Thermal Behavior of Arrayed-Waveguide Grating Made of Silica/Polymer Hybrid Waveguide

  • The thermal behavior of an arrayed-waveguide grating made of a silica/polymer hybrid waveguide was examined. We experimentally confirmed that the hybrid waveguide is effective to decrease the temperature and polarization dependence of the center wavelength owing to the negative thermo-optic coefficient of the refractive index and extremely low baking temperature of the polymer cladding. However, the detachment of the polymer cladding from the silica core, which took place either during a repeated heat cycle test or during long-term storage in atmosphere, was a serious problem for practical use.

  • We report on the polarization-insensitive design and fabrication of an arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG's) using sol-gel derived silica glass films formed on fused silica substrates to provide cheap and stable tools for better design. An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer with raised structure is fabricated in order to effect polarization sensitivity. Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber. passive WDM components such as monolithic wavelength demultiplexer have to be polarization insensitive. Low-Loss Multimode Waveguides Using Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Materials

  • Multimode channel waveguides were fabricated using a direct UV patterning technology from thick films deposited by the one-step dip-coating of an organic/inorganic hybrid material (ORMOCER(equation omitted). The core size of the covered ridge waveguide was 43${\times}$51 $\mu\textrm{m}$$^2$; the waveguides can be readily prepared for multimode applications by direct UV patterning. The waveguides exhibited smooth surface profiles and a low optical loss of 0.07 ㏈/cm at the most important wavelength (850nm) used for optical interconnects.

  • A novel optical hybrid device that doubles the multilevel demodulation resolution by adding the optical interferometer with a waveguide crossover is proposed, theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. We report two types of all-passive phase control schemes that will be referred to as a phase compensation scheme and a phase optimization scheme. We also apply the proposed phase control schemes to a 45° optical hybrid consisting of two parallel 90° optical hybrids together with the proposed phase control scheme for demodulating 8-level differential phase shift keying optical signals. Octagonal phase response with low wavelength sensitive excess loss of <0.8 dB over 31-nm-wide spectral range will be demonstrated in the InP-based material platform.

  • Hybrid thin film nanostructures composed of metal nanoparticles (NPs) and self-assembled polymer films with different spatial distributions of NPs were analyzed by optical waveguide spectroscopy (OWS). Specifically, the dielectric constants were calculated using effective medium theory for the incorporation of 1 vol% Au NP into the block copolymer (BCP) films having a cylindrical nanodomain morphology. Three cases were considered: uniform distribution of NPs in the film; selective distribution of NPs only in the cylindrical domains; and segregation of NPs to the center of the cylindrical domains. The optical waveguide spectra derived from the calculated dielectric constants demonstrate the feasibility of experimentally distinguishing the composite nanostructures with different inner morphologies in the hybrid metal NP-BCP nanostructures, by the measurement of the dielectric constants using OWS.

  • 하이브리드 모드 마이크로 스트립 線路에서 周波數의 函數인 實效誘電率 및 實效幅에 따른 正規化 位相速度와 特性 임피던스의 分散特性을 計算하기 爲한 Planar Waveguide 모델이 提示되었으며. Eeff(f)와 Weff(f)는 周波數에 따른 實驗關係式과 CAD를 目的으로 設定된 計算式을 利用하여 Planar Waveguide모델 計算에 適用하였고, 多樣한 比誘電率과 스트립 幅/基板 두께(W/h)는 $0.5$\leq$W/h\leq2.5의$ 比를 使用하여, 그 結果를 稱的値, Spectral domain 解析 및 實驗關係 結果 等과 比較하였다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 結果, Planar Waveguide 모델을 利用할 境遇가 이미 發表된 바 있는 다른 方法보다 周波數가 增加함에 따라 周波數 別 正規化 位相速度는 1/ 의 값에 가장 接近하였고 特性 임피던스는 더욱 增加하였다. 또한, CAD를 目的으로 設定된 Eeff(f)를 本 提案 모델이 適用한 境遇가 實驗關係式을 利用한 境遇보다 더 좋은 結果를 얻을 수 있었다.

Performance of Hybrid Laser Diodes Consisting of Silicon Slab and InP/InGaAsP Deep-Ridge Waveguides

  • The fundamental transverse mode lasing of a hybrid laser diode is a prerequisite for efficient coupling to a single-mode silicon waveguide, which is necessary for a wavelength-division multiplexing silicon interconnection. We investigate the lasing mode profile for a hybrid laser diode consisting of silicon slab and InP/InGaAsP deep ridge waveguides. When the thickness of the top silicon is 220 nm, the fundamental transverse mode is lasing in spite of the wide waveguide width of $3.7{\mu}m$. The threshold current is 40 mA, and the maximum output power is 5 mW under CW current operation. In the case of a thick top silicon layer (1 ${\mu}m$), the higher modes are lasing. There is no significant difference in the thermal resistance of the two devices.

38 GHz 하이브리드 전력증폭기 모듈 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of 38 GHz Hybrid Power Amplifier Module)

  • 본 연구에서 GaAs pHEMT와 도파관-마이크로스트립 변환구조를 이용하여 38 GHz 대역 하이브리드 전력증폭기 모듈이 개발되었다. 10 mil duroid 기판이 전력증폭가와 도파관-마이크로스트립 변환구조 제작에 사용되었다. 제작된 도파관-마이크로스트립 변환구조는 32 - 40 GHz 대역까지 약 I dB 삽입손실(back to back)의 측정 결과를 보였다. 전력증폭기 모듈의 측정 결과, 36.8 - 38.5 GHz에서 대략 출력 전력 29 dBm(P1.5 dB), 전력 이득은 7.2 dB, PAE 는 11.2 % 였다.

유전체 기판 위에 놓인 스트립 형태의 도파관 마운트 해석 (Analysis of the strip type waveguide mount backed by the dielectric substrate)

  • 이 논문에서는 모드정합법과 유도(induced) EMF방법을 이용하여 유전체 기판상에 놓인 스트립 형태의 도파관 마운트의 입력 임피던스 특성을 해석하였다. 도파관 내에 유전체 기판이 존재하는 부분을 단면의 일부가 유전체로 채워진 도파관으로 모델링하여, 이 구조에 대한 하이브리드(hybrid) 모드 해석을 수행하였다. 여기서 계산된 모드함수들을 이용하여 유전체 기판에 의한 전자파 산란문제를 모드정합법으로 풀었다. 그리고, 이 결과와 유도 EMF방법을 이용하여 마운트 간극에서 본 입력 임피던스를 계산하였다. 여기서 얻어진 계산 결과를 다른 수치해석법에 의한 계산결과와 비교하여 그 타당성을 검증하였으며, 기판의 폭이나 마운트 간극의 위치등의 파라미터가 임피던스에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다.
