한국기업의 지식경영 구축과 인적자원 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study in the construction of the system of knowledge management and human resources management in the Korean firm)

  • Recently, most enterprises are having a knowlege management boom. A number of books associated with the knowlege management are being published, countless public seminars are held, and many research councils have been organized studying it formally or informally as if not importing the system is like falling behind a fashion. However, there are not many cases that achieved success by constructing the system of knowledge management. Then, why the knowledge management is not so much effective despite so many voices wanting the change of management system and a lot of public lectures about it? I guess the reason is that most companies do not have concrete methodology. Seeing a result of a survey which reported that with spread of venture boom and successful examples being known widely, the outflow of precious human resources is accelerated and a large number of employees of conglomerates have already resigned or are considering separation from their positions, we can realize that are occurring a change which can be nearly called severance in an occupational view and an organization culture. The preference to a large enterprise or a public institution of labor is low today and the notion about a lifelong job is regarded as past remains. As for this, it could be said that the social atmosphere that pursued the stability of a job has been changed to the practical one that attaches importance to ability and pay. The way of thinking of employees has been changed while established organizations cannot satisfy their desire and this explains why important members of a company are flown out. The reason why superior human resources move to venture businesses is that they can do their likable work and also prove their ability as well as unconventional rewards. Although existing companies are trying to preserve important human resources through performance compensating stock option, temporary patching up of personnel management cannot retard the rushing wind of foundation and the outflow of labor. On the contrary, clumsy import of performance-based reward system not only fails to hire superior labor power but also can bring about a sense of incompatibility and conflicts among the remaining employees. Therefore, this thesis, focusing on how to choose, develop, and maintain the human resources, will suggest a future-aiming human resources management model of Korean enterprises after comparing and analyzing the actual condition of domestic companies and the trends of advanced corportaions.

무리하중을 받는 구조물의 간편하고 효율적인 응답추정 (Simple and Efficient Methods for the Response Estimation of Building Structure Subjected to Human Induced Loads)

  • 대공간의 쇼핑몰, 오피스 등과 같이 낮은 고유진동수를 가지는 구조물들은 사람의 활동에 의하여 큰 동적응답이 발생할 수 있다. 이러한 활동은 한 사람의 경우보다는 여러 사람에 의한 경우가 더 일반적이다. 본 연구의 목적은 구조물의 모드형상을 이용하여 보행자 전용 구조물과 같이 무리하중을 받는 구조물의 응답을 간단하게 평가하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 사람간의 상관관계가 고려된 무리하중을 받는 구조물의 응답에 관한 식을 유도하였다. 그리고 무리하중을 구성하는 개개의 하중의 연관성을 파악하기 위하여 두 개의 로드셀을 이용하여 하중간의 상관관계를 조사하였다. 구조물의 모드와 하중간의 상관관계에 대한 식을 이용하여 무리하중에 의한 응답을 구조물의 모드형상만으로 평가하는 방법을 제시하였다. 이 방법의 효율성을 확인하기 위하여 보와 바닥판의 예를 들어 무리하중을 동조시킨 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우에 대하여 응답을 평가하였으며 마지막으로 실제 사용중인 구조물을 대상으로 무리하중을 동조시킨 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우에 대하여 응답을 계측하고 이를 제시한 방법과 비교하였다.

사람성유아세포의 Transforming growth factor-$\beta$1과 Nitric oxide 생성에 미치는 Helicobacter pylori 항원의 효과 (Effects of Helicobacter pylori Antigen on Producton of Transforming growth factor-$\beta$1 and Nitric oxide in Human Fibroblast)

  • Cytokines are hormone-like proteins which mediate and regulast inflammatory and immune responses. Transforming growth factor -$\beta$1(TGF-$\beta$) plays an important role in the control of the immune response and wound healing, and in the development o various tissues and organs, Nitric oxide(NO) is major messenger molecule regulating immune function and blood vessel dilation and serving as a neurotransmitter in the brain and peripheral nervous system. Also, NO is to be a potent mutagen that cause mutation in the p53 tumor suppressor gene in early phases of human gastric carcinogenesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Helicobacter phlori lystes, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and Staphylococcus enterotoxin B(SEB) on production of TGF-$\beta$1 and NO by human fibroblasts. Primary cultured human fibroblasts were incubated with H. pylori lysates(Hp), LPs, SEB, Hp+LPS, Hp+SEB, Hp+LPS+SEB. Cultured supernatants that were collected at 24, 48 and 72 hr were assessed for TGF-$\beta$1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and NO production by quantification of nitrite ion. TGF-$\beta$1 production in fibroblasts exposed with Hp, LPS or SEB for 48 hrs was enhanced, but for 72 hrs inhibited. Its production by doble exposure such as Hp+LPS, Hp+SEB, Hp+LPS+SEB was lowered in comparison with single exposure of Hp in cases of 24 and 48 hrs incubation, but for 72 hrs decreased in Hp vaculoating toxin(+), increased in Hp vacuolating toxin(-). No production in fibroblasts increaed at all doses of LPS. But its production by exposure of SEB increased or decreased according to dose and incubation time. Also, NO production by Hp vacuolating toxin(+) increased at all doses, but its production by Hp vacuolating toxin(-) decreased. Its production by doble exposure such as Hp+LPS, Hp+SEB, Hp+LPS+SEB decreased in comparison with single exposure Hp Therefore, quantities pf TGB-$\beta$1 and NO released by human fibroblasts shows differences according to kinds of stimulants. Also, in care stimulated with same kinds of stimulants, its productions exhibit quantitative differences according to exposure times. These results suggest that the decreased of TGF-$\beta$1 in fibroblasts by mixed exposure with Hp producing vacuolating toxin and bacterial toxins such as LPS and SEB may effect negatively in healing of host tissue and increased of NO by infection oh H. pylori may related to the increased susceptibility for human gastric carcinogenesis.

정년연장 법제화에 대응하는 기업의 장년인력관리 사례연구 (A Case Study on the Management for Mid-to Senior Age Human Resources of Enterprises following the Extension of Retiring Age Law)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 정년 60세 의무 법제화와 베이비붐 세대의 대량 은퇴에 따른 기업의 장년인력관리에 대한 사례를 살펴보고, 그에 따른 정책적 시사점을 제시하는 것이다. 장년인력관리에 대한 기업의 대응방안 분석을 위해 전반적 인사관리 체계 별 채용 및 선발, 교육훈련 및 경력개발, 배치 및 승진, 평가 및 보상, 퇴직관리 등 총 다섯 단계로 나누어 살펴보았다. 연구의 시사점으로는 기업차원에서 입사부터 퇴사까지의 경력관리전략을 위한 장기적 관점의 프로그램 도입, 출향제도 정착, 임금피크제 확산, 퇴직관리를 위한 기업내부의 상시적 전직지원센터운영, 다양한 컨설팅 확대 및 최고경영진의 장년인력관리에 대한 인식의 전환이 시급히 요구된다. 정부차원에서 출향제도의 제도적 보완, 고용장려금 지원제도의 개선, 국가직무능력표준 기반 장년 고용분야 확대와 직무개발, 인사관리제도 혁신을 위한 지원 및 관리 매뉴얼 보급 그리고 국자차원의 생애전환기별 전직교육 실시가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

한국인 및 가축(돼지)에 있어 Reovirus에 대한 HI 항체분석 (A Study of the HI Antibody of the Koreans and Swine to Reovirus)

  • 본 연구는 한국인 및 한국 각지의 가축에 대한 reovirus 2형의 혈구응집저지항체의 분포를 알어보고저 실시된 연구이다. 사람의 피검물은 1979년 6월부터 12월까지 시내 종합병원에 래원한 신검대상자 총 614명과 한국각지의 가축(돼지) 총 877수를 대상으로 하였다. 돼지의 혈액은 1977년 6월부터 동년 9월까지 전국 25개 지역에서 채취했다. 이들에 대한 혈청을 분리하여 $-20^{\circ}C$에 보관하면서 실험하였고, 혈구응집저지시험은 Rosen(1960b, 1974)의 수기를 따랐다. 항원(Reovirus 2형)은 이호왕(1975) 교수로부터 분양받어 본 교실에서 HeLa 세포에 계대하여 혈구응집가를 확인하여 사용했다. 실험 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 한국인 총 614명의 Reovirus 2형에 대한 10배 이상 HI항체 보유율은 73.29%로서 한국인이 높은 항체를 보유하고 있었다. 그리고 남녀비는 남자(76.47%)가 여자 (65.12%)보다 약간 높은 경향을 보였다. 2. 연령별로 본 한국인의 항체 보유율은 전 연령군에 고루게 분포되어 있었으나 41세에서 50세군이 85.71%로 약간 높았다. 3. 월별 항체보유율은 6월이 93.22%로 높았고, 10월이 47.62%로 낮았다. 4. 한편 한국의 25개 지역의 총 877수의 돼지에 분포된 항체보유율은 61.80%(542수)였다. 이를 도별로 구분한 바 서울이 83.37%로 가장 높았고, 가장 낮은 지역은 충남으로 40%였다. 5. 월별로 검출된 돼지의 항체보유율은 6월(63.21%)부터 9월(72.25%)까지 사이에 점차 증가되어 가는 경향을 보였다. 6. 사람과 돼지에 분포한 HI 항체가는 그림 2와 같이 대부분이 1:20이내에서 1:80이내에 분포하였으며 상호 차가 있었다. 이상의 실험결과를 토대로 볼때 한국자연계에는 Reovirus 2형이 광범하게 분포되어 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 한국인 및 가축(돼지)에 있어서 높은 항체가를 보유하고 있다는 사실을 새로히 알 수 있었다.

각종 인체 암조직의 당의 산화경로 분석 (Oxidative Pathway of $C^{14}-glucose$ in Various Human Cancer Tissues)

  • Tissue homogenates of 12 kinds of human cancer tissues were incubated separately in medium containing $C^{14}-1-glucose$ and $C^{14}-6-glucose$ as a substrate in order to observe the oxidative pathway of glucose in the tumor tissues. At the end of 3 hours incubation in the Dubnuff metabolic shaking incubator, respiratory $CO_2$ samples trapped by alkaling which was placed in the center well of incubation flask were analysed for total $CO_2$ production rates and their radioactivities. The tissue homogenate samples after incubation were analyzed for their concentrations of glucose, lactate and pyruvate. Calculations were made on the glucose consumption rate and accumulation rates of lactate and pyruvate. Fractionation of oxidative pathway of glucose was carried out by calculating $C^{14}O_2 yields from C-1 and C-6 carbon of glucose. The following results were obtained. 1. In 12 kinds of human cancer, total $CO_2$ production rates were less than $8{\mu}M/gm$ except 2 cases. These lower values impressed that oxidative metabolism in the tumor tissues generally inhibited as compared with that in normal tissues. On the other hand, fractions of $CO_2$ derived from glucose to total $CO_2$ production rates (RSA) were less than 10% in every case. These facts showed that oxidation of glucose into $CO_2$ was remarkably inhibited in the tumor tissues. 2. Factions of glucose disappeared into $CO_2\;(RGD_{CO_2})$, lactate $(RGD_L)$, pyruvate $(RGD_P)$ to glucose consumption rates were as follows. $RGD_{CO_2}$ were less than 2% in cases of in this experiment and $RGD_L$ showed more than 5% except in 2 cases. These facts showed that anaerobic degradation of glucose into 3 carbon compounds was easily proceeded but further degradation into $CO_2$ via the TCA cycle was greatly inhibited resulting in accumulation of lactate. There are large variation in values of $RGD_P$ in different kinds of tumor tissue but relatively higher values in $RGD_{CO_2}$ were obtained in the tumor tissues as compared with those of normal tissues. 3. The oxidative pathway of glucose in tumor tissues were analyzed from the values of RSA which were obtained in $C^{14}-1\;and\;C^{14}-6-glucose$ incubation experiments. It was found that 3% of $CO_2$ derived from glucose were oxidized via the principal EMP-TCA cycle and the remainder were via alternate pathway such as HMP in the liver cancer and values in other cancer tissues were as follows; 4% in the tongue cancer, 6% in the colon cancer, 6% in the lung cancer, 9% in the stomach cancer, 11% in the ovarian cancer, 12% in the neck tumor, 22% in the uterine cancer, 22% in the bladder tumor, 32% in the spindle cell sarcoma and 65% in the brain tumor. These values except later 2 cases showed less than 30% which is the lowest value among the normal tissues. Even in the brain tumor in which showed highest value in the tumor group. It is reasonable to suppose that this fraction was remarkably decreased because values in normal brain tissue was more than 90%. From the above data, it was concluded that in tumor tissues, oxidation of glucose via TCA cycle was greatly inhibited but correlation between degree of inhibited oxidation of glucose via TCA cycle and malignancy of tumor were not clarified in this experiments.

여성에 있어 DNA 칩검사에 의한 인유두종바이러스 감염률의 조사 (Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus by DNA Chip Test in Women)

  • 우리는 549명의 여성을 대상으로 HPV DNA Chip을 이용하여 자궁경부암의 주요 원인인 HPV 감염률을 조사하고 Pap 도말 염색법을 이용한 세포학적 검사를 실시하였다. 전체 대상여성 549명 중 237명 HPV DNA Chip 검사에서 양성 이었다(43.17%). 237명 중 203명이 고위험군 HPV 아형에 감염되었고(88.61%, 고위험군), 17명이 저위험군 HPV 아형에 감염되었고(7.17%, 저위험군), 나머지 17명은 고위험군 아형, 저위험군 아형, 미확인 아형에 감염 되었다(7.17%, 혼합형). 연령별 감염률은 20대가 1.26%, 30대 15.61%,40대 31.65%, 50대 23.21%, 60대 이상이 13.92%으로 확인되었다. 저위험군과 혼합군에서 고위험군보다 HPV 감염의 빈도가 더 낮게 나타났다. 세포학적 진단결과(224명의 여성)와 HPV chip 양성(237명의 여성)여성 간의 비교에서 고위험군의 경우 194명중 132명(68.04%)이 ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, 7.22%), LSIL (low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, 15.98%), HSIL (high grade SIL, 23.20%), 자궁경부암(21.65%) 등과 같은 자궁경부질환이 있었다. 저위험군(224 여성 중 14명)의 경우 ASCUS 1예와 LSIL 6예였는데 비해 혼합군(224 여성 중 4명)의 경우에는 단지 2예의 ASCUS 만이 있었다. 고위험 HPV 아형16 및 18에 감염된 여성은 각각 26예 및 7예의 자궁경부암이 있었으나 저위험군 HPV 아형 및 기타 아형의 경우 자궁경부암 발생이 매우 낮거나 없었다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서 43.17%의 HPV 유병률을 보였고 고위험 HPV 아형16이 감염된 여성들에 있어 전암 병변 또는 자궁경부암의 원인이 되는 주요인자이며 HPV DNA chip 검사는 HPV 감염 유무를 진단하는 정밀하고 유용한 방법임을 시사하고 있다.

한국(韓國)에 있어서의 장내기생충감염(腸內寄生虫感染)의 현황(現況)과 추이(推移) (Current Status and Transition of the Prevalence of Intestinal Parasitic Infections in Korea)

  • Out of a total of 58 species of helminthic and protozoan parasitic infections in Korea, so far 38 species were reported as intestinal parasites of man. Quite a few species of the intestinal parasitic infections have long been prevalent throughout the country and this has been a significant public health problem. In this paper, current status and transition of the intestinal parasitic infections in the past years were presented. Chronological reviewing of data show background and prospects of change in the prevalence of infections. In the national prevalence survey on parasitic infections conducted once every five years since 1971, stool examinations were done by both cellophane thick smear and brine flotation techniques. Every egg positive case of Ascaris lumbricoides and Clonorchis sinensis was further examined by Stoll's dilution egg counting technique. In 1981, perianal swab using adhesive cellulose tape was added for Enterobius infection. For protozoan cyst examination conducted by province and city in '81, fecal specimens were fixed in SAF solution and examined by the formalin-ether concentration technique. High prevalence of parasitic infection in ana before the 1960s can be easily understood from the data given by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in 1967. From a parasite control point of view, the 1960s was the preparatory period particularly for control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Several organizations which have contributed to parasite control were founded in this period and the prevention law of parasitic infections was passed in '66. In the '70s, overall prevalence rates of the common intestinal parasitic infections, which were highly prevalent in the past were turned into reduction phase for the first time. The '80s can be said to be an active control period of parasitic infections. Intestinal helminths According to the reports of the national prevalence survey on parasitic infections, the prevalence of helminthic infections was 84.3%(number of person examined:24,887) in '71, 63.2%(27,178) in '76, and 41.1%(35,018) in '81. By area, the prevalence rate in '81 was 35.1%(20,569) in urban areas and 49.6%(14,447) in rural areas. Intestinal nematodes Ascaris lumbricoides The prevalence of Ascaris infection has decreased significantly in recent years. Among students, the prevalence was 55.4%, in '69 and decreased to 4.7% in '83. In the national prevalence surveys, the prevalence decreased to 13.0% in '81 from 54.9% in '71. By area, the prevalence decreased to 8.5% in '81 from 46.4% in '71 in urban area and 19.4% in '81 from 59.6% in '71 in rural area. By age, the prevalence has become in recent years relatively even in all age groups, although higher prevalence used to be seen in young age groups of around 10 years old, particulary in the highly prevalent rural areas. By sex, the prevalence was higher in the female than in the male. Unfertilized egg positive rates among the ascariasis cases increased gradually up to 55.4% on the average in '81. The intensity of the infection was also significantly decreased. Trichuris trichiura Trichuris infection had also decreased to 23.4% in '81 from 65.4% in '71. By area, the decreasing tendency of the prevalence became faster in urban areas than in the rural areas. The prevalence in urban and rural areas in '71 was 69.7%, and 63.1% respectively and decreased to 19.5% and 29.0% respectively in '81. By age, the prevalence reached a peak at the 10-14 age group and showed relatively even distribution throughout all age groups. By sex, the prevalence was close in young age groups, but in the 30s or over age group, especially in rural area, the prevalence was significantly higher in the female than in the male. The prevalence has much fluctuated depending in the area. The prevalence in rural areas surveyed in the '80s shows a range between 20.9% and 73.7% by locality. It is anticipated that the prevalence of Trichuris infection will drop more rapidly, when mass treatment is conducted. Hookworms Hookworm infection by mostly Ancylostoma duodenale and a few by Necator americanus has decreased to a negligible levels in recent years. In the national prevalence surveys, the prevalence was 10.7% in '71, 2.2% in '76, and 0.5% in '81. The prevalence was higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Wide application of multi-specific anthelminthics in the ascariasis control programmes conducted in the past decade appear to have been effective against hookworm infection. Trichostrongylus orientalis As in the case with hookworm infection, the prevalence of Trichostrongylus infection has reached a negligible levels. In the national prevalence surveys, the prevalence was 7.7% in '71, 1.0% in '76 and 0.2% in '81. Enterobius vermicularis In the national prevalence survey in '81, the egg positive rate was 12.0%. Higher prevalence is expected when examined repeatedly. The prevalence rate was 10.3% in urban area and 14.6% in rural area. In recent surveys conducted in rural areas among schoolchildren, the prevalence was 32.4% in Gimhae Gun in '82 and 64.1% in Yeongyang Gun in '83. By age, the egg positive rate was higher in young age groups of around 10 and sharply decreased in age groups of around 20 and then somewhat increased again in middle age groups. By sex, the prevalence was higher in the female than in the male. Strongyloides stercoralis Strongyloides stercoralis infection has rarely been found in Korea. Three cases were reported in 1914. And 0.1-0.5% were found infected out of 2,642 persons examined at the prisoner-of-war camp on Geojedo in 1956. One case was reported in '54 and '82, respectively. Anisakis spp. No systematic survey has been conducted for anisakiasis In Korea. So far, only several cases have been found 1 case in Seoul in '71, 5 cases in Busan in '81 and 1 case in Busan in '84. Intestinal trematodes Metagonimus yokogawai In the national prevalence survey conducted in 1981, the egg positive rate was 1.24% on the average. High endemic areas are located in the southwestern part of Korea. The prevalence in Hadong Gun was 29.1% on the average in '79. In a survey conducted in 76, the prevalence was 44.0% in Gwangyang, 55.0% in Gogseung and 29.0% in Gurye. The infection is closely correlated with raw sweetfish consumption in these areas. Other intestinal trematodes A human case of Heterophyes heterophyes was reported in 1914. Several species were reported in the '80s : 17 cases of Fibricola seoulensis, 9 cases of Pygidiopsis summa, 8 cases of Heterophyes heterophyes nocens, 1case of Heterophyopsis continua, 2 cases of Stellantchasmus falcatus, 1 case of Stictodora sp., 1 case of Echinostoma hortense, and 4 cases of Echinochasmus japonicus. As the intermediate hosts, snakes and frogs play a role for F.seoulensis and fish for the rest of the species. Intestinal cestodes Taenia saginata and T. solium Egg positive rates in the national prevalence survey were 0.7% in '76 and 1.1% in '81. The prevalence in '81 was 0.6% in urban area and 1.8% in rural area. The proglottid positive rate in Jeju Do was 19.2% on the average. On Udo, Jeju Do in 1983, the egg positive rate among the inhabitants was 2.9%. Hymenolepis nana In the national prevalence survey, egg positive rates were 0.6% in '76 and 0.4% in '81. No difference was seen in the prevalence by area and sex. Hymenolepis diminuta Infected cases were reported : 3 in '64 and I in '66. Egg positive rate in '81 was 0.01% in the national prevalence survey. Diphylobothrium latum So far, about 30 cases have been reported. The cases have been reported more frequently in recent surveys. Mesocestoides sp. A case was reported from a hospitalized patient in Seoul in '67. Spirometra erinacei Two cases were reported in '84 following reidentification of the adult worms collected in '74. Intestinal protozoa Out of a total of 23 species of human protozoan infections in Korea, 13 species were reported as intestinal protozoa : Entamoeba histolytica, E coli, Endolimax nana, Iodamoeba b$\ddot{u}$tschlii, Dientamoeba fragilis, Giardia lamblia, Chilomastix mesnilii, Embadomonas sp., Enteromonas hominis, Trichomonas hominis, Isospora belli, I. Hominis(Sarcocystis hominis), and Balantidium coli. Since the first report on intestinal protozoan infections in 1925, there have been quite a few survey data on the prevalence of the infection. It was found reviewing the data chronologically that up to the early '70s the infection was prevalent around a 30-50%. After that, the protozoan cyst positive rate has shown the tendency of gradual decrease throughout the country. Protozoan cyst survey conducted in Seoul and several provinces in 1981 revealed infection rates of 8.9%(1,310) in Gangweondo, 10.7%(1,703) in Gyenggi Do, 11.7%(1,032) in Jeonra Buk Do, 9.1%(4,116) in Jeonra Nam Do, and 1.4%(5,275) in Seoul. Entamoeba histolytica In the survey conducted by province in '81, the cyst positive rate was 0.8% in Gangweon-do, 0.3% in Gyeonggi Do, 1.4% in both Jeonra Buk Do and Jeonra Nam Do, and 0.2% in Seoul. Giardia lamblia In the survey by province in '81, cyst positive rates were 2.2% in both Gyeonggi Do and Jeonra Buk Do, 1.9% in Jeonra Nam Do, 0.5% in Gangweon Do, and 0.9% in Seoul. Balantidium coli Two cases were reported. One in 1930 and the other in '74. Isospora belli and I. Hominis(Sarcocystis hominis) Isospora belli was reported : 1 case in '56 and 3 cases in '66. I. Hominis, recently identified to be synonymous with Sarcocystis hominis, was reported : 3 cases in '66. Other intestinal protozoa The protozoan parasites other than the above mentioned are generally treated as commensal, although some of them are considered to be pathogenic. The data of '81 show that about 10% of the inhabitants are still infected with protozoa.

Distribution and Haplotype Associations of XPD Lys751Gln, XRCC1 Arg280His and XRCC1 Arg399Gln Polymorphisms with Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in the Malaysian Population

  • Background: DNA repair pathways play a crucial role in maintaining the human genome. Previous studies associated DNA repair gene polymorphisms (XPD Lys751Gln, XRCC1 Arg280His and XRCC1 Arg399Gln) with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. These non-synonymous polymorphisms may alter DNA repair capacity and thus increase or decrease susceptibility. The present study aimed to determine the genotype distribution of XPD codon 751, XRCC1 codon 280 and codon 399 polymorphisms and haplotype associations among NPC cases and controls in the Malaysian population. Materials and Methods: We selected 157 NPC cases and 136 controls from two hospitals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for this study. The polymorphisms studied were genotyped by PCR-RFLP assay and allele and genotype frequenci es, haplotype and linkage disequilibrium were determined using SNPstat software. Results: For the XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism, the frequency of the Lys allele was higher in cases than in controls (94.5% versus 85.0%). For the XRCC1 Arg280His polymorphism, the frequency of Arg allele was 90.0% and 89.0% in cases and controls, respectively and for XRCC1 Arg399Gln the frequency of the Arg allele was 72.0% and 72.8% in cases and controls respectively. All three polymorphisms were in linkage disequilibrium. The odds ratio from haplotype analysis for these three polymorphisms and their association with NPC was 1.93 (95%CI: 0.90-4.16) for haplotype CGC vs AGC allele combinations. The global haplotypte association with NPC gave a p-value of 0.054. Conclusions: Our study provides an estimate of allele and genotype frequencies of XRCC1Arg280His, XRCC1 Arg399Gln and XPD Lys751Gln polymorphisms in the Malaysian population and showed no association with nasopharyngeal cancer.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer: a Single Centre Analysis

  • Background: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is an aggressive form of locally advanced breast cancer characterized by rapidly progressive breast erythema, pain and tenderness, oedema and paeu d'orange appearance. It accounts for 1-3% of all newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer in the west. Data on IBC from India are lacking. The aim of our study was to assess the clinical-pathological parameters and outcome of IBC at, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, a large tertiary care centre. Materials and Methods: We screened 3,650 breast cancer cases registered from January 2004 to December 2012 and found 41 cases of IBC. Data included demographics as well as clinical, radiological and histopathological characteristics, and were collected from clinical case records using the International Classification of Diseases code (C-50). Patients who presented with IBC as a recurrence, or who had a neglected and advanced breast cancer that simulated an IBC were excluded from this study. Results: The median age was 45 years (range 23-66). The median duration of symptoms was 5 months. The American Joint Committee on Cancer stage (AJCC) distribution was Stage III - 26 and IV - 15 patients. Estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) positivity and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2/neu) positivity were 50%, 46% and 60%, respectively. Triple negativity was found in 15% of the cases. All the non metastatic IBC patients received anthracycline and/ or taxane based chemotherapy followed by modified radical mastectomy, radiotherapy and hormonal therapy as indicated. Pathological complete remission rate was 15%. At a median follow-up of 30 months, the 3 year relapse free survival and overall survival were 30% and 40%respectively. Conclusion: IBC constituted 1.1% of all breast cancer patients at our centre. One third of these had metastatic disease at presentation. Hormone positivity and Her2 neu positivity were found in 50% and 60% of the cases, respectively.
