In this talk we discuss the dynamics of hydrogen on the Si(100)-2xl surface. At room temperature the sticking coefficient for molecular hydrogen on this surface is less than 10sup-12. However, hydrogen molecules desorbing from the surface do not have an excess of energy, suggesting at best a small barrier on the exit channel. These observations have led to speculation about the validity of detailed balance in this system. Here we show that this discrepancy can be explained by considering both the surface-molecule co-ordinate and that associated with the Si-Si dimer bond tiltangle. By preparing the surface dimers with a specific tiltangle we demonstrate that the barrier to adsorption is a function of this angle and that the sticking coefficient dramatically increase for certain angles. The adsorption-desopption dynamics can then be described in terms of a common potential energy hypersurface involving both of these co-ordinates. The implications of these observations are also discussed. The dynamics of adsorbed hydrogen atoms on the Si(100) surface is also described. Paired dangling bonds produced following recombinative hydrogen desorption are mobile at elevated temperatures. Pairs of dangling bonds are observed to dissociate, diffuse, and ultimately recombine. At sufficiently elevated temperatures dangling bond exchange reactions are observed. These data are analyzed in terms of an attractive zone and an effective binding interaction between dangling bonds. Insights that this provides into the nature of surface defects and the localized chemistry that occurs on this surface, are also discussed.

Two types of mesoporous carbons, CMK-3 and CMK-5, were prepared using mesoporous silica as a removable template, and their hydrogen storage capacities were evaluated. For the purpose of comparison, MWCNT (multi-walled carbon nanotubes) was selected and the adsorption of hydrogen was measured. The amount of hydrogen adsorbed on carbon materials was found to be closely related to the surface areas of carbon samples: The higher the surface area of the carbon material, the larger amount of hydrogen was adsorbed. The hydrogen storage capacity increased in the order of CMK-5 > CMK-3 > MWCNT. In addition, hydrogen storage capacity was greatly enhanced by the Pd-doping onto CMK-5. When the metallic Pd was doped on the carbon material, the adsorption amount of hydrogen via a hydrogen spill-over mechanism was crucial to the hydrogen storage capacity of Pd-doped CMK-5.
Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage is an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources for $21^{st}$ century. In this review, several storage techniques are briefly reviewed and compared. Especially, adsorption/storage via physisorption at low temperature, by using nanoporous adsorbents, is reviewed and evaluated for further developments. The adsorption over a porous material at low temperature is currently investigated deeply to fulfill the storage target. In this review, several characteristics needed for the high hydrogen adsorption capacity are introduced. It may be summarized that following characteristics are necessary for high storage capacity over porous materials: i) high surface area and micropore volume, ii) narrow pore size, iii) strong electrostatic field, and iv) coordinatively unsaturated sites, etc. Moreover, typical results demonstrating high storage capacity over nanoporous materials are summarized. Storage capacity up to 7.5 wt% at liquid nitrogen temperature and 80 atm is reported. Competitive adsorbents that are suitable for hydrogen storage may be developed via intensive and continuous studies on design, synthesis, manufacturing and modification of nanoporous materials.
This study was conducted to improve the operating conditions of an adsorption tower filled with potassium impregnated activated carbon for high hydrogen sulfide capture capacity. Heat treatment modified the surface properties of activated carbon, and ultimately determined its adsorption capacity. The activated carbon doped with potassium showed 57 times more adsorption at room temperature than that of using the raw adsorbent. It is believed that uniform pore formation and strong bonding of the potassium on the surface of carbon contributed to the chemical and physical absorption of hydrogen sulfide. The SEM analysis on the surface structure of various commercial carbons showed that the modification of surface properties through the heat treatment generated the destruction of pore structures resulted in the decrease of the absorption performance. The pressure drop across the activated carbon bed was closely related with the grain size and shape. The optimum size of irregularly shaped activated carbon granules was 2~4 mesh indicating economical feasibility.
Relationships between surface structure and adsorption properties of smoke components were investigated in surface-modified and un-modified activated carbon filter cigarettes. Commercially available activated carbon was treated with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide as oxidant, and their pore volume, surface structure, BET surface area, pore type and size were studied. BET surface area and pore volume were decreased by nitric acid treatment, but median pore diameter was 8.1 $\AA$, which showed better development of pore compared with that of un-modified activated carbon, 6.9 $\AA$. In case of hydrogen peroxide treatment, BET surface area and pore volume were increased. Their pore was found to be a slit type based on V-t plot analysis. Neutralization capacities for bases of different strength (NaHCO3, Na2CO3, NaOEt and NaOH) showed that the majority of the acidic surface groups are of weak acidity. Modification of the activated carbon surface led to a slight change in adsorption properties when analyzing the smoke of triple-filter cigarette with surface-modified activated carbon.
Empty fruit bunch (EFB) char was used to remove $NO_x$ and odorous substances. The physicochemical properties of the EFB chars were altered by steam or KOH treatments. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity were measured to determine the properties of the modified EFB chars. The $deNO_x$ and adsorption test for hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde were performed to determine the feasibility of the modified EFB chars. The KOH-treated EFB (KEFB) char revealed higher $deNO_x$ efficiency than with commercial activated carbon. The Cu-impregnated EFB char also had high $deNO_x$ efficiency at temperatures higher than $150^{\circ}C$. The KEFB char showed the highest hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde adsorption ability, followed by the steam-treated EFB char and untreated EFB char. Moreover, the product prepared by sulfonation of EFB char showed excellent performance for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate for biodiesel production.

Copper (Cu)-based catalysts have been widely used in a methanol steam reforming (MSR) reaction for hydrogen production for air-independent propulsion (AIP) applications and their good catalytic activities have attracted much attention. However, the agglomeration of the catalytic active site Cu causes deteriorating the catalytic performance and suppression of Cu agglomeration is a crucial issue in the AIP applications that the MSR system is typically operated at 250-300℃ for a long time. R. Sakai et al. recently showed a computational study on the anchoring effect that reduces an agglomeration of active sites by doping in a supporter. In order to present the anchoring effect on 𝛾-Al2O3 supported Cu-based catalysts, in this study, the adsorption energies of Cu on X-doped (X=ruthenium, phosphorus, silicon) 𝛾-Al2O3 were calculated and Cu adsorption energy decreased due to a change of the electronic structure originated from doping, thereby proving the anchoring effect.
Hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are one of the common malodorous compounds that can be found in emissions from many sewages treatment plants and industrial plants. Therefore, removing these harmful gases from emissions is of significance in both life and industry because they can cause health problems to human and detrimental effects on the catalysts. In this work, pyrolytic carbon blacks from waste tires were used to develop adsorbent with good adsorption capacity for removal of hydrogen and ammonia. Pellet-type adsorbents were prepared by a mixture of carbon black, metal oxide and sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, and their adsorption capacities were estimated by using breakthrough curve of a continuous fixed bed adsorption column at ambient condition. The adsorbent manufactured with a mixture of carbon black, iron oxide(III) and sodium hydroxide showed the maximum working capacity of hydrogen sulfide. For ammonia, maximum working capacity was obtained by the adsorbent manufactured with a mixture of carbon black, copper oxide(II) and hydrochloric acid.

It is well known that the heavy water separation process using hydrogen isotope exchange reaction over the platinum catalyst is the most efficient. In this study, the Pt/silicalite catalysts were prepared and characterized by hydrogen adsorption in order to develop the hydrophobic platinum catalyst for hydrogen isotope exchange reaction. Silicalite was synthesized as support material and it was verified that silicalite is more hydrophobic than activated carbon and ZSM-5. Also the platinum was loaded on silicalite by conventional impregnation and ion-exchange method respectively. The platinum dispersion of Pt/silicalite catalysts was measured through hydrogen adsorption experiment. The dispersion is very low in the catalyst prepared by the impregnation method while it is very high with limited platinum content in the catalyst prepared by the ion-exchange method.
The four-bed PSA process using a layered bed of activated carbon and zeolite 5A was studied to produce a high purity hydrogen product from SMR off-gas. At a desired product purity (99.999%+), the recovery increased with decreasing the linear velocity. However, the difference of the increasing of the recovery became smaller with the decreasing of the linear velocity and then was similar from below the linear velocity 3.9 cm/s. When the adsorbents, the feed gas composition, and the operating conditions are given, the residence time is mainly a function for design of the PSA bed size. The minimum residence time exists to obtain the maximum recovery at desired product purity.
