PFOS에 만성노출된 곳체다슬기, Semisulcospira gottschei의 생존, 운동성, 성장 및 기관계 구조 (Effect of Chronic Exposure of PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate) on Survival, Activity, Growth, and Organ Structure of the Melania Snail, Semisulcospira gottschei (Gastropoda: Pleuroceridae))

  • The present study was conducted to find out effect of PFOS on survival, activity, growth and organ structure of the melania snail, Semisulcospira gottschei. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and four PFOS exposure condition (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L). After 16 week exposure, survival rate and activity were not significantly influenced at the two lower exposure groups, 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L, but they were significantly reduced in 1.0 and 5.0 mg/L groups. Total weight and meat weight rate (MWR) were reduced in PFOS exposure group in comparison to control group. Also, histological degenerations such as acidification of mucous, necrosis and split of muscular fiber bundle, atrophy of anterior pedal gland were recognized in the foot. Hepatopancreas showed the atrophy and degeneration of the digestive cell, vacuolation of digestive gland and closure of lumen in digestive gland.

옥돔의 동결에 관한 연구 2. 동결에 의한 옥돔조직의 변화 (STUDIES ON THE FREEZING OF YELLOW SEA BREAM)

  • 옥돔을 6개월간 두가지 다른 온도로 동결저장하면서 동결온도의 차이, 동결저장기간의 차이에 따른 조직의 변화를 광학현미경으로 관찰한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 동결저장온도의 차이에서 오는 근육조직 변화는 많았으며, $-5^{\circ}C로 저장한 것이 $-35^{\circ}C$로 저장 한 것 보다 그 변호가 많았다. 2. 조직변화에서본 선어로서 옥돔의 동결저장기간은 $-5^{\circ}C$의 경우는 길어서 1개월, $-35^{\circ}C$의 경우는 3개월 정도였다. 3. 3. $-5^{\circ}C$ 동결은 $-35^{\circ}C$ 동결에 비하여 세포외 세포외 동결이 많았었다. 4 동결에 대한 옥돔의 근조직의 피해는 비교적 심한편 이었다. 본 연구느 문교부 연구조성비로서 이루어 졌음.

Structure and Function of the Reproductive System of Aplysia kurodai

  • This study investigated structure and function of the reproductive system in Aplysia kurodai by means of anatomical, histological, and histochemical observation. Reproductive system of this species is consisted of ovotestis, small hermaphroditic duct, ampulla, accessory genital mass and large hermaphroditic duct. The ovotestis is composed of a large number of follicles, and both oocytes and spermatocytes matured in the same follicle. The small hermaphroditic duct is a single tube and contains a swelling, the ampulla, which functions as a storage organ for endogenous sperm and an oviduct. The accessory genital mass is connected to both the small and large hermaphroditic duct, and consisted of three glands: albumen, membrane (winding) and mucus gland. The albumen gland is consisted of granular cells producing basophilic and neutral mucopolysaccharides. The membrane and mucus gland are consisted of granular cells producing acidophilc and sulfated mucopolysaccharides. The large hermaphroditic duct is a single tubular gonoduct linking the accessory genital mass to the common genital aperture but is consisted of two parallel compartments. Internally, these two compartments are incompletely divided by internal septum or fold, which are called as the red hemiduct and white hemiduct, respectively. The red hemiduct functions as an oviduct and the white hemiduct functions as a copulatory duct. The reproductive system of A. kurodai is externally comprised a single tube, i.e., monaulic type. However, internal structure of duct is incompletely divided into oviduct and copulatory duct, i.e., the oodiaulic type.

한국산 남방짱뚱어 Scartelaos gigas의 후각기관 구조에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Structure of Peripheral Olfactory Organ in the Korean Mudskipper, Scartelaos gigas (Pisces, Gobiidae))

  • 수중과 육상의 이중적인 생활을 하는 남방짱뚱어 Scartelaos gigas (amphibious mudskipper)의 후각기관을 해부학과 조직학적으로 연구하였다. 그 결과 후각기관은 좌우 한 쌍이 존재하며 각 기관은 한 개의 가느다란 긴관 (an elongated canal)과 사비강과 누비강의 두 개의 비강 (ethmoidal and lacrimal nasal sacs)으로 구성되어 있었다. 각 관의 내벽에 발달한 감각 상피는 3~4개의 섬모를 가지는 감각 수용기 세포 (receptor cell), 지지세포 (supporting cell), 기저세포 (basal cell) 그리고 점액세포 (mucus cell)들로 구성되는 다세포성 구조로 이루어져 있었다. 반면에 비감각 상피는 감각기를 갖지 않는 주름진 표면만을 가지고 있었다. 또한 두 개의 비강은 상피 표면에 점액 방울 (mucin droplet)을 가지고 있었다. 따라서 남방짱뚱어의 이러한 후각기관의 특징은 생태적 습성과 서식처에 관련된 반수중 생활 (semi-aquatic life)에 적응한 특징으로 사료된다.

Gene Expression Analysis of Lung Injury in Rats Induced by Exposure to MMA-SS Welding Fume for 30 Days

  • The welding fume has been implicated as a causal agent in respiratory disease such as pneumoconiosis. The molecular mechanism by which welding fume induces toxicity in the lung is still unknown, but studies have focused on histological structure and indirect approach measuring the pulmonary damage markers. In the present study, gene expression profiles were analyzed in the lung of rats exposed by manual metal-arc stainless-steel (MMA-SS) welding fume for 30 days using Affymetrix GeneChip$^{(R)}$. Totally, 379 genes were identified as being either up- or down-regulated over 2-fold changes (P<0.01) in the lung of low- or high-dose group and were analyzed by using hierarchical clustering. We focused on genes involved in immune/inflammation responses were differentially regulated during lung injury induced by welding fume exposure. The information of these deregulated genes may contribute in elucidation of the inflammation mechanism during lung injury such as lung fibrosis.

Effects of Photoperiod Treatment on Histological Changes in Testis Tissues of the Golden Hamster

  • Many mammals in temperate zones are affected by the distinctive changes of the four seasons in these zones. Their reproductive status is active in the summer climate and inactive during severe winter weather. The golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) is seasonal breeding animal whose sexual activities are regulated by photoperoidism. The reproduction and metabolism are activated by long summer days (LD) and inhibited by short winter days (SD). After several months of SD, animals become refractory to this inhibitory photoperiod and spontaneously revert to LD-like physiology. The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) house the primary circadian oscillator in mammals. Seasonal changes in the photic input to this structure control many annual physiological rhythms via SCN-regulated pineal melatonin secretion, which provides an internal endocrine signal representing photoperiod. The aim of this study was to assess the variation in the morphology of the testis in relation to the natural photoperiod in male golden hamsters. The hamsters were castrated at different weeks (2, 5, 8, and 15). The cell numbers of tubules with spermatogonia (SG), spermatocyte (SC), spermatids (ST), and spermatozoa (SZ) were recorded in each sample. The results showed that testicular regression of golden hamsters occurred in the SD-treated animals. The present investigation determines that the effects of the photoperiod on the reproduction of male golden hamsters. It was also found that the circadian period increases the rate of reproductive inhibition in animals exposed to inhibitory photoperiods.

털진드기 흡혈에 의한 등줄쥐 피부의 흡입관 형성 관찰 (Observation of Stylostome Formation in the Striped-field Mouse (Apodemus agrarius Pallas) Skin by Chigger Feeding)

  • The chigger is of importance to humans and animals as an irritating pest and a crucial vector of disease. We observed stylostome formation by larvae of Leptotrombidium pallidum in parasitized striped-field mouse (Apodemus agarius) pinna skin. The stylostome formations were also examined in detail by electron microscopy. The proximal and middle parts of the stylostome were formed as a rod-like structure containing a canal. The stylostome was coated with thick degenerated epidermal cells, and seemed to be formed a hyperplastic epidermis. The stylostome formation may result from an interaction between larval secretions and the host tissue. According to histological and morphological characteristics, the stylostome exhibited considerable inflammation in the epidermis and similar reactivity.

ML분류를 사용한 유방암 항체 조직 영상분할 (Segmentation of Immunohistochemical Breast Carcinoma Images Using ML Classification)

  • 본 연구에서는 RGB칼라영상에서 세 칼라 객체의 색상에 따라 정량적으로 분류하기 위하여 ML(Maximum Likelihood) 분류법 을 개선 시도하여 보았다. RGB 칼라 영상이라 하면 빨강, 초록, 파랑의 세 밴드로 이루어진다. 스펙트룸과 공간상의 요소를 고려한다면 3차원적인 구조를 갖게 된다. 이러한 3차원 구조의 voxel를 RGB cube에 투사하여 이로부터 ML분류법의 개선 방법론을 적용하여 보았다. 전례적으로 쉽게 사용되어지는 Box 분류법과 비교 검토하여 보았으며 Bayesian decision 이론을 기반으로한 통계학적인 ML 분류법을 사용하였다. 유방암 항체조직영상에 이 방법론을 응용하며 양성 세포핵 음성 세포핵 그리고 배경을 분류하는데 좋은 결과를 얻어 임상에서 유방암 환자의 예후 및 진단에 사용할 수 있도록 연구하였다.

A Ganglion Cyst in the Second Lumbar Intervertebral Foramen

  • Ganglion cysts usually arise from the tendon sheaths and tissues around the joints. It is usually associated with degenerative arthritic changes in older people. Ganglion cyst in the spine is rare and there is no previous report on case that located in the intervertebral foramen and compressed dorsal root ganglion associated severe radiculopathy. A 29-year-old woman presented with severe left thigh pain and dysesthesia for a month. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a dumbbell like mass in the intervertebral foramen between second and third lumbar vertebrae on the left side. The lesion was removed after exposure of the L2-L3 intervertebral foramen. The histological examination showed fragmented cystic wall-like structure composed of fibromyxoid tissue but there was no lining epithelium. A ganglion cyst may compromise lumbar dorsal root ganglion when it located in the intervertebral foramen. Although it is very rare location, ganglion cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis for intervertebral foraminal mass lesions.

Sex Differentiation and Early Gonadogenesis in Sebastes inermis Cuvier

  • Early gonadal development and sexual differentiation of dark-banded rockfish (Sebastes inermis Cuvier) were followed from parturition to 400 days post parturition (dpp). During this period, average total length (TL) increased from 0.57 to 13.18 cm. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) were first detected at 0.68 cm TL (10 dpp). When fish reached 1.52 cm TL (50 dpp), initial stages of ovarian differentiation were identified by the presence of PGCs containing condensed chromatin and their transformation into meiotic oocytes. At 10.23 cm TL (300 dpp), the ovaries gradually developed into oocytes in the primary yolk stages. Ovary growth was rapid after sex differentiation, but testis tissue continued to multiply without growing until fish reached 6.97 cm TL (200 dpp), after which the production of spermatocytes, spermatogonia, and cyst cells was apparent. Histological analysis of gonadal structure suggested a gonochoristic sexual development pathway. Our analysis of the sex ratio at 400 dpp showed a significantly higher proportion of males.
