  • The author was used for the ICR mouse and induced diabetes with the streptozotocin(50mg/kg)and alloxan(40mg/kg). After the testing and the identifying the diabetes, the histological changes of the glomerulus, blood test for the values of blood sugar, and urine test for the values of urine protein were investigated. The results are as follows : 1. The values of high blood sugar appeared from the 2 group were about $378mg/d{\ell}{\sim}709mg/d{\ell}$, in the treated groups with the streptozotocin and alloxan. The glycosuria were obviously continued from the 2 weeks to the 12 weeks of the streptozotocin and the alloxan treated groups and the proteinuria was ${\pm}{\sim}+$ in the 4 weeks and 8 weeks of streptozotocin treated group and were + in all the 12 weeks. The ketonuria were generally negative. 2. In the view of the light microscope, there was no significant histological changes until the 8 weeks. However, in the 12 weeks group treated with the streptozotocin, the mesangial matrix of glomerulus increased Bowman's capsules adhered to each other and changed them to the crescence shapes because of increasing the exothelial cells.

  • For the spatiotemporally aligned observation of photothrombosis induction and transient variations of in vivo brain stroke, we developed a novel photothrombosis inducing system compatible to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system using nonmagnetic stereotaxic equipment. From the spatial point of view, the system provides a more reliable level of reproducibility of the photothrombosis in each brain. From the temporal point of view, from T1- and T2-weighted in vivo MR (magnetic resonance) images, the transient variations such as incidence, location, and size of the thrombosis are measured quantitatively. In addition, the final variation is observed in the ex vivo brain by TTC (Triphenyltetrazolium chloride) staining based on histological assay and utilized for the verification of the MR images. From the experimental result of the rat brain, the proposed system shows more reliable characteristics for transient variations of brain strokes.

  • Introduction: Research on dental bone graft material has been actively conducted. Recently, demineralized dentin matrix material has been developed and introduced. This study examined the effect of demineralized dentin matrix material on bone healing. Subjects and Methods: The patients who received no treatment after extraction were used as the control group and patients who underwent demineralized dentin matrix material application in the extraction socket after extraction were used as the experimental group. Panorama radiography was performed at the baseline and at 3.5 months after graft material placement and CT was taken at 3.5 months after graft material placement for a radiologic evaluation. Bony tissue specimens were collected from the alveolar crest in the middle of the extraction socket using a 2 mm trephine bur after 3.5 months for the histology and hostomorphometric study. Results: 1. On the panoramic view, a higher bone density was observed in the subject group. 2. On the panoramic view, the bone density increased significantly in the extraction socket, from the baseline to 3.5 months: a 7 and 10 gray-level scale was observed in the control and experimental group, respectively (P<0.05). 3. The CT view evaluation at 3.5 months revealed significantly higher bone density in the subject group than the control group (P<0.05). 4. The histological findings showed more active new bone and lamellar bone formation in the subject group. Dentin with osteoinduction ability and enamel with osteoconduction ability appeared. 5. On histomorphometric analysis, the subject group showed significantly more new bone, lamellar bone area and lower soft tissue area (P<0.05). The difference between the groups was significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Bone healing was improved after the application of demineralized dentin matrix material and there was active new bone and lamellar bone formation.

  • This study is to characterize the effects of swimming exercise on the composition of muscle fibers in rats lower limb tissue. By comparing the exercised group (4, 8 weeks) with the control group, we analyzed the difference histologically, histochemically and morphometrically. The obtained results are as follows ; 1. In the histological view, the distance between the individual muscle fibers and the muscle bundles in exercised group was shorter than that of control group. The irregular shape of sarcolemma in exercised group was observed. 2, In the histochemical view(NADH-TR. and Myosin ATPase reaction analysis), the increased populations of red and intermediate fibers were observed, whereas the white fiber was decreased. 3. In the morphometrical view, the red and intermediate fibers of tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius in exercised group were quantitatively increased, compared with control group. However, the white fiber and connective tissue in exercised group were decreased.

  • The rupture of blood vessels in the human brain results in serious pathological and medical problems. In particular, brain hemorrhage and hematomas resulting from impact to the head are a major cause of death. As such, investigating the tensile behavior and rupture of blood vessels in the brain is very important from a medical point of view. In the present study, the tensile characteristics of the blood vessels in the human brain were analyzed using a quasi-static uniaxial tensile test, and the properties of the arteries and veins compared. In addition, to compare the tensile behavior and demonstrate the validity of the experimental results, blood vessels from the legs of pigs were also tested and analyzed. The overall results were in accordance with the histological structures and previous medical reports.

  • Experiments were carried out to evaluate the pharmacognostical aspects of Polygoni Radix which consists of the roots of Polygonum multiflorum $T_{HUNBERG}$(Polygonaceae), Cynanchum wilfordii $H_{EMSLEY}$ (Asclepiadaceae) and Polygonum ciliinerve $(N_{AKAI})O_{WI}$ (Polygonaceae), since it was known to be effective as tonic, nutrient, etc. in oriental medicine. The histological features of the above three plants of Polygoni Radix were compared in view point of external and internal morphologies and their habitats. Also their constituents were compared on the basis of anthraquinone group. From the methanol extract of Polygonum ciliinerve $(N_{AKAI})O_{WI}$, furthermore, a specific product of this country, two anthraquinone derivatives were isolated. One of the substances was identified as emodin $(C_{15}H_{10}O_5,\;m.p.\;268-269^{\circ})$ through comparison of the authentic compound and spectroscopy.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the bone regeneration capability of silk membrane plus 3% 4-hexylresorcinol (3% 4-HR plus SM) in a rabbit calvarial defect model. Twenty New Zealand white rabbits were used in this study. Bilateral round shaped defects were created in the parietal bone (diameter: 8.0 mm). And the defects were covered with (1) 3% 4-HR plus SM, (2) collagen membrane (CM), (3) no graft material. After surgery, the animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Bone regeneration was analyzed in each section by micro-computerized tomography (${\mu}$-CT). And Hematoxylin and eosin stains were used for histological analysis. As measured by ${\mu}$-CT analysis 4 weeks after surgery, the average of new bone formation in animals treated with 3% 4-HR plus SM was greater than that of animals treated with CM. and the difference was statistically significant. And well organized lamella bones were observed in the histological view of the 3% 4-HR plus SM group. Therefore, more bone regeneration was seen in animals treated with 3% 4-HR plus SM than in those treated with CM or uncovered control.

  • Aim: The risk factors mostly strongly associated with gastric cancer are gastric bacteria Helicobacter pylori and diet. Using a case-control study among residents in Jinan, we examined the association between the salt taste and gastric cancer according to H. pylori infection, smoking and histological type as well as tumor site. Methods: This population-based case-control study included 207 cases and 410 controls. Data on potential risk factors of gastric cancer were obtained by interview of cases and controls with a questionnaire, salt taste preference was measured for all subjects, and IgG antibodies to H. pylori were applied to assess infection. Risk measures were determined using unconditional logistic regression. Results: The proportions of salt taste at intervals of 1.8-7.2 g/L and ${\geq}7.2$ g/L were significantly higher in cases than controls, with ORs of 1.56 (1.23-3.64) and 2.03 (2.12-4.11), respectively, subjects with high salt intake having an elevated risk for gastric cancer when infected with H. pylori. Significant modification by smoking and tumor site was observed across the different measures of salt intake, the highest salt taste showed higher cancer risk in ever smokers or with non-cardia cancers. Conclusion: Our study supports the view that high intake of sodium is an important dietary risk factor for gastric cancer, with a synergistic effect found between salt and H.pylori and smoking, dependent on the tumor site.
