  • In this study, mesoporous hollow silica spheres were synthesized using a polystyrene core and cetyltriammonium chloride (CTACl) as a pore template, and a low-cost water glass instead of expensive tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor. In addition, the material was synthesized by varying the concentration of polystyrene. Later, the polystyrene core and CTACl were removed by firing in a high-temperature heat-treatment process. The synthesized product was analyzed by various methods, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and N2-sorption analysis. It was confirmed that the hollow silica sphere had a hexagonal structure with a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific area of 1623 ㎡/g.

  • Modern concrete high safety, constructability and economy due to advantages such as buildings used for more than about 70%, but due to the low thermal performance is essential, such as installation of additional insulation is required, and therefore increase the cost of construction, as well as the construction period and condensation Symptoms such as a domestic environment, such as to inhibit the problem by generating such an improvement has been desired. In this study, we want to present the base line data for the development of improved insulation performance concrete with analyzing and evaluating the Durable Properties of the concrete combination of hollow glass microsphere and lightweight aggregate.

  • In this research, as a measure of reducing energy lost through external wall, we used Glass Hollow Micro Sphere (HMS) to improve insulation performance to structural concrete. The following is a result of experimenting concrete using HMS. As usage of HMS, decrease in slump arose and it is judged as a need of using superplasticizer. Replacement ratio increasing more and more, amount of air showed tendency to decrease and compressive strength decreased for interfacial adhesion had not been formed. as replacement ratio and unit volume decreased. It appears that thermal conductivity decreased about 30.0~46.5 percent as compared with normal weight concrete.

  • This study is for evaluating the fire resistance performance (1~2 h) of the RC Structure void slab using the Lightweight Hollow Sphere, which can reduce the unnecessary dynamic part of removing the central concrete. For this experiment, we set up depth of concrete cover, live load, and span length as the factors. The result comes out with all the slabs under those conditions can ensure the goal fire resistance performance (120 min). And among these factors, the resisting capability changes more sensitively with the live load rather than the thickness of cover. And the shorter span length could assure the better the fire resistance performance. The result observing the character in high temperature of the Lightweight Hollow Sphere which does not used as existing RC structure slab, a delay section in temperature change is occurred due to the Glass Transition in $100^{\circ}C$. And heat transfer by conduction does not occur at lightweight hollow sphere because the polystyrene in EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) melts point in $185^{\circ}C$. Therefore temperature at lightweight hollow sphere is lower than the concrete and rebar.

  • In this study, the composite coating materials with improved thermal insulation property were prepared by incorporating the hollow micro-spheres with high heat transfer resistance. The UV curable resin system consisting of hexa aliphatic urethane acrylate (UP118), trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), and photoinitiator (Irgacure184) was employed as an organic binder. The glass substrates were coated by the prepared composites via bar coating method and cured under UV radiation. The optical transparency, thermal insulation property, adhesion, and surface hardness of the glass coated with composites containing different type of micro-spheres were investigated. The incorporation of micro-spheres with only 20 vol% of content resulted in remarkable improvement in the thermal insulation property of the coated glass. In addition, the transparent coated glass with light transmittance of about 80% could be obtained when silica micro-sphere (SP) was used as a thermal barrier.

  • In this study, hollow silica microspheres (HSM) of various sizes formed according to the concentration of surfactants using water glass as a precursor, which is advantageous for commercialization due to its lower unit cost compared to conventional silicon alkoxide (tetraethyl orthosilicate, TEOS) was synthesized. The physical properties of the silica hollow microspheres according to the concentration of surfactant were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared, contact angle measurement, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda analyzers and field emission scanning electron microscopy. When porous water glass-based hollow silica spheres were prepared by adding a surfactant at an appropriate concentration, it was confirmed that excellent hollow silica spheres were formed with a specific surface area of 169 m2/g, an average particle size of 25.3 ㎛, and a standard deviation of 6.25.

  • Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.

  • By using a liquid-mix precursor, we prepared the hollow glass spheres(HGS) as an additive of polymer compound which are used in the field of modifier, promoter, filler, and reinforcement. Liquid-mix precursor is a mixture of 40% sodium silicate aqueous solution, boric acid as a insolubilizing agent, and urea as a blowing agent. To obtain the precursor particles which are fed into a gas flame furnae, the above liquid-mix precursor was dried in oven and crushed with ball mill. We assumed the size of precursor particles ($53{\sim}63{\mu}m$, $63{\sim}180{\mu}m$), temperature of furnace($800{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$), and amount of urea(0~30 g) as the parameters affecting on the properties of HGS. As a result mean particle size of HGS increases with increasing the temperature of furnace and the amount of urea and with decreasing the size of precursor particles. Also, we found that incresing the amount of urea is related to a decrease of the crush strength of HGS.

  • Carbon spheres (CS) were fabricated using glucose as a precursor in the hydrothermal method. Hollow TiO2 (H-TiO2) spheres with 200 nm, 500 nm, and 1,200 nm were synthesized by CS/TiO2 core-shell particles via a sol-gel and calcination method. H-TiO2 spheres with nano and micron sizes were characterized using FE-SEM, HR-TEM, and X-ray diffraction. The CIE color coordinate, solar reflectance, and heat shield temperatures of H-TiO2/polyacrylate (PA) composite film were investigated using a UV-Vis-NIR spectrometer and homemade heat insulation temperature measuring device. H-TiO2/PA composites exhibit excellent thermal insulation since the hollow structure filled with dry air has low thermal conductivity and near infrared light reflecting performance. The thermal insulation increased with increasing the hollow sphere (HS) size on H-TiO2/PA composites. The PA composite film mixed with H-TiO2 filled with 1200 nm HS reduced the heat shield temperature by 26 ℃ compared to that of the transparent glass counterpart.
