Seasonal Variation and Preservation Potential of Tidal-Flat Sediments on the Tidal Flat of Gomso Bay, West Coast of Korea

  • Seasonal changes of topograpy, sediment grain size and accumulation rate on the Gomso-Bay tidal flat(Fig. 1), west coast of Korea, have studied in order to understand the seasonal accumulation pattern and preservation potential of tidal-flat sediments. Seasonal levelings across the tidal flat show that the landward movement of both intertidal sand shoals and cheiers accelerates during the winter and typhoon period, but it almost stops in summer when mud deposition is instead predominant on the middle to upper tidal flat. Seasonal variations of mean grain size were largest on the upper part of middle tidal flat where summer mud layers were eroded during the winter and typhoon periods(Fig. 2). Measurements of accululation depths from sea floor to basal plate reveal that accumulation rates were seasonally controlled according to the elevation of tidal-flat surface(Table 1) : the upper flat, where the accumulation rate of summer was generally higher than that of winter, was characterized by a continuous deposition throughout the entire year, whereas on the middle flat, sediment accumulations were concentrated in winter realtive to summer, and were intermittently eroded by typhoons. The lower tidal flat were deposited mostly in winter and eroded during summer typhoons. Cancores taken across the tidal flat reveal that sand-mud interlaers resulting from such seasonal changes of energy regime are preserved only in the upper part of the deposits and generally replaced by storm layers downcore(Fig. 3). Based on above results, it is suggested that the storm deposits formed by winter stors and typhoons would consist of the major part of the Gomso-Bay deposits(Fig. 4).

Experimental study to enhance cooling effects on total-coverage combustor wall (연소기 내벽의 전면 막냉각 사용시 효율 증대에 관한 연구)

  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer for flow through perforated plates for application to combustor wall and turbine blade film cooling. The experiments are conducted for hole length to diameter ratios of 0.68 to 1.5, for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.5 and 3.0, for gap distance between two parallel perforated plates of 1 to 3 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 60 to 13, 700. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients near and inside the cooling holes are obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. Detailed knowledge of the local transfer coefficients is essential to analyze thermal stress in turbine components. The results indicate that the heat/mass transfer coefficients inside the hole surface vary significantly due to flow separation and reattachment. The transfer coefficient near the reattachment point is about four and half times that for a fully developed circular tube flow. The heat/mass transfer coefficient on the leeward surface has the same order as that on the windward surface because of a strong recirculation flow between neighboring jets from the array of holes. For flow through two perforated plate layers, the transfer coefficients on the target surface (windward surface of the second wall) affected by the gap spacing are approximately three to four times higher than that with a single layer.

  • Recently, In recognition of outstanding structural performance the use of Concrete Filled steel Tube(CFT) columns has been increased. Research is ongoing that effective use of cross-sectional because steel strength development and rising prices. In this Lab, suggests new shape by Thin steel plates bent to be L-channel welded to form square steel tube to maximize efficiency of the cross section. In addition, since the rib placed at the center of the tube width acts as an anchor; higher load capacity of buckling is acceptable. we have developed New shape welded built-up square tube for broader usability which were bent to be L-shaped and thin Plate each unit member were welded. In order to apply the new shape built-up square columns, we predicted structure behavior, stress distribution with parameter Width thickness ratio. The experimental results presented in standards and even exceed the b/t of the rib anchors installed in the role due to exert enough strength and deformation to improve performance was favorable.

Detection of MecA Gene in Clinical Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus by Multiplex-PCR, and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of MRSA

  • Multiplex-PCR protocols were designed in order to make a rapid identification of MRSA. MecA, femB, and 165 rRNA genes were amplified for making a detection of MRSA. The incidence of MRSA in the clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus was examined by using a multiplex-PCR assay. The mecA gene was detected in 266 strains out of 336 clinical isolates of S. aureus, thus the incidence of MRSA was approximately 76.5%. The MRSAs of 247 strains (96.1%) showed resistance to more than eight species of the antimicrobial agents tested. The isolates of MRSA showed 27 different antimicrobial-resistant patterns. The results indicate that many different MRSA strains having high multidrug resistance are actually prevalent in Korea. Also, VISA was screened from the MRSA. Two strains were grown on the BHI agar plate supplemented with $8\;\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ of vancomycin at a frequency of $1/10^8$ colony forming units or higher.

[ $CO_2$ ] Laser Weldability and Formability of High Strength Steels for Tailored Blanks Applications (TWB용 고강도 박판 강재의 $CO_2$ 레이저 용접성 및 성형성)

  • The laser welding and its analysis were carried out using high power 6kW $CO_2$ laser for high strength steels such as DP, TRIP and conventional high strength steels. Bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of weld variables of laser welding, and to obtain optimum welding condition. In order to investigate the formability of welded high strength steels, LDH test was added on this work. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Meanwhile, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of extremely higher heat input. The optimum welding condition of welding was derived from bead width, penetration and hardness property. It was shown that the DP steels had lower porosity level and smooth bead shape, therefore better laser weldability than TRIP steels and conventional high strength steels. In addition, LDH test shows that the welded DP steels have about $90\%$ formability value of base metal, although TRIP steel and conventional high strength steels have about $80\%$ formability value of its base metal.

Reflectivity characteristics of Ag nano-crystals grown by electroless plating (무전해 도금에 의해 성장되어진 은 나노결정의 반사율 특성)

  • In this study, the reflectivity characteristics of Ag nano-coating grown by electroless plating were investigated in order to use as the reflecting plate of BLU (Back Light Unit) in the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or LED (Light Emitting Diode) display equipment. The microstructure of Ag nano-coating was polycrystalline nano-structure that consisted of Ag nano-crystals to be reduced and precipitated, and the size of reduced nano-crystals increased as the thickness of nano-coating increased. The reflectivity of Ag nano-coating in the visible light decreased as the thickness of nano-coating increased and the reduction of reflectivity was more severe in the short wavelength region of visible light. The decrease of reflectivity was closely related to the size of Ag nano-crystal and was thought to be due to the larger surface roughness of larger nano-coating thickness. Therefore, the finer Ag nano-crystals and thinner nano-coating thickness could be favorable for the higher reflectivity of Ag nano-coating grown by electroless plating.

A Study of the Advanced Composite Material Slab for Light Weight of Tall Building (초고층빌딩 경량화를 위한 복합신소재 슬래브에 관한 연구)

  • For each construction material used, there is certain theoretical limit in sizes. For tall building construction, the reduction in slab weight is the first step to take in order to break such size limits. In this paper, the feasibility of such objective is proven and given by numerical analysis result. For a typical building slab, both concrete and advanced composite sandwich panels are considered. The concrete slab is treated as a special orthotropic plate to obtain more accurate result. For each panel, the deflection under the dead and live loads is compared, since both tensile and compressive strengths of the composites are far more higher than those of concrete. All types of sandwich panels considered, except one case, have self-weights less than one tenth of that of the reinforced concrete slab, with deflections less than that of the reinforced concrete slab.

Application of Miniature Heat Pipe for Notebook PC Cooling (노트북 PC CPU 냉각용 소형 히트파이프 Packaging 연구)

  • Miniature heat pipe(MHP) with woven-wired wick was used to cool the CPU of a notebook PC. The pipe with circular cross-section was pressed and bent for packaging the MHP into a notebook PC with very limited compact packaging space. A cross-sectional area of the pipe is reduced about 30% as the MHP with 4mm diameter is pressed to 2mm thickness. In the present study a performance test has been performed in order to review varying of operating performance according to pressed thickness variation and heat dissipation capacity of MHP cooling module that is packaged on a notebook PC. New wick type was considered for overcoming low heat transfer limit when MHP is pressed to thin-plate. The limiting thickness or pressing is shown to be within the range of 2mm∼2.5mm through the performance test with varying the pressing thickness. When the wall thickness of 0.4mm is reduced to 0.25mm for minimizing conductive thermal resistance through the wall of heat pipe, heat transfer limit and thermal resistance of MHP were improved about 10%. In the meantime, it is shown that the thermal resistance and heat transfer limit for the MHP with central wick type are higher than those of MHP with existing wick types. The results of performance test for MHP cooling modules with woven-wired wick to cool a notebook PC shows the stability as cooling system since T(sub)j(Temperature of Processor Junction) satisfy a demand condition of 0∼100$\^{C}$ under 11.5W of CPU heat.

Effect of Different Conveyer Speed of Electron Beam Irradiation on the Oxidative and Microbiological Stability of Ground Pork during Refrigeration (Conveyer 이동 속도를 달리한 전자선 조사가 돈육의 냉장 중 산화와 미생물적 안정성에 미치는 영향)

  • Fresh ground pork was irradiated with the electron beam(3.0 and 5.0 kGy) using 2 different conveyer speeds (10 and 20 ㎐), respectively, in order to determine the effect of conveyer speeds on the development of lipid oxidation and microbial stability. During refrigerated storage, the development of lipid oxidation decreased significantly (p<0.05) with the increase in the electron beam conveyer speed from 10 to 20 ㎐. The ground pork with electron beam inhibited the growth of total aerobic bacteria and mesophiles. The inhibitory effect increased when the electron beam dose increased from 0 to 5.0 kGy. The finding that higher speed(20 ㎐) of electron beam had some antioxidative effect is very promising, however, other means to control the lipid oxidation must also be employed to fully utilize the sterilization effect of electron beam in ground pork.

Isolation and Characterization of a Protease-Producing Bacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens P27 from Meju as a Probiotic Starter for Fermented Meat Products

  • This study was performed to select protease-producing Bacillus sp. as a potential probiotic starter for fermented meat products. In order to isolate protease-producing bacterium from meju, measured the diameter of the clear zone on agar plate (TSA, 1% (w/v) skim milk) and analyzed for intracellular protease activity, then 10 Bacillus-like strains were isolated. Three Bacillus-like strains (P19, P27, and P33) among 10 strains were able to tolerate in acidic condition (TSB, pH 2.5, 2 h incubation). These 3 strains were showed antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogenic bacteria. These vegetative cells of 3 strains were showed a survival rate of 0.04% to 0.08% under the artificial gastric acidic condition (TSB, pH 2.5 with 1% (w/v) pepsin), but spore-forming cells were 56.29% to 84.77%. Vegetative cells of 3 strains were the least bile-resistant, while spore-forming cells of 3 strains showed higher survival rate more than 76% under artificial bile condition (TSB, 0.1% (w/v) oxgall bile). In these strains, P27 strain was finally selected as a good probiotic strain. P27 strain was tentatively identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens by API CHB kit and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The results of this study suggest that B. amyloliquefaciens P27 can be used as a potential probiotic starter for fermented meat product.
