher performance. The dynamic responses were observed at the instant when the voltage of the PEFC was changed. It was observed that the performance reached steady-state earlier with the increase of temperature.

  • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells can convert solar energy, the largest potential source of renewable energy, into hydrogen fuel which can be stored, transported, and used on demand. In terms of cost competitiveness compared with fossil fuels, however, both photocatalytic efficiency and cost-effectiveness must be achieved simultaneously. Improvement of cost-effective, scalable, versatile, and eco-friendly fabrication methods has emerged as an urgent mission for PEC cells, and solution-based fabrication methods could be capable of meeting these demands. Herein, we review recent challenges for various nanostructured oxide photoelectrodes fabricated by solution-based processes. Hematite, tungsten oxide, bismuth vanadate, titanium oxide, and copper oxides are the main oxides focused on, and various strategies have been attempted with respect to these photocatalyst materials. The effects of nanostructuring, heterojunctions, and co-catalyst loading on the surface are discussed. Our review introduces notable solution-based processes for water splitting photoelectrodes and gives an outlook on eco-friendly and cost-effective approaches to solar fuel generation and innovative artificial photosynthesis technologies.

  • For both oxygen reduction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) of proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), alloying Pt with another transition metal usually results in a higher activity relative to pure Pt, mainly due to electronic modification of Pt and bifunctional behaviour of alloy surface for ORR and HOR, respectively. However, activity and stability are closely related to the preparation of alloy nanoparticles. Preparation conditions of alloy nanoparticles have strong influence on surface composition, oxidation state, nanoparticle size, shape, and contamination, which result from a large difference in redox priority of metal precursors, intrinsic properties of metals, increasedreactivity of nanocrystallites, and interactions with constituents for the synthesis such as solvent, stabilizer, and reducing agent, etc. Carbon-supported Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles were prepared by the borohydride reduction method in anhydrous solvent. Pt-Ru alloy nanoparticles supported on carbon black were also prepared by the similar synthetic method to that of Pt-Ni. Since electrocatalytic reactions are strongly dependent on the surface structure of metal catalysts, the atom-leveled design of the surface structure plays a significant role in a high catalytic activity and the utilization of electrocatalysts. Therefore, surface-modified electrocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their unique structure and new electronic and electrocatalytic properties. The carbon-supported Au and Pd nanoparticles were adapted as the substrate and the successive reduction process was used for depositing Pt and PtM (M=Ru, Pd, and Rh) bimetallic elements on the surface of Au and Pd nanoparticles. Distinct features of the overlayers for electrocatalytic activities including methanol oxidation, formic acid oxidation, and oxygen reduction were investigated.

  • PdO-doped $BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_{3-\delta}$ (BZPY) proton conductors have been proposed as applicable for intermediate temperature electrolytes for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) because the PdO doping is effective for improving the proton conductivity of $BaZr_{0.85}Y_{0.15}O_{3-\delta}$ (BZY) with high affinity for hydrogen. In order to further improve the conductivity of BZPY, two-phase composite electrolytes consisting of a BZPY and molten carbonate were designed. Dense BZPY-based composite electrolytes were fabricated after sintering at $670^{\circ}C$ for 4 h, since molten carbonates fill the grain boundary of the porous BZPY matrix. Furthermore, BZPY/$(Li-0.5Na)_2CO_3$ composites show a significantly enhanced protonic conductivity at intermediate temperatures. This may be because easy proton transport is possible through the interface of the carbonate and oxide phase.

  • Recently, eco-friendly sources of energy by fuel cells that use hydrogen as an energy source has emerged as the next generation of energy to solve the problem of environmental issues and exhaustion of energy. A solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) classified based on the type of ion transfer mediator electrolyte has actively being researched. However, the reliability according to the thermal cycle is low during the operation of the fuel cell, and deformation problem comes from the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the electrode material, the components made of ceramic material is also brittle, which means disadvantages in terms of the strength. Therefore, in this study, considering the states of the manufacturing and operating of SOFC single cells, the stress analyses in the each of the interfacial layer between the anode, electrolyte and the cathode were performed to get the basic data for reliability assessment of SOFC. The obtained results show that von Mises stress according to the thickness direction on operating state occurred maximum stress value in the electrolyte layer. And also the stresses inside the active area on a distance of 1 ${\mu}m$ from the electrode interface were estimated. Futhermore the evaluation was done for the variation of the stress according to the stage of the operation divided into three stages of manufacturing, stack, and operating.

  • Enhancing the oxygen surface exchange reaction by increasing the specific surface area of the electrode is a promising structural approach to lowering the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Nanowire structures, due to their high specific surface area and lower tortuosity of ion and electron conduction pathways, play a vital role in enhancing SOFC electrode performance. In this study, we synthesized La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-𝛿 (LSC) nanowires using a polycarbonate membrane filter as a nanotemplate and applied them to the cathode for intermediate-temperature SOFC fabrication. The fabricated cell exhibited a 10% increase in peak power density at 650℃, achieving 0.506 W·cm-2, compared to cell using only commercial LSC powder. Furthermore, distribution of relaxation times analysis revealed a 15% reduction in area-specific polarization resistance in the mid-frequency range. These findings demonstrated that the electrode with LSC nanowires fabricated through electrospray deposition can significantly improve electrochemical performance of intermediate-temperature SOFC.

  • Plug-in Hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) show great potential to reduce gas emission, improve fuel efficiency and offer more driving range flexibility. Moreover, PHEV help to preserve the eco-system, climate changes and reduce the high demand for fossil fuels. To address this; some basic components and energy resources have been used, such as batteries and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells (FCs). However, the FC remains unsatisfactory in terms of power density and response. In light of the above, an electric storage system (ESS) seems to be a promising solution to resolve this issue, especially when it comes to the transient phase. In addition to the FC, a storage system made-up of an ultra-battery UB is proposed within this paper. The association of the FC and the UB lead to the so-called Fuel Cell Battery Electric Vehicle (FCBEV). The energy consumption model of a FCBEV has been built considering the power losses of the fuel cell, electric motor, the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, and brakes. To do so, the implementing a reinforcement-learning energy management strategy (EMS) has been carried out and the fuel cell efficiency has been optimized while minimizing the hydrogen fuel consummation per 100km. Within this paper the adopted approach over numerous driving cycles of the FCBEV has shown promising results.
