Human-machine serial systems must be normal in both systems. Though the failure of machine is irreducible by itself, the human errors are of recurring type. When the human performance is described quantitatively, non-homogeneous Poisson Process model of human errors can be developed. And the model parameters can be estimated by maximum likelihood estimation and numerical analysis method. System reliability is obtained by multiplying machine reliability by human reliability.
Advanced nuclear power plants are generally large complex systems automated by computers. Whenever a rare plant emergency occurs the plant operators must cope with the emergency under severe mental stress without committing any fatal errors. Furthermore, The operators must train to improve and maintain their ability to cope with every conceivable situation, though it is almost impossible to be fully prepared for an infinite variety of situations. In view of the limited capability of operators in emergency situations, there has been a new approach to preventing the human error caused by improper human-machine interaction. The new approach has been triggered by the introduction of advanced information systems that help operators recognize and counteract plant emergencies. In this paper, the adverse effect of automation in human-machine systems is explained. The discussion then focuses on how to configure a joint human-machine system for ideal human-machine interaction. Finally, there is a new proposal on how to organize technologies that recognize the different states of such a joint human-machine system.
Present computing power and enhanced technology is progressing at a dramatic rate. These systems can unravel complex issues, assess and control processes, learn, and-in many cases-fully automate production. There is no doubt that technological advancement is improving many aspects of life, changing the landscape of virtually all industries and enhancing production beyond what was thought possible. However, the human is still a part of these systems. Consequently, as the advancement of systems transpires, the role of humans within those systems will unavoidably continue to adapt as well. Due to the human tendency for error, this technological advancement should compel a persistent emphasis on human error reduction as part of maximizing system efficiency and safety-especially in the context of the nuclear industry. Within this context, as new systems are designed and the role of the human is transformed, human error should be targeted for a significant decrease relative to predecessor systems and an equivalent increase in system stability and safety. This article contends that optimizing the roles of humans and machines in the design and implementation of new types of automation in nuclear facility systems should involve human error reduction without ignoring the essential importance of human interaction within those systems.
The Haptic Exploration Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins University is currently exploring many problems related to haptics (force and tactile information) in human-machine systems. We divide our work into two main areas: virtual environments and robot-assisted manipulation systems. Our interest in virtual environments focuses on reality-based modeling, in which measurements of the static and dynamic properties of actual objects are taken in order to produce realistic virtual environments. Thus, we must develop methods for acquiring data from real objects and populating pre-defined models. We also seek to create systems that can provide active manipulation assistance to the operator through haptic, visual, and audio cues. These systems may be teleoperated systems, which allow human users to operate in environments that would normally be inaccessible due to hazards, distance, or scale. Alternatively, cooperative manipulation systems allow a user and a robot to share a tool, allowing the user to guide or override the robot directly if necessary. Haptics in human-machine systems can have many applications, such as undersea and space operations, training for pilots and surgeons, and manufacturing. We focus much of our work on medical applications.
The proper design of man-machine systems requires as much understanding of the human element as of the machine. Although the modern systems engineer can obtain a very high degree of repeatability and accuracy for the characteristics of a machine, these of the human elements are much less well known. Due to the complexity and importance of modern man-machine systems, this difficult problem has recently received increasing attention. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the human operator have been newly determined by impulse estimation using Pseuo-random binnary signals as a test signal and the quasi-linear human operator models used as an element of a closed-loop control system adopted from McRuer & Krendel and Bekey. Also the techniques and instruments are presented for correlating the actual characteristics of the constructed system with anticipated theoretical values. Consequently, in spite of many problems remain yet, experimental results were very satisfactory.

Human support systems, such as computers and robots, are required to be changed to a machine equipment independently operates and communicate with human, rather than non-sensitivity and obedient machine equipment Therefore, we notice nonverbal language that human recognizes naturally. In addition, we show the validity and constitution of mechanism that recognizes an intention of human using those several information to judge independently.
Human state in human-machine systems highly affects the overall system performance, and should be detected and monitored. Physiological cues are essential indicators of human state and useful for the purpose of monitoring. The study presented in this paper was focused on developing a bio-inspired sensing system, i.e., Nano-Skin, to non-intrusively measure physiological cues on human-machine contact surfaces to detect human state. The paper is presented in three parts. The first part is to analyze the relationship between human state and physiological cues, and to introduce the conceptual design of Nano-Skin. Generally, heart rate, skin conductance, skin temperature, operating force, blood alcohol concentration, sweat rate, and electromyography are closely related with human state. They can be measured through human-machine contact surfaces using Nano-Skin. The second part is to discuss the technologies for skin temperature measurement. The third part is to introduce the design and manufacture of the Nano-Skin for skin temperature measurement. Experiments were performed to verify the performance of the Nano-Skin in temperature measurement. Overall, the study concludes that Nano-Skin is a promising product for measuring physiological cues on human-machine contact surfaces to detect human state.
This research aims to use machine learning technology in human resource management to predict employees' work-life balance. The study utilized a dataset from IBM Watson Analytics in the IBM Community for the machine learning analysis. Multinomial dependent variables concerning workers' work-life balance were examined, categorized into continuous and categorical types using the Generalized Linear Model. The complexity of assessing variable roles and their varied impact based on the type of model used was highlighted. The study's outcomes are academically and practically relevant, showcasing how machine learning can offer further understanding of psychological variables like work-life balance through analyzing employee profiles.

This paper presents a model which may be used in optimal control of the Man-Machine systems in the aspect of information transmission. For this, we divided information into human parts and machine parts, and consider minimum error principle as a machine operating logic. Furthermore, we take the maximum information principle as a human information operating logic. This can be done in considering the Fisher Information and its transformed type, information inequality.
A mechanical system controlled by human operator, such as master-slave system, includes human dynamics in the whole system and such a system is called a human-machine system. In the system, operator's skill is required considerably in order to realize a meaningful operation. In this paper, a new concept and design strategy of compensator that improves the operativity of human-machine system are proposed. The compensator is called "collaborater "that is named after "collaborator" who works together with people. We mean not to design the automatic controller but the compensator that works together with a machine so that human feels the fulfillment in the operation. Our aim is to realize cooperation of people and a machine on a higher level.
