  • Nitrate and chloride are the most common contaminants in groundwater and their concentrations increase easily due to fertilizer consumption and urbanization. The number of time series data for groundwater quality at a single site was not sufficient to analyze trends on Jeju Island. Therefore rectangle grids were drawn for the whole island and single grid was determined to be $500m{\times}500m$ after considering similar stream density, homogeneous hydraulic coefficients, geologic features of volcanic rock and low topographic slopes. All data within each lattice were collected and arranged in time series order and analyzed using Sen's method. 10.6 % of the total lattices for chloride and 22.4% for nitrate showed upward trends from the early 1990's to the early 2000's. Especially, upward trends for nitrate concentration are distinct in the low mid-mountainous areas of western and southern watersheds. Many septic tanks and much domestic waste from the urbanization of the low mid-mountainous area have produced this upward trend. Additionally, the agricultural region has dramatically increased since the 1990's and this has led to an increase of fertilizer consumption and, as a result, nitrate concentration. Therefore, the target of any management plan for groundwater quality on Jeiu Island needs to be focused on careful land use decisions in the mid-mountainous areas which are near Halla Mountain.

  • The study performed a regional flood frequency analysis and proposed a regression equation to estimate design floods corresponding to return periods for ungauged basins in Geum-river basin. Five preliminary tests were employed to investigate hydrological independence and homogeneity of streamflow data, i.e. the lag-one autocorrelation test, time homogeneity test, Grubbs-Beck outlier test, discordancy measure test ($D_i$), and regional homogeneity measure (H). The test results showed that streamflow data were time-independent, discordant and homogeneous within the basin. Using five probability distributions (generalized extreme value (GEV), three-parameter log-normal (LN-III), Pearson type 3 (P-III), generalized logistic (GLO), generalized Pareto (GPA)), comparative regional flood frequency analyses were carried out for the region. Based on the L-moment ratio diagram, average weighted distance (AWD) and goodness-of-fit statistics ($Z^{DIST}$), the GLO distribution was selected as the best fit model for Geum-river basin. Using the GLO, a regression equation was developed for estimating regional design floods, and validated by comparing the estimated and observed streamflows at the Ganggyeong station.

  • In order to investigate absolute age of marine sediment in the KR5 region, northeastern Pacific, we measured the Be isotope ($^{10}Be$ and $^{9}Be$) of box core (BC08-02-13) sediment with depth. Core sediment is divided into three sedimentary facies (Facies I, Facies II, FaciesIII). Facies I mainly consists of brown to dark brown (10YR4/3) homogeneous mud with high water content. Facies II shows brownish yellow (10YR6/6) color. The unconformity is recognized at the boundary between Facies I and Facies II, Facies III consists of very dark brown (10YR2/2) mud. Many bioturbated burrows are observed at FaciesII and FaciesIII. Based on Be dating results, FaciesIII and Facies II had been deposited before 3.7 Ma and 2.3 Ma, respectively. After 2.3 Ma, the upper part of Facies II was eroded due to the change of sedimenary environment. Facies I has been deposited since 1.8 Ma. The unconformity located at the boundary between Facies I and Facies II may be driven by the envrionmental change due to the migration of Intertropical Convergence Zone.

  • Emulsions were prepared with the inversion emulsification method which adopted the agent-in-oil method-dissolving the mixed surfactants composed of the glycerin monostearate, polyoxyethylene(100) monostearate, and polyoxyethylene(20) sorbitan monostearate into mixtures of liquid paraffin and beeswax, and adding the aqueous solution of propylene glycol, gradually-and then their phases and viscosities behaviors in the emulsifying process were investigated. The fine and homogeneous o/w emulsions were formed in the HLB region (HLB 10.1~12.3), showing liquid crystalline phase and white gel phase in the emulsifying process. The phase inversion steps in the emulsifying process appeared as follows, i.e., oil continuous phase${\rightarrow}$liquid crystalline phase${\rightarrow}$white gel phase${\rightarrow}$o/w emulsion. Shear rate-shear stress curves of the prepared emulsions had the yield values which pointed out the existence of inner structure between emulsion particles, and the hysteresis loop which showed that the inner structure wasbroken irreversibly by the shear. The area of hystersis loop, an index of breakdown of inner structure, was increased with the decreasing of the HLB value of emulsifier, Shear time-shear stress curves showed the time dependence of plastic viscosity, and the relaxation time in time thinning behavior(${\lambda}$) indicated that the stability of emulsions prepared with the inversion emulsification method was decreased with the increasing of HLB values of emulsifier and was higher than that of emulsions prepared by homomixer.

  • The dispersion stability of nano $Y_2O_3-CeO_2$ system was investigated using colloid surface chemistry. Green body of $Y_2O_3$ doped $CeO_2$ was prepared by slip casting in and aqueous system. The dispersion stability of suspension between powders and organic additive was accomplished through electrokinetic behavior of suspension, which was done by ESA apparatus. The dynamic mobility of particles was enhanced when the anionic dispersant of the amount of 1wt% was added. The dissolution of $Y^{3+}$ ion in suspension occurred in the acidic region so that pH value in slurries did not move to below 7.0. In the $CeO_2-Y_2O_3$ system, optimal preparation of suspension was made after adding the anionic dispersant as the amount of 1wt% and pH value of 11.0, and then slip-cast and sintered at 1400$^{\circ}$C, 2 hrs. It appeared relative density of >98% and homogeneous distribution of Y element in depth direction as well as in the microstructure of surface.

  • The SAR patterns of biological objects contacted with coaxial waveguide antennal has been investigated, in which the biological object was modeled by a homogeneous and four-layered lossy human body. We derived the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) algorithm and equation of MUR and generalized perfectly matched layer(GPML) ABCs in cylindrical coordination. The coupling between coaxial waveguide antenna and a biological object was analyzed by use of MUR and GPML ABCs in the FDTD method to obtain the absorbed power patterns in the media. The specific absorption rates (SAR) distribution which was corresponding to the temperature distribution was calculated in each region by use of the steady-state response in the FDTD method. The SAR patterns of the FDTD method using MUR absorbing boundary conditions(ABCs) was compared with those of the FDTD method using GPML ABCs. The comparison exhibits that the penetration depth of the SAR patterns using MUR ABCs is deeper than that of the SAR patterns using GPML ABCs because of loss in free space. However, the spread in the lateral directions of the SAR patterns using GPML ABCs is smaller than of the SAR patterns using MUR ABCs.

  • The integrity assessment of the bridge behavior is generalized by field data of a static load-deformation curve and dynamic properties such as impact factors and natural frequencies. Evaluating it with numerical analysis is a reasonable method. The results of the mockup test and the numerical analysis are corresponded with each other since the behavior of service load proceeds in elastic region. In case of the dynamic behavior of structure, especially for the analysis of vibration, the result of the mockup test differs from the result of numerical analysis a little due to the geometric shape and non-homogeneous materials. In order to converge on these tolerances, this study suggested several numerical models, analyzed the sensitivity and finally offered a practical modeling method for the estimation of bridge on the basis of the result of mockup test. Based on the model substituted concrete section for strands section, the natural frequency of the model composed with axial stiffness of strands or the model applied the modified modulus of elasticity was closest with the result of the mockup test.

  • This study analyzed the influence relations of the subjectivity of satisfaction with curriculum in food cooking area based on NCS by applying Q methodology, targeting graduates of hotel cooking department in college. This paper largely suggests two research questions like following. Research Question 1: What are the acceptance types of satisfaction with curriculum in food cooking area based on NCS? Research Question 2: What are the homogeneous characteristics and implications of each type? In the results of typological analysis based on such research questions, total four types were drawn like following: Type1(N=7): Basic Practical Classes Pursuit-type, Type2(N=5): Domestic Employment Preference-type, Type3(N=5): Famous Chef Inviting Class Pursuit-type, and Type4(N=3): Tailor-Made Lessons Pursuit-type. Each type showed its own distinctive characteristics. In this study, the graduates' perception in a specific cooking department would be used as a basis for follow-up researches. In the future, it would be necessary to have researches to establish the customized-curriculum system such as planning/operating student-centered teaching/learning guidelines and also conducting mentoring programs. Also, it is expected to have continuous follow-up researches to complement the limitations of this study.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method for determining automatically the size of the matching window using histogram of the gradient in order to improve the performance of stereo matching using one-meter resolution satellite imagery. For each pixel, we generate Flatness Index Image by calculating the mean value of the vertical or horizontal intensity gradients of the 4-neighbors of every pixel in the entire image. The edge pixel has high flatness index value, while the non-edge pixel has low flatness index value. By using the histogram of the Flatness Index Image, we find a flatness threshold value to determine whether a pixel is edge pixel or non-edge pixel. If a pixel has higher flatness index value than the flatness threshold value, we classify the pixel into edge pixel, otherwise we classify the pixel into non-edge pixel. If the ratio of the number of non-edge pixels in initial matching window is low, then we consider the pixel to be in homogeneous region and enlarge the size of the matching window We repeat this process until the size of matching window reaches to a maximum size. In the experiment, we used IKONOS satellite stereo imagery and obtained more improved matching results than the matching method using fixed matching window size.

  • Optical characteristics of the yellow sand and their influences on the ocean color remote sensing has been studied using ocean color sensor SeaWiFS measurements. Two cases of April 18 and April 25, 1998, representing yellow sand and background aerosol, are selected for emphasizing the impact of high aerosol concentration on the ocean color remote sensing. It was shown that NASA's standard atmospheric correction algorithm treats yellow sand area as either too high radiance or cloud area, in which ocean color information is not generated. Optical thickness of yellow sand arrived over the East Asian sea waters in April 18 indicates that there are two groups loaded with relatively homogeneous yellow sand, i.e.: heavy yellow sand area with optical thickness peak around 0.8 and mild area with about 0.4, which are consistent with ground observations. The movement of the yellow sand area obtained from surface weather maps and backward trajectory analysis manifest the notion that the weak yellow sand area was originated from the outer region of the dust storm. It is also noted that high optical thickness associated with the yellow sand is significantly different from what we may observe from background aerosol, which is about 0.2. These characteristics allow us to determine the yellow sand area with an aid of atmospheric correction parameter. Results indicate that the yellow sand area can be determined by applying the features revealed in scattergrams of atmospheric correction parameter and optical thickness.
